have you eve needed one and where? also where 5 point torx bolts are common beside air flow sensor on vw's?

Never had the need to use them, nor have I seen one in the wild, but I do not turn a wrench for a living, just fix or upgrade some things that I can do myself on one euro and one Japanese car.
I would buy a set of sockets/bits to do a job if I came across it, but not otherwise.

The first picture is tamper proof Torx aka security Torx, the second picture is tamper proof Torx Plus aka Security Torx Plus.

Thanks for clarifying this. I've never come across the Torx Plus but I had heard there was a different style. On the regular security Torx, I just use a punch or a small chisel and break off the pin so I can use a regular Torx driver.

Old Leatherman Tools and even new ones need security bits. But the old ones are pentalobe

My Volvo S60 has the Security Torx Plus (5 star torx security) screws to hold the MAF to the housing. I had to use a screwdriver to remove it and replace the screws with normal torx screws. Only time I have ever come across that particular screw head.
