I have both a clicker (5-80 ft-lb) and a split-beam (50 - 250 ft-lb) torque wrench which I keep in their original cases and handle them with care. I turn both down to minimum setting after use but I don't think you need to do that for the split-beam. It's more rugged which is their big advantage although I think you trade that off against a little less precision. However, you absolutely need to turn down the clicker.
