@ Monte

Our shop work mostly on Japanese Made vehicles.

Euro made vehicles are available too. BMW, Audi, Porsche, Mercedes and others have a local presence but these cars are very expensive here.

The best is to contact Snap-on and ask them if they have a dealer near you or if you can order the box direct from them:

Ha ha ha. It's a very small shop. Way out in the kind of leagues you guys are in. Just so you have an idea here is a pic of our lube shop. We just opened last December 2009. The shop was opened because of garagejournal.com influence too. We had minimal mechanical tooling know how before joining this forum sometime late 2008.

We rented the front space too and will soon house an auto detailing operation.

Don`t worry, the only big shops you`ll find at the official car dealers like this "Audi palace". Most other shops here (except the "chain stores") have like 2 or 3 "bays".

What do you think about the new Facom circlip pliers ?

ps: This Facom/Parotech tool box is really cool......

Those circlip pliers have a knipex thing, therefore; I am not interested :spit:

The tool box is ....well..... I think it really represents the concerns of the the French mechanic of the future, the only thing it lacks is a tutorial to help the said mechanic write his name properly and count to twelve.:mad:

I can picture the apprentice mechanic, in the midst of doing an oil change, doing his magic dance to his bumping music under the car. If someone bugs him for the music all he needs is that cordless headphone. Of course, either facebook and twitter would be on the laptop screen.

@maxipouce: I'm pretty familiar with Facom, but what other brands are popular with professional or racing mechanics in France? We only get Facom here, and not much of that.

What do you call "here" sir?

In the order of most seen tools in shops;

facom,
berner or wurth (because they have representatives that come to your place),
sam,
gedore- stahlwille- usag- beta- king tony here and there.
Imports that change their brand every year.

When I was a rally mechanic for the school's team (peugeot 206 challenge), it was funny to see all cars having facom stickers and some of these teams using 100% import tools.

What is your opinion on Unior tools? There's dealer here who carries a lot of the product line. The prices are a bit lower or sometimes at par with Koken.

I just got this right angle pliers. The angles are ok and true but what I noticed is if you tighten it up a bit more the alignment goes out of true. Seems like the jaws get bent if more pressure is applied. I don't know if these are designed for slight clamping pressures only but it looks that way to me. Still thinking if I would return or keep it.

JayL, Unior tools are very well made tools. Their Wrenches are faaaar more better than Facom's. You can't go wrong with Unior.

When I checked out a store in Paris that sold mostly Unior stuff, I wasn't overly impressed with Unior tools in the fit and finish so I wasn't really inspired to purchase a whole lot. I never saw any of the locking pliers though; it was mostly screwdrivers, wrenches, hammers, and various cutting/holding pliers.

I wonder if those Wurth pliers are made by Will?

Checking Unior tools I also found that they have a different approach to their finish. It's a bit on a rough side but seems that it was done on purpose ( unlike the shinny Gearwrench or Koken) . Probably for greasy hands these might be easier to handle.

I don't know how durable these tools are. The screwdrivers and pliers we have at the shop had been seeing hard use for 4 months now and still holding up but up to when. We don't have lifetime warranty so its a concern for me.

I had chance to inspect their 72 tooth ratchets and these seem to be smoother than the 72 tooth SKs that I have. ( take it from somebody who has not tried a Snap on Dual 80 yet).

JayL,

Somewhere deep in this thread there was a discussion over the merits and demerits of the mirror-finish type and the shot-blasted type. European tool-makers, especially German, have been distinguishing their tools with their shot-blasted finish. Aesthetics and safety factors play a key role in this finish. Like you mention, in a greasy environment, the rough finish acts as a safey feature. The obvious nuisance this finished poses is the difficulty in cleaning the tools. In contrast, mirror-finished tools are easy to clean, and although subjective, looks better with the shiny chrome.

Concerning the Unior tools.
I have a boxset of unior that I bought years ago. All the sockets and stuff hold up very well, the finish does indeed look not as good als Snap On, Hazet or Kraftwerk, but does hold up very well. I have not had any chipping on the Unior tools yet.
The ratchets both 1/4 and 1/2 that were in the set, I have trown away allready, because I broke them.
I have to admit, that I broke them during my "there is no such thing as tool-abuse"-years.
Nowadays, I think it is wrong to use a 2kg-hammer to assist a ratchet....

Where do you guys think Unior ranks among the European tool manufacturers?

In regards of image, price or quality?

I've recently seen some unior pricing, and those would put them on equal ground with Facom and Hazet. Might be different online. As with so many things.

Regarding quality, I would put them right onder Facom and Hazet, mainly because I don't use the Unior that much anymore.

Regarding image, way under Facom and Hazet, somewhere down with Matador and Elora.

Only my opinion at this moment in time....

thank you for the "Stayer" pics !!!!!!
Never saw those here except at a fair.
I once found a "Praktika" cold saw from "Berg + Schmid" at a scrap yard similar like the one pictured which surprisingly had a "Stayer" motor (see 2nd pic)

I can`t tell you anything about the Stahlwille air tools. We don`t have them here in germany. In Italy they seem to have different ones. What`s the part/model number of your wrench ??

stahlwilleairtools.jpg

@crustyD3mon:
if you need new (good) blades for your Olfa knife look out for anything with "Solingen" printed on the box or stamped into the blades for example: www.martor.com www.mozart-blades.com www.lutz-blades.com
"Martor" has a distributor in Portugal: http://www.foxsolutions.pt

@JayL:
can you maybe bend the jaws of the pliers that after clamping the metal bar the bars are 90 degree ? But still annoying since you always have to measure. A angle vise will be probably the better solution.

@Wizard1:
nice Wurth pliers !!!!!!!!

The pliers' jaws are always square when light pressure is applied. However when more pressure is applied these start to bend thus goes out of 90 degrees. The more pressure the more bend. You are right in the sense that because of this the angle has to be measured always to make sure it is square. Very annoying.

if the tool was cheap i probably would keep it otherwise i probably would bring it back . Too time consuming for professionel use....
For which type of work do you need the tool and angle iron for car applications ?? install batteries in the trunk ? or as a holder for LPG/Liquefied Petroleum Gas tanks ? or ?

Do the DIY stores/"Home Depot" like stores in Portugal offer tool boxes ?

@ Monte

The pliers pair was not so expensive. IIRC correctly around $34. I'll just keep it and use it to hold square tubing or angle bars or for whatever need arise. I'll rely on other tools for making square 90 degree angle joints. I'm currently building a folding metal workbench.

Any further feedback on the Spanish made Bellota Files? We currently use Honduran made Craftsman but would like to add a few more and these Bellottas are available here.

Thank you all for your replies as well as for the queries on Unior stuff.

Servus,

some while back we talked about bit ratchets. Monte, you asked about the shape of the Berner ratchet I own. I hope this close-up-pictures of the my Berner and Bahco bit ratchets give you a clear idea of their design.

wow nice pics !!! how did you do that :) ??
sweet !! Now we have the proof that the Berner ratchet is from Hi-Five too since the word "Gear hex" is a registered trademark from Hifive..... !..... :) www.uspto.gov
And the 1/4" side looks like the Wera bit ratchet...

@Jay L:
I didn`t use the Bellota file so i can`t tell you, still have to use up my "Pferd" files. I don`t know where the Hondurans buy their steel from but i personally probably would buy the Bellota files if they are available or as another option either "Bahco" files or "Tome Feteira" files both made in Portugal. (or "Vallorbe" from switzerland etc.)
