Toptul Ratchet Crimper for Open barrel terminals - Problems…

I bought the toptul ratchet crimper last week, and tried it out, it hasn’t really impressed me if I’m honest.

I am using TE open barrel terminals, and 0.75mm^2 wire, and a 6.35mm spade rated for 0.5-1mm^2

I tested it out in the smallest part of the die, stamped 0.5-1.

The terminal crimped, and got stuck, it was as if the die is too tight, so I tried the middle die, too loose.

I adjusted the crimp pressure, and tried another 10-15 times, no joy, it’s either far too tight, and makes the terminal get stuck, or too loose, and doesn’t hold the wire.

Does anyone have any experience with the toptul crimper?
Maybe the dies are junk?

I was going to buy a bluepoint die, as it looks like it will fit, worth a shot? £20 though is a lot to pay when I already paid nearly £100 for the toptul set.

Cheers

What's the part number? I have sold, and use TOPTUL'S ratchet crimper for normal insulated solderless terminals and it works great. The part number I use is: https://www.toptul.com/en/product-324890/6PCS-Quick-Interchangeable-Ratchet-Crimping-Tool-Kit.html
That’s the same as the one I have. I don’t use insulated terminals, so I have no experience with them.
I’m not too sure what’s happening, maybe it’s user error.

looks like I’m back to the Sargent 1028

This seems to get a lot of discussion on Facebook on the motorsports wiring alliance page. I'd really like to get a decent set of open barrel crimpers but the cost kills it for me. Figure I use it maybe once every few years...

So far, the Sargent 1028CT, well, I bought the Mac tools rebrand on eBay for a good price, new, has been giving me really solid crimps.

I wanted to try out a ratchet crimper as I had a ton of crimps to make the past few weeks, so I was rather disappointed that the toptul didn’t work for me, and tbh, I don’t really have any other uses for it, apart from maybe wire end ferrules for household electrics, though my Knipex do the job ok for that.

I doubt I can send it back now as it has a few marks on it from me having to pry out the terminals that got stuck in the dies.

Won't hurt to see if they'll take them back anyway. I'm just a hobbyist whose a bit more picky than most. I hate to admit it but I didn't even really know what an open barrel crimp was until about a month ago. It was one of those "where have you been all my life" situations. I hardly ever use this type of stuff, but on occasion I do build harnesses and when I do I like them to be as perfect as I can manage.
