As I sit here with an infection in my system so the doc says. I have bery bad health and I figure that my heart beat so bad I will strok out one of these days.

If this thread has been done before forgive me for I do not want to sin. LOL
You can delet it if you want. Nothing bothers me but my old age. LOL

The Question/////////

Has anyone ever just had to have a tool and spent the money on it and has never used it. I have a shop full and I would not know whre to start. I collect and if it a nice tool I refuse to use it and use my old ****. LOL

And while your are at it list the worst functiong tool you have ever owned.

I was thinking that if we hate or don't use the tool that we could have a tool exchange and find a happy home for what we don't use.

Some where in this post I am sure I have broken the rules. I always do. LOL

It is not easy being a German, Jew. I get up fighting with myself every morning. :lol_hitti

I bought some Craftsman bolt-extractors when they were on sale, hoping that because I now own them, I will never need them.

So far, I've never used them.

So far...

I am in the same boat with my Cman bolt extractors as well as my nut splitter... never used.

A tool that I have grown to dislike is my knipex needle nose pliers. Those things bend and flex so easy that I just hate using them. I don't understand why they were designed this way. :dunno:

I'm carefully assess the situation before buying tools. If I'm buying a tool that I know I will use a lot for a long time, I spend the big bucks and buy a quality tool. If I'm buying a tool that might get occasional use once every few years, I go to Harbor Freight or a local store selling cheap tools.
This way, I don't end up with lots of money invested in tools that don't pay their way.

I don't think I ever used my drum brake wheel cylinder hone. Easier to just replace the cylinder. Same with calipers.

That has nothing to do with being a German, Jew, i am German from the swabian area and i am in the same boat, i have a small 1/4 " tool set from Ace Hardware which i bought years ago, and this is the first set i take my hands on when it comes to projects (BTW, it's still complete).

I own tools i probably will never ever use (the weird thinking of: "...there will be a situation where you need it at 4 am in the morning when you're working on a project....")

I am not sure if i can say that i really "hate" a tool i own.....maybe the cheap Craftsman - Evolv pliers i bought one as a set....(but i still find myself using them at nasty little jobs.......).

Best wishes for your health !!

Sorry for your health issues, not a club you want to join.

I buy tools I haven't needed yet. Bought a Snap on 1 1/16 socket today from pawn shop and I had recently bought a brand new one to finish out a set(gloom!) I probably can swap it for something. Bought a 13mm 3/8 drive Craftsman deep socket because it was the second generation metric design, thinking I didn't need it to use but have been using it the whole afternoon. On the other hand, I have not yet needed the HarborFfreight pliers that work in th eopposite direction to expand things.

Worst performing tool was a HF ball joint separator that split the first time I used it.

I work with a guy who does this, He has tools he bought 2 years ago in his box still wrapped in plastic. Complains about the old stuff but refuses to use the new. I dont get it. Might not be the same senerario as you describe. I guess the old saying goes, better to have and not need, than need and not have..

Off topic: Do you have the electrician needle noses or the mechanics ones? They make two versions...the ones at Lowes and sears are electrical ones. I have the mechanics versions (without cutter) and have not had any flex issues at all.

Back on topic... carbon scrapers. Have two sets...dont really use them...just wanted them...

The only tools I don't use that I own are ones my mother has given me. No offense to mom, she has gotten it right many times. But a few sit on the shelf. Some of the tools she has given me get used for purposes they weren't entirely intended for though. I also have some tools I don't use because they need restoration/refurbishment. I think I will go tinker with those now...

I think every older mechanic has the tool for replacing the Olds toronado CV boots. I have not used mine in about 20 years.

I bought the Northstar Waterpump socket. Used it 1 time and have not seen another.

Several months ago I bought a beat to hell CP 1/2" impact gun at an estate sale for, I think, $20. I have a Crapsman compressor so I have fired it up a time or two making cool pit stop like sounds, but have no idea why the hell I bought it unless maybe I start rotating my own tires. Which, of course, will require the purchase of a decent floor jack.

