I'm thinking about upgrading my Torx screwdrivers. I'm considering a tamper resistant Torx set as those should work for both tamper Torx and standard Torx, correct?

Would I be giving up anything by getting the tamper torx? They may be slightly weaker than the standard Torx, but is that enough reason to pass on them?

OTOH, I've never *needed* a tamper Torx. But when that day comes I'll be glad I have them.

Depends on what you use them for. Light work is ok. But stuff like Harley engines, rotors etc. will twist or break the tamper-resistant Torx.

You will need them.Screws holding on GM mass air flow sensors use tamper resistant torx screws. Some Chrysler ignition switches have one torx resistant screw.

Ive broken a few tamper torx. So I only really use them when I need to. Id go ahead and buy your normal torx set and just get a cheapo set of tamper torx bits.

if we are just talking screwdrivers, i doubt you will get enough torque on them to find the strength difference between the tamper resistant and regular. I own both in socket form, but have them split between work and home. The other option of course is to buy them in 1/4" bits that would get you both, and should work in 99% of needed applications.

Buy a normal torx set and if you run into a tamper proof screw just break the middle tab. Now your able to use the regular torx bit on the screw.

Breaking the center tab on a tamperproof torx fastener isn't a recommended option as on some applications where these are used, you'll screw up the part. If you haven't used them yet, I would opt for a quality bit set and use a magnetic screwdriver instead of buying a whole set of handled tamperproof torx drivers but, that's just me.

I had to go get tamper proof torx sockets when taking seats out of either a chevy s-10 or a volvo 850. Don't remember, but was surprised to see such a big tamper torx. Get both.

Buy a great set of Security Torx tools, then buy the Torx as needed. That's what I did and it worked out great.

As it turns out, you end up buying Security Torx in the smaller and middle sizes, large for the Torx. I have 5/16 bits for Torx and 3/8 Torx socket set. All Wiha and all less than $50.

This is what I have that covers about 99% of my Torx needs...
Wiha #76396 8 Piece TORX Bit 3/8 Socket Set On Rail T20, T25, T27, T30, T40, T45, T50, T55

You can get that set for $30.49 from MJMNATIONAL eBay.

Buy both. I don't know how the prices compare to yesterday, but if bought individually you could walk away with a set of the PB Swiss cross handled screwdrivers for $29 (T6, T7, T8, T9, T10, T15, T20, T25).

Thanks for all the feedback and ideas. I may end up looking at a bit set as I am a little short on toolbox space at the moment.

For hand turning fasteners with screwdrivers can I use tamper-proof torx screwdrivers on torx fasteners without damage the tips of screwdrivers for sixes 15-40?

Or get all the bits for your Snappy screwdriver.
