There are lots of idiots who think other people are idiots. Too many listings at prices that are too close to the cost of new.

They always claim the list price, but I've never known anyone who paid anywhere near list price.

This.

It's like jewelry that's perperhally 50% off then someone tries to sell it used for more than they paid and claim a savings of 40%

well, some of my favorite stories off CL:

1. Set of vintage car tools (posted on GJ before trying to get idea which car it belonged to: some of the things from the guy (well, could not sell it a year ago... No, they are not in my house, but I will call you after I get to my garage on the weekend... after a week when I called back: I thought you were not interested (yep, that's why I asked for more info and planned to meet)... eventually gave up on him

2. Guy from Ware MA selling SO socket set with really ****** pictures:
- could not explain me what sizes and what drives. After I asked him for either more pictures or description if there are owners initials or scratches got something along the lines " they are scratched because they are from estate sale (was going to Western Mass for the weekend, asked the drive for more info as they were extra 30 minutes away... Still had them for sale 2 weeks later...

3. Old box missing a front cover: owner raised price on the ad from 40 to someting (do not remember) to 70. When I asked him about additional details and told him that his initial price was 40, he denied it (despite earlier e-mail in the e-mail list confirming it...)

4. Guy 2 hours away really wanting to sell his box, but - pictures were crappy, he "did not have a good phone to make any other pictures", could not meet anywhere outside of his house as his car was reposessed... Cool box, but had to give up on it as sounded funny...

I also put some extra staff on the CL sometimes.
My favorites:
... Is it still available? (and then disappearing forever)
... Can I get your phone number? (after couple of stood ups, I explain that I only text people once I get there number first) - a lot of people just disappear...
... Can you give me a better price? (I offer a lower price and ask if they want it to never hear from them)
There seem to be 2 type of buyers: ones who know what they want (I tend to sell things pretty cheap when I do since I usually find good deals and am just returning my money on things I do not want anymore) and the ones who e-mail you for their entertainment...

It has basically turned into free ebay. Lots and lots of auction resellers. Majority of them very ignorant to what they have or true value. Good deals are gone very fast sometimes to show up a few days later at a higher price.

https://dayton.craigslist.org/tls/d/snap-on-tool-box-tool-chest/6633333008.html ot sure if its worth the price....I seen the guy buy it at a auction....it also had two side boxes and a side shelf which I think he sold.....he was asking 150 i think for both cabinets and 50 for the shelf.....and I think originally askung 450 for the top and bottom box which he has been trying to sell since December ....at the auction he paid 165 for everything

Yep, been looking at that for months, keeps droping price and it's always "firm". Snow in the pics, take a hint bud. Looks like a hoarders / resellers place from the pics in the background.

Meeting an honest, intelligent seller or buyer has become far from the norm. REALLY makes you appreciate when you do.

Used prices approach the price for new tools. The listings continue on... with tools unsold. If something is priced to move, it moves quickly.

aint that the truth... contacted a guy within a couple hours of a posting going up who had a Dake arbor press for $30... it was already sold

don't even get me started on the guy who posted a KRL box on facebook for $500

some of my favorite things i see often on CL, FB, etc

listing that is somewhat vague in the text about what exactly they have for sale and NO PICTURES

using a stock photo for a used item and uses excuses or outright refuses to send photos of the item when you ask

this amazing photo https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/109460489899869/

cobbled together frankenbullshit like this https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/189832198375672/

I contacted a guy a few years ago who was gutting a house and listed some items he found in the basement. It was lunch time when I saw the ad he had just posted for a cabinet makers bench top for $50. The pictures were crappy but I recognized what it was and called him immediately. Since he was at the house I drove over there (it was minutes from where I work) and paid him cash. He said that in the 5 minutes it took me to drive there he got three more calls on it. It was covered with mildew and **** from being stored in a basement for decades, but cleaned up beautifully. I regularly see ads posted for them for thousands of dollars around here now, and the ones I see generally aren't in as good a condition as this one is.

I sold 3 smaller Craftsman tool boxes and one 42" wide top friction slide box about a year ago....all for $100. The small, 2-drawer basic starter box, a couple of 5-drawer bench top boxes and the roller top box.

The idiots that bought it thought they got a steal. I see them trying to re-sell all of them on FB marketplace about 3 weeks later. Had the 42" box listed for $125, the two benchtop boxes for $65 each and the small one for $25.

I saw them drop the prices, never saw them posted as sold, but they got down to about what it cost them in total.

What they don't know is I tried to sell them for 4 weeks on FB marketplace individually like that for less than what they were listing and got tired of sitting on them. I wanted the space.... So I listed them all together for a price that SOLD.

Many of the CL ads are posted by people who have no idea about tools or the values. But that does not present any problem for them; Their Uncle Satchelass is the ultimate source for information. If He is not available; it is a no-brainer to check the prices of similar looking tools in CL ads.
It is with good reason They get pissed when some sleazeball tries to tell them the tools are worth less..

A trend I've seen a few times recently on CL is people posting used **** asking way too much and trying to justify it by including a pic of similar **** from ebay and the even more outrageous price from there. It's a trend that I expect I'll start to see more of as there seem to be more idiots every day.

I have yet to buy something on Craigslist except a small smoker. Tools are ridiculously high here. Well, higher than I'm remotely willing to pay for.

Tools are the one thing that has taken some time to sell on CL. I've sold a car, a pool, furniture, stereo gear, baseball equipment and stuff my son left behind and didn't want. It all sold relatively quick. The tools took a while.

The FB garage sale sites are just as frustrating. We listed an $80 microwave for $10. Like new. First 4 people wanted it REAL bad but didn't show up. Others want the stuff delivered....really

FB, OfferUp, LetGo all just thick with pawn shops. So much those guys should be paying percentages to those sites. At least CL is moderated by the users so if enough of us flagged those ******** ads they'd be gone. I've heard people getting some deals on the new selling websites but all I've seen is overpriced. And I don't do pawn shops so it's just about all CL for me. Enjoy it while it lasts.
