I’m still in the “looking around” phase before I get to the actual “shopping” phase, but I have narrowed it down a bit.

Background: 24 x 30 footprint. One-and-a-half story with attic trusses giving a 10x30 room upstairs. Flooring installed to allow storage between the trusses. 2 x 4 studs in the walls, so only R-13 insulation. Full-length baffles between the trusses, then R-13. Also have R-13 in the bottom chord of the trusses. Upstairs area is also used as lounge area with futon and TV.

I have done some calculations and found I will need 15-18,000 BTU on each level. The layout upstairs will require a floor console air handler to fit under the window. My concern, and the reason for this post, is that all of the wall-mount units I have seen that I would use in the main shop downstairs discharge the cooled air from the bottom. Ceiling height is 8’, so air will be coming out below head height (I’m not short) and dumping right onto one of the workbenches. Are there any units that discharge from the top, which will run along the ceiling?

Check out Pioneer from Blue Ridge. They have wall, ceiling and floor mount units for indoors. I think what you want is floor, it discharges out the top front.

I will use a floor unit upstairs, but need a wall unit in the main shop.

I would prefer a top-discharge unit if one is available.

Ceiling cassette mounts flush with ceiling most manufacturers offer them. Condensate has a pump built-in.

Ceiling cassettes are also considerably less efficient, not to mention they are NOT the topic of the question.

I was hoping that at least one of the many HVAC guys here might know of a manufacturer that offers a top-discharge WALL unit. :dunno:

When you say wall .... are you talking normal type of head? If so -- I have never seen one.

If you need a high self contained they make the ones that hang .... It's basically one of the concealed in a case.

The floor units will discharge out the top. I have used one ... in heat mode they split (part down) if you want and part of the output is reheated for warmer air. The floor units can also be partially recessed in the wall.

I have also used the cassettes for the second floor of a cape ... sort of what you are doing in your second floor.

I'm not sure i agree with the efficiencies on the ceiling ...... the wall units from the better manufacturers have more features. My ceiling unit are Mitsubishi .... they have a new model

The floor mount units I am familiar with are dual fan units. They blow up in cooling and across the floor in heat. The normal high wall units in heat will blow down to the floor and in cooling will blow horizontally so the cool air settles into the space. In your 8' room it will not, oops, there I go again, should not be a problem unless you are 6'6" or taller.

I guess it won't be a problem, because I'm only 6'5" tall. :wtf:

I guess I'll have to settle for a down-firing wall unit, as I don't have room on the floor to put a console there. :dunno:

On the other hand, I have been known to get a bit "creative".
I might come up with something to get the air back up, so it can travel across the ceiling. :wtf:

You can adjust the louvre so it blows mostly horizontal if that is better.

Otherwise I might think about mounting a floor unit Up high on the wall if you’re not worried about proper air distribution.

What about a ceiling suspended style? It hangs below the ceiling and directs air along the ceiling. This is just one manufacturer I found with a quick search to show the idea:
Thanks, tomtom. I will have to see how the drain works with that one, it might actually work on both levels.

Now to see if there is a multi-zone outdoor unit that will handle two of them.

As mentioned earlier, the discharge on a standard wall unit will be below head height, so it won't effectively reach the warmer air at the ceiling. Moving the louvers to a horizontal position will cool my waist rather nicely, but I like breathing cooler air, too.

I barely have room for a standard wall unit, and that is only because I have stapled a piece of cardboard the approximate size to the wall to reserve the space. I have already used up any excess wall space that might be occupied by the larger floor console that would be mounted on the wall. :dunno:

Have the heat stratify at the ceiling is common .... don't concern yourself too much with that. When you AC -- it's all based on 6' and under. 8' in a church or space like that.

Think of a widow unit -- or if you are in a motel room .... the AC is low in the room.

People here don't like the cassettes -- I have two of them w/o issue. They are used all over the country. They were a problem solver for me in a space with no good wall areas .... Big cape cod .. with radiators.
