I have both a clicker (5-80 ft-lb) and a split-beam (50 - 250 ft-lb) torque wrench which I keep in their original cases and handle them with care. I turn both down to minimum setting after use but I don't think you need to do that for the split-beam. It's more rugged which is their big advantage although I think you trade that off against a little less precision. However, you absolutely need to turn down the clicker.

I picked up a 3/8" Proto and 1/4" SO on ebay w/o cases, so I bought a couple of expendable HF torque wrenches and thieved the blow molded cases for the good wrenches. Don't really care about the HF wrenches - keep one in my storage unit for lugnuts and such noncritical uses

^I was going to suggest this.

Buy $9.99 Harbor Freight Torque Wrench,
throw wrench in the trash where it won't hurt anyone,
put good wrench in the case.

I had a brand new HF 3/8" torque wrench that was reading about 75% under right out of the box.

I have four torque wrenches. Three came with blow molded cases, one has no case. The one with no case is stored in a cardboard tube like the one wrapping paper comes with, and then put a drawer.

This is the best idea I've seen (IMO):

.

I like it. especially if you use them every day. And having them right there on the side of your tool box, may encourage you to use one, in times you would just say "F-it, it's too far over there, in my 'special cabinet'. Ill just torque to feel this time"

All the torque wrenches that came in a case reside therein, set to the lowest setting, and stored in the roller chest or a large cabinet. The couple I have without cases are stored in a toolbox drawer together.

I have several SO Techwrenches/Techangles. If I don't think I will be using them anytime in the near future, I remove the batteries from the tools and keep them separately in the case.
