Tools I never knew I needed until GJ

Every few weeks this forum pops up a new tool I think I need. Current tempting items are pliers, I only have a couple dozen, but still seem to be missing the CRITICAL compound jaw and pistol grip types. No idea how I have survived 50 years without them, not sure how much longer that can go on. ;)

What are some tools you never owned that Garage Journal has tempted you into buying?

I wish I could find a USA made diagonal cutter with compound leverage. I have some discontinued Kobalts that work fine though, Chinese I think.

Check out the NWS German made compound cutters. I saw them in the tools of the old country thread here.

I'd pay that for them Babies, if I needed 'em, sweet looking....only I sure doesn't needs 'em!

Wife would kill's me! :shocking:

I'd don't think I've boughten anything since belonging to this site, but I have seen some great looking tools, in some big boxes, and some Amazing looking Garages.

Who is it...? Olsen, who has used his space to the fullest??? Well, in my simple little opinion. It takes so many of us years and years, but we like what we get, and get what we like.
So many of us don't have un-limited funds, and have wayyy-yy too many "hobbies" we can and WILL do!

Definition of "Hobbies"? In this case it can be "Honey-do" list, "Chores", and just plain old "Things that need Doing".
Cheaper for "Us" to do them instead of hiring a Carpenter, Mechanic, Plumber, Electrician....you name it!

NWS, that one is I think $35 at Chadstoolbox, guy here on the forum also sells them. Expensive, but not SnapOn expensive.

Better than Snap-on. My Snap-on side cutters are ****, been replaced under warranty 3 times, given up getting them replaced now. The tips of the cutting edges chip off, and they've got recurring curface rust. My NWS side cutters show zero wear (and have about 100 times as much use..) and the cutting edges are as good as when i bought them, the finish is still perfect too.

I bought a set of pistol grip needle nose pliers off of Ebay. I wanted to try them out to see if I liked them and they were half the price of a pair off of the truck. I've used them exactly twice in the year that I've had them. I don't even remember that they are there. Save your money.

Here is a curious question; If you are not totally satisfied with a VERY Expensive Tool, such as Snap-On, shouldn't you be able to return it??!!??

I never owned a Snap On tool 'till the GJ. That has changed.

Older, American-made toolboxes under $10 follow me home like lost pups.

the most obvious buys i made because of garage journal reviews and recommendations, were 10" knipex cobras x 2 (was previously using channelock) and wiha insulated screwdrivers (was previously using klein).

there was probably a few others, but i cannot think of them right now. also, these are some of my most frequently used tools.

my next hand tool that i plan on buying will be the 10" knipex pliers wrench (presently using a crescent wrench).

GJ has definitely made my tool collection expand. I still need a lot of tools, but I do have some odd ones that most home owners would NEVER use, such as 2"+ sockets.

I never knew I (we) needed these:

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=99005

Now I have bought a few of them!!

I saw one of those custom handled ratchets last week sitting on the counter at Epstein's. It was a Granco ratchet (made in Grandview MO) with a Wilde handle. That looked very kewl with a red handle. I gotta gets me one of those soon but that day I had my hands full. :p

Jori said it has been stress-tested and works GREAT!

Are the NWS cutters you have that same style?

Multiple screwdrivers, full line up of 1/4 & 1/2 socket sets to add to what I thought was all I needed, my 3/8 set.

And most importantly, the concept that having more than 1 of something is not a waste but a benefit! :)

Multiple ratchets. I had a 1 of each drive size and a couple 3/8. But several of the guys here mentioned that when doing a job, they never remove the socket from a ratchet, and just grab another ratchet instead. Ive been doing that and it makes teh job go quicker. Of course it means that I need more ratchets. :D

Craftsman Thread Restorer set (I used to just use taps - the horror!)

Harbor Freight Hanson-style Socket Racks

Pry bars with the metal cap

...there's got to be more... will keep thinking...

Edit: Some more...

Extra long 1/2 extension - at least 20 inches I think

Offset double box end wrenches