Plenty of tools I have bought and don't use as well.
Craftsman Nut Cracker (probably needed it at some point and just forgot I had it)
Snap On Rethreading Tool for pipe or big spindles just in case I ever messed up threads on a 4x4 spindle (have never even unwrapped it).
Mircometers where i could find them for cheap. I have Fowler 1-2", 2-3", and 3-4" (just opened the box to look at them sometimes) Same with a Browne & Sharpe Depth Gauge (haven't needed it YET).

I could go on for days with tools I don't need.

Add me to the list of Craftsman bolt removers. And a nut splitter. I bought them because I just knew one day I would use them and I'd have to walk to the store to get them!!

A while ago I read a magazine talking about "Strike Finders". A strike finder is a piece of equipment in smaller aircraft that display lightening strikes on a screen, allowing you to better plan to go thru weather (basically a poor man's weather radar). Well, this article talked about this guy who bought one, and to this day hasn't ever had to use it. Hilarious but good in a sense that he hasn't ever been flying when bad weather prevailed.

1" drive ratchet. Used it a total of once and never had any need for it again. Also have a ½" drive 1½" chrome socket that does nothing other than gather dust.

All my SAE stuff. Sold most of them off now. Just one set of RP wrenches and a sockets left. Who knows I might get a harley one day when I am older and need a slow bike.

I have a CMan RP combo wrench size 1 1/16" that I bought in unused condition for $4 at a salvage store. I have never encountered a nut that size that I needed to turn, but, dammit, I now have the wrench for it if nescessary.

I also have a dovetail jig I bought at the woodworking show that comes through town every year that has never seen action in the 3+ years I've owned it. Looked pretty easy to use in the show demo, but, well you know the rest of that story!

They have the cutter so they must be the electrical... I did get them at Lowes. I wish they had labeled them better. Thanks for pointing that out.

Someday you'll need to tighten the nut on a Ford EGR tube.

And when that day comes you'll be ready.:rocker:

Nut drivers. I just had to have a set of nut drivers, bought both the standard and metric ones from Craftsman. They just sit in the toolbox and I always use a deep socket out of habit. After the job is done I always remember my new untouched nut drivers. Doh!

Larger crowfoot wrenches. I only vary rarely use the smaller ones, never the larger.

I bought my large crowfoot wrenches for A/C work before I quit wrenchin' in '97. I've been back doing this for a couple of years and most cars have quick-connects so I don't hardly ever see the large size fittings any more.

I was totally out of the tool/mechanic scene for 25 years. One of the first tools I noticed once I got back into it were the ratchet wrenches. Being cheap (and needing lots of tools) I waited for a bargain before buying some to try. I saw this set on ebay that no one was buying for about a month so I finally made a move when the price was dropped to $19.99. It was a set of 22 carat gold plated Canadian tire wrenches made by gear wrench. They came in a nice wood box too but I didn't care, I fully intended to use them as they were cheaper than the regular un-gold plated wrenches on the shelf BUT my buddy had a fit when I showed them off to him and convinced me not to ever use them. Now they just sit in my spare box.

5/8" "heavy" nuts use an 1-1/16" wrench, also 5/8 "hard" bolts in structural iron work.

Stubby wrenches, I bought a (Danaher) Kobalt set on clearance. I think I've used them once or twice in the last year, and that was just for the sake of using them. A Makita Sawz-All. I know alot of people use these on a regular basis, but I never do renovation work and around the shop I use a hacksaw, an angle grinder (with a cut off wheel if required) or even my circular saw. 13/16 sockets and wrenches are other tools I own that hardly get any use.

It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it!

Believe it or not, I have A LOT of tools...but they all get used. They might not get used a lot...but once or twice a year I usually use everything in my box (not counting the multiple's I have of each item...I have 3 or 4 complete wrench sets and 2 or 3 complete ratcheting wrench sets).

I work on my motorcycle, ATV's, old trucks (rust), even older junk trucks (more rust), and my new truck (DD). I work on the suspension/axles/engine/interior...so that includes 4-5mm bolts inside, and 1"+ bolts underneath. I also do a little bit fabrication and welding in between. So I've got the broad spectrum covered...

Same boat here. I bought the Craftsman SAE and Metric sets when they were on sale for $20 each. Only one Ive ever used would be the 1/4'' nutdriver!

Twice actually! Taking sheet metal screws out of a fridge and changing the air filter in my truck
