Trends you see when looking at tools on Craigslist!

It probably happens everywhere but one thing I’ve noticed on my local CL lately is people listing their whole tool collection and box for about 5-10 times what it’s worth. It will be listed as “all snap-on, mac, and Craftsman” and it’s like 10 rusty craftsman sockets and the rest is some harbor freight and some grocery store junk in a friction slide craftsman box and they ask $3,000.00

I also said it in a different thread the other day, but only once have I seen a snap-on box for a reasonable price. They are asking 80% of what it would cost new, leave it up for months/years and say “no low ballers, I know what it’s worth.”

Does your area have funny trends that you notice?

Everyone "knows what its worth" 6 months after the first post when its still unsold for the same firm price....

Used prices approach the price for new tools. The listings continue on... with tools unsold. If something is priced to move, it moves quickly.

I see an ad in my area for a toolbox, $5000 firm. The seller has a couple of not-so-great pics of it, and I think it's some Snap-on box with a couple of other-brand addons, plus a vise. It's been posted without changes every so often for months.

What gets me about it is the seller says that he will accept layaway for up to one year, but with the condition that if buyer changes his mind, no money will be returned.

Otherwise, I see radial arm saws with very optimistic pricing. But I suppose that's pretty much a universal too.

I am a patient hunter unless opportunity presents itself. If the prey is available for the right price, I pounce. The prey that isn't reasonable to reel in I sit in the bushes until they are desperate and weak...then I pounce with a low cash offer and no expectations of coming home with the prey.

If you hunt with a empty stomach you will end up paying more.

?

So if its a reasonable price why hasn’t it moved in months/years?

The tools as investment myth is weird, but i’ll grant you, persistent.
Its a narrow, narrow, tiny group of folks
that would live with used when they could pay the additional 20% for new, color and layout of choice. IMO, 80% of new is not reasonable if its sitting unsold for months. (yeah, math nerds, it’s an additional 25% from that angle, i know)

Wife: "You better sell that stuff."
Husband: (lists stuff at unreasonable price) "I'm trying to sell it. It's not my fault there aren't any buyers"

I see this often, too. Seems to be a case of trying to believe the whole TRULY is greater than the sum of its parts. I just chuckle and move on.

Although recently I saw a couple of Craftsman 26" friction slide boxes mostly full (but far from packed) for $4500. It was ridiculous. Within a week it had dropped to $3000 and within a few weeks was at $1500. But it wasn't even worth that.

The problem then becomes the seller THINKS they've dropped "so much" but they're still WAY above market value. The whole lot was worth $500 on a good day

That one is not absurdly out of line assuming its a top chest and not a carry box, and depending on what is in the drawers especially if it has a couple of nice ratchets in it. I typically only pay what the tool box is worth and don't pay extra for what is in it unless it is something really nice which it usually isn't.

Some of the descriptions of tools on Craig's List are truly amazing. Like "desirable patina" which really means covered in rust from years of sitting in the back of a truck, or the rare custom/expertly/professionally modified tool that has been bent, cut or welded on.

^those may be a good deal once you see what’s in the box.

As mentioned, I love the loaded boxes listed for thousands that say everything Snap On or mostly Snap On, etc., and the first thing I see are Craftsman RP ratchets or worse, $1 Chinese no name ratchets, a pile of pliers of all different old makes, etc..

I have seen it all and then some...Then I take a few seconds and send a few of them a pm, explaining that their price is so far out in left field it is not funny but never a reply back.

Some people get it and some never will get it, and those that never get it, when they die they are put six feet under ground and their Family sells it for next to nothing...

Seeing more estate sale tools boxes full of tools. The majority are common homeowner brands. For Snap On stuff some sellers try to get current list price.

Gotta love it when they want multi-thousands of dollars for their tools but won't take the time to describe/list any of the contents other then to mention it's “all snap-on, mac, and Craftsman”.

Then the listing only has one or two pics of the outside of the toolbox.

Survival bias.

Most of the tool listings you see on CL are garbage, junk, and/or hilariously overpriced because those are the listings that haven't been taken down by a seller who successfully sold their item(s).

All legitimately good deal listings are gone within a couple days.

ftfy. Can't tell you how many decent deals I've happened upon posted in the morning and I send an email around lunch time and the item is already gone...

If the local craigslist tool boxes posted has "thousands in tools", I have millions. It's odd to see a KRL double listed for $1000 MORE than I paid for my triple. My killer is selection; very few classic red boxes in my area. The guys with reasonable/sane pricing are on orange/lime green/flat black boxes. Don't any of the guys needing to get out from under a payment buy red?!?

There's a "street legal mud truck" for sale on my local CL - A 2 door ford explorer. I watched 3k or so come off that price over the last few years, and I STILL think they want to much for that rotted explorer.

That middle one takes the cake. I think he held down the 0 key one too many times.

The cart listing cracks me up. Again, extra 0 and no pics of supposed tools.

I especially like when the seller tells any and all prospective buyers how good the price is and that "it will sell quickly," as you see it get reposted and reposted for days and weeks on end. Case in point, I keep seeing a pedal boat pop up on the local fb classifieds. They want $350 and "proce is firm, it will sell quick."
It's been getting reposted every day for 2 weeks. I mainly noticed bc I almost bought the same model last month that was listed for $60 and sold in a few hours on the same page. Different color so it's not someone flipping the exact same unit, but still...

The biggest trend I see right now with the tools I have listed on Craigslist, is that nobody who says they are interested and sets up a time to meet EVER actually show up. Happened to me several times this week

Since we're piling on ... $20K for a random collection of stuff.

I like how half of the sockets are missing. Contrast this with mrtoolfool's Hansen tray thread:
