Tools needed for working at a ford dealership.

Just got a job at a ford dealership. Was wondering if there are any specific tools to look out for, maybe special tools, or just ones that are used a lot on fords but not other makes, etc. Like how long ball hex sockets are basically needed for working on newer german cars, but are otherwise useless. That kind of thing. Garage sale season is starting and it would be cool to know what to look for!

Not sure yet, I'm assuming some of everything. The shop is pretty small though with what looked like only 8k lb lifts, so I probably won't be doing much if any work on the really big stuff.

The SO one is 7.5" would a 6" one be too short? For something like that I'd much prefer to buy from gearwrench.

The hammer was originally made for Chevy's, hence the name, give me the Chevy tool....

Youre going to need 13 and 12 mm 12 pt shallow 3/8 impact sockets for ford drive shafts.


EDIT: Its not every day I meet a Ford man, it seems we are outnumbered. Everyone can tell you the firing order of a Chevy 350, but its never easy to find someone who knows anything extensive about a lot of things. Makes us proud!

I can't count the times people have brought a Ford to me that they just bought and complain that the engine is shaking their teeth out. I aways found right off the bat that someone had put a pre 80's 302 in place of a newer 5.0 car/truck or vice versa ..and used wrong balance flywheel.

Plastic no marr prybars (for interior work and gasket scraping)
Oil/fuel filter sockets for diesels (32mm i think)
Stretch belt tool
rad kit plus/airlift tool for cooling systems

It's Eighties slang. It's how us old-timers used to describe our really, really cool tool kits.


Shampoop, do you already have a lot of basic tools? Have you worked as a mechanic before? I would like to suggest a power steering pulley remover/installer if you don't have one already. And at least an 18 mm crowsfoot for p/s lines, flare nut type to break loose.

Rad kit plus is snappys version of airlift which ises vacuum to refill cooling systems

I bought my streth belt kit from a gates rep who visited but pretty sure they are all the same

YEP! BIG TIMES!!! that why i just skip a lot of step by step that warranty said to do... they did ask me why i do that. i told them that if warranty dont pay good then i dont want put a lot of time for freebie works!!

i has been reading and monitor the Discuss board in PTS website, lot of techs already bash and ******* about SLTS and horror things in ford website....

i had not say anything because i just dont want say....


i like my job as more and more chrysler, jeep and dodge come back to have me to fix because not other techs want to do those...

i am work for largest ford shop in state.... i am plan to stay there as long if they keep me working... service manager has favors to have me to do works..

I saw the BFH but not the flame-wrench. You can pick up that radio tool at just about any Advance Auto or the like for about $10.

Not sure. It's not a very big dealership so I'm guessing there aren't a whole lot of specialists there.
