So I am debating whether buying a new toolbox tomorrow night due to the fact I have NO way of getting it home. Its 125 dollars for a flat bed service. There is no lift gate I can rent and the guy selling it says its too heavy for two guys to put in the back of a pickup. WTF. Any ideas? I dont have a tow hitch and a hitch setup will run me 300 dollars plus a trailer rental.

buy an engine hoist and use that to lift it into the bed of a pickup.

or, rent a small moving truck and get some long 2x8 or 2x10s to ramp in.

Try 3 guys lifting into a pickup, one in front and 2 on the sides. If you don't have one i'm sure yo know someone who does.

How much does it weigh? Do the drawers possibly come out?

If you know someone with a pickup truck, the idea of using a pair of 2x8's or 2x10's and perhaps a come-along would work (bit difficult perhaps, but doable IMHO).

Assuming the box isn't hours away from home, gas and dinner (or some beer, ... + favor owed) as a nice thank you gesture, should be cheaper than renting a truck. ;)

Do you have a UHaul dealer near you? Many of their trks come with a lower body position and a pullout ramp that two people can push a box up. In my area you can rent one for $19.95 a day plus the usual extras.

uhaul will cost 19.99 plus .80 cents to a dollar per mile and then you have to refuel it. Lowes or home depot has pickup trucks for 19.99 for 75 mins regardless of the miles put on it but you still have to refuel it.

Go to home depot and rent a truck there. It's like $20 for the first 75 minutes or something like that. Unless it a longer drive and the $125 fee gets you door to door loaded and unloaded it is hard to swallow.

If your not tight for money, just pay the flatbed fee and drink some beer waiting for them to deliver it.

They will take it off the the flatbed right?

It weighs around 550 lbs empty.
Four guys should be able to lift it up to pick up bed.
maybe use some cross beams under box.

But it may be best to use flatbed.

Renting a box truck without the gas will be 109 and I still have to load it. Flat bed seems the best way.

Yep, I'd throw some dough at that problem and just make it go away too.
Cheers.

Hi, I just bought a matco 4s double bay tool box from someone about 4 months ago and transported it home in the back of my pickup truck. I purchased 2 - 2x10's 10 foot long and mounted those metal ramp plates, which you can get at Homedepot or lowes for $20, on the ends. I removed all the draws from the box and with the help of the original owner and a freind that came with me, one in front of the box to guide and two in the back to push, got it in the truck with no problem. Then when it came time to unload it I removed the draws again and tied a rope around the box (or around the two castors on the bottom of the box) and feed the rope thru the tied down loops in the truck bed (most pickups have loops already mounted in the bottom corners of the bed) and used the rope to help lower the box down and control it, while the other person helped slow it down from the front. If you feel more comfortable you can place jack stands under the 2x10's to help with the load but the 2x10's were strong engough with out them. Hope this helps.

This. No fuss, no muss.

Talk to the flatbed guy yourself. Tell him he can do the job on his own schedule when he's got nothing else going on - maybe he'll cut you a break.
