Trash Can: All Junk?

Can you even buy a decent trash can today?

I'm back at my suburban place and the only decent designed cans I have are the ones from Sears -- they have to be 25 year old. Most are now shot. This is why I used to love Sears -- they had all that basic stuff .. USA ... good quality.

The old Sears round can (hard plastic) had a real lid .. not that frisbee on the Rubbermaids -- even the better Brute version is junk. The bigger Rubbermaid with wheels ... lid design is worthless .... mine is broken like all the others in the neighborhood. I still have two decent Sears cans with attached lids -- I'm using them for real trash.

I have township trash collection -- Trash /recycle/ yard waste. This time of year you have to place the yard waste in cans ... the rubbermaid cans are a pain to drag and the one with wheels flexes too much. I'm ready for a bunch of new ons

... And yes I am OCD about my trash --

They will have the HD with wheels and lids kind they use.
20 and 30 gal

You may have to put a patch over their logo.

Like mx suggested. U-Line baby, they got the shitz. I just bought some industrial 55 gallon units for my shop and a job site last October. They are the real deal and they come in several lovely designer colors. I went with the ever fashionable safety yellow.

Check out a brand called Toter. Expensive but nice.

X2. Between the mailman ramming running into them (saw it with my own eyes) and the garbage men dragging them on the flat bottom instead of rolling them on the wheels, I went trough about 8 in the last 26 years. Got a decent sized Toter about 8 years ago and have been very happy. Lid hinges haven't broken, bottom hasn't worn through.

I've been pretty happy with the Rubbermaid Brute, but had a hard time finding bags to fit it. The big box stores sell the cans, but don't sell bags that fit. Our trash service provides a rolling bin for home pick-up.

I was researching good trash cans then gave up when Waste Pro forced it's customers to rent their cans. The Toter cans look like the Waste Pro / Uline cans, but half the price of Uline.

What size is it? What you need is Rubbermaid Accufit trash bags - come in sizes up to 55 gal I know for sure. They fit most of the rubbermaid containers like a glove without a lot of wasted bag hanging over. I sell them at work on my route, but not sure where you would get them otherwise.

You might poke around on here: https://www.rubbermaidcommercialproducts.com/5010-88-polyliner-bags-fits-55-us-gal-2082-l-drum-100-pieces

The Uline is for the trucks w/ lift -- it's too heavy for regular trash service. I have the Uline out in the country where I pay Waste Management for pick up. No yard waste allowed .. I gave up at that property and pay a landscaper.

The Brute cans are OK -- they don't drag well full of leaves and grass .. and the lids ****.

The old sears cans would glide over the lawn

None of the above hold up to rats/squirrels. I've got Brutes and Toters, all with chewed holes. The price for living in the country. . .and cannot find a metal can that is large enough.

For one, the Rubbermaid bags are expensive! 55 gallon bags don't fit- too narrow. I found bags online, but had to do some digging around. The point is- the retailer selling the cans doesn't sell the stupid bags.

I don't set my cans out for the G-men, only the bags, but only out on the morning when they're coming. I have put a little ammonia in the bags if I HAVE to set them out the night before. I've read/heard that covers the smell of any food inside to keep the animals away.

My go-to can is a 55 gallon VP fuel drum with the top cut out, bagged using Sam's Club liners. A piece of OSB and some small casters from Harbor Freight for a base and it's mobile. Can was free from the drag strip.

As for service pickup cans, those are specified and rented from the contracted waste disposal company. You don't get to pick.

I've been using a Brute with the dolly for 11 years now. It's all scratched up, but still sound.

I don't know what bags I use. My boss gets them for me from one of his suppliers. They come in a plain white box with just a size label and are a little pricey, but they're much better quality that what you can get from a box store.

I have a can by wife bought from Lowes that is the thinnest, weakest can I've ever seen. Its the biggest pile I've ever seen. She only bought it because its blue. I'm going to go with a Brute (in blue of course) but the problem is...

I DON'T KNOW HOW TO THROW THE OLD BLUE CAN AWAY...

Ha, I hear ya. Throwing away a trash can here is quite difficult. I had to cut mine up and bag it.

+1 They're solidly build roto-molded. There is one weakness I spotted though when I got mine. The wheels are fantastic, and will totally protect the rear of the can from being abraded on the ground, but the front only has a molded in ridge to wear down before you start grinding through the bottom.

So, I bought a pack of "flying saucer" bearings, drilled a few holes and riveted them in place in the front corners (do this on a new can, so it's not nasty crawling into the bottom of the can to pop the rivets). Even if they don't roll so well on my pavement, the steel will prevent the plastic there from ever wearing.
