Toyota tech question

I just purchased a 08 tundra 4 x 4. This is a wrecked vehicle that I plan to put back together. I usually do one wreck every 4 or 5 years and use them as my daily driver.

Anyways, the drivers side steering bag is the only srs deployed. Will need to get the bag and seat belt replaced and the ecu reflashed or replaced before I can get the thing inspected.

My question involves the four wheel drive switch. I notice on the dash that I have the air bag symbol lit as well as the traction control light. The dash is blinking the four high and four low light at about 1/2 second rate. The truck does not engage the four wheel drive when the switch is turned to four high or four low. Is there a tie in between the srs and the four wheel drive? And if there is, does replacing the srs parts and getting the srs ecu replaced, allow me to have four wheel drive?

I'm fully expecting to have to take this to a Toyota dealer and have the Tech Stream hooked up to have some of the computer problems dealt with. Just would like to have a bit of info before I go forward. Any info will be greatly appriciated.

Thanks

check out tundrasolutions.com there's a lot of smart guys on there and you can probably get your answer from a search.

I'm a member of that board. I just hate the forum, there are so many adds that the board is slow as hell. Just painful spending time there. I was hoping someone from this board had some info. I'll post as a last resort.

Thanks

Can't help with the Toy question. But, use Firefox as your browser with the Adblock extension. Now you can visit the tundra site without all the garbage.

I have an 08 as well, only issue I have had with the 4wd system as it is a PITA if it doesnt want to shift into or out of 4wd. I really miss having a shifter lever. And the traction control lights will blink if their is an issue with the ABS.

Not a Toyota answer, but when you replace a driver's airbag, you are supposed to replace the "clock spring" too. Is it possible that that is causing the issue? Do all of the buttons (and the horn) on the wheel work properly?

I'm aware of the clock spring repacement, never gave it a thought to try the horn. The one existing turn signal functions, the right signal was the victim of blunt force trauma.

I know I will have to get the various parts repaired first, was just wondering if anyone on the board had something similar going on with a crashed tundra. Lot of knowledge here, and it doesn't hurt to ask.

Personally, this sounds like a possibly stuck selector motor on the transfer case. Or perhaps damaged wiring on the transfer case?

I have no idea....I'm lost!
We have an 05 Sequoia that had something similar happen in regards to the 4wd and traction control and I believe the roll stability control. It was in the inspection station for the emission inspection. They had removed the gas cap to check it for vacuum/pressure (part of the inspection) Well, the inspector did not tighten the cap back. 10 miles down the road the check engine light came on, along with all the other lights mentioned above, plus it would not shift into 4wd (winter time and snowing!) I got out my code reader and it had one code associated with the gas cap. I cleared the code and everything went back to working properly...plus I tighted the gas cap! My point is that Toyota computers are set up weird. Loose gas cap equals no 4wd! So once you replace the airbag and clear codes you might be okay. Then again you may have an actual issue with the transfer case. Our 05 has had the actuators replaced under warranty once in the transfer case. They have a habit of sticking if not used a lot. This is why my truck has manual hubs and a shifting lever for the transfer case!
One last thing, youj mentioned about reflashing the ECM for inspection.......does a wreck set a code or something that can't just be cleared? Just curious. These computers are ruining it all! Our Sequoia has a computer for the back glass and wiper. Basically if the window is down at all the wiper won't work. If the wiper is on the window won't go down. Makes sense, but a few micro switches on the window regulator would have done the same job instead of friggin micro chips!

"skilled amitures" can't clear crash codes in the SRS ECU. Last project I did I had to replace the SRS ECU. (not cheap). I have found a few places that claim that they can reprogram the SRS ECU and/or delete the crash code. Price is nice, so I'm going to give this a go. I wish I could clear that crash code, but this one of the things I have no problem letting the pros' take care of.

I expect this project will take me better part of a year to finish, so I will try to remember to report back as I make headway.

I still have to take a look at the links posted above.

Read the threads posted on that forumn, sounds very similar to what I got going on. Will try it while moving. Hopefully it not the water in the actuator thing. Truck is now living in a heated shop and don't plan on leaving it outside to find out if it works when the H2O turns to ice.

By the way, the horn does work, Does anyone know with the new, controlled air bags, does it always burn the contacts in the clock spring? I do know that the truck did not take a very hard hit. I'm wondering if the bag was only commanded to partually deploy.

I've tried to use a clockspring that had been through an airbag-deployed wreck and had checked out good. The car was back in a week for a new clockspring.

The clock springs are cheap enough. From what I've heard, I would be time ahead to just change it out. Gonna go that route. I wish the bags were that cheap.
