Multitool with pliers.
4-1 or 6-1 screwdriver.
Multimeter
hammer
hacksaw

Can force your way thru most projects with these. 6-7 would be an adjustable wrench and/or smaller pipe wrench.

Since I started this thread thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.

All industrial sized man tools for a *lazy* manly man:

Tire Changer and aligner (counts as 1 sometimes)
4 post lift
Parts washer
Easily Cleanable floor

and... Well... Beer. Cheers!

For the garage? This is easy:

1. Oxy/Acetylene torch.
2. Good Vise.
3. Anvil.
4. Six pound club hammer.
5. Smaller hammers.

Socket set 1/4 3/8 1/2, screwdriver set, plier set, set of hammers all types, bench vise. Most minor things can be done with these tools. I know they are more than 5, but are 5 catagories. Men should always strive to get every tool they can get except for the novelty tools. I try and get a new tool each week wether it is an upgrade or an addition. Stay away from HF tools if possible. Mostly junk. Consumables are okay like grinding discs and sanding supplies. I still prefer USA made wire brushes, they are getting hard to find.

I'm definitely with the "Basics" post:

Claw hammer - you can frame, finish, pull nails, hit a punch/chisel, or just plain whack the living s*** out of something
Crescent Adj. Wrench - aka poor guy's wrench set
Channellock pliers - something to hold the other end when your "poor guy's wrench set" is holding the other side
Phillips screwdriver - which will probably get used as a punch at some point
Flathead Screwdriver - aka chisel, prybar, paintcan opener, etc
*Handsaw I know, that's 6, but some things need cuttin'

2nd Tier Needs: sources of light, fire and beer

1. A vague idea of what you are doing.
2. Angle grinder
3. Welder (no particular type)
4. Screwdriver asst.
5. Pliers
Now that you are done with your first attempt....
1. Internet
2. Tape measure (to figure out where the f*** it went wrong)
3. More welding rod (or wire)
4. New screwdrivers since your old ones broke when chiseling
5. Band-aids

Common sense is the most important tool/safety gear you will ever own. That and of course..... A BIG F****** HAMMER.

The first 5 that came to me are: hammer, pliers, saw, measuring tape, and a screwdriver(I'll cheat on this one...4 way multi bit). If pressed I might trade the tape measure for a light.

Caveman style: knife, flint, axe, and...

oh ****, just give me two hammers!

I'd agree with most of the above but I'd like to add a 12" hacksaw frame and blade to the list- as well as cutting metal it can be used to cut small sections of wood or plastic. No power cords, easily controlled and no special safety equipment required!
