Hi all,

Long time lurker. I've wanted my own garage since I was 12 years old. Fast forward 15 years and I'm finally able to build my dream garage for the purpose of storing and rebuilding my BMW collection.

Some shots of the land and work which has started.

Look at the size of this tree root which was pulled out [emoji15]

More to follow as work progresses.

It'll be a workshop also. So normally two cars in the garage when I'm doing my resto work. Once all cars are fully restored (4+ years) then it'll be used as storage for 3 cars.

Yes due to the size I needed to get planning permission and also approval via building regulations (basically the local council make sure the work is done up to a safe standard)

That fence has a lot of character! :) I love it.

The shed design looks nice, look forward to seeing it progress

Thanks it's been a dream of mine since I was a kid. Nothing as extravagant as the stuff you guys abroad but I have some cool ideas which I hope will make it stand out.

Nice. That is about the same size I am building with the same door configuration, double offset to one side with a man door on the front. I have the slab done so far and found I could park 3 side by side if I needed to but it's tight and required some parallel parking back and forth with the end cars to get them in, not something you would want to do daily but ok for storage. Normally I will only store 2 but in big snowstorms I will put 3 in.

Sounds like you have the same idea as me. I can imagine it would be a nightmare doing it daily. But that's not my intention. In any case if I need to store 3 cars I'll likely get skates.

I have a couple of sets and they get used all the time. Especially when I have a body and frame separated. If you have a paved apron you can roll one or the other outside while you are working and that really frees up space.

Is your building site behind your house? Looks like an ample piece of property. I hate tree stumps. It is good you found it when you had the right kind of equipment on hand.

Looking forward to seeing progress pictures. We like pictures.

Well for the time being my other two cars will be at a friends garage. And two will be in my garage.

Yup garage will be behind the house. Stump was a pain took around 3 hours to get out with the digger.

Foundations will be dug hopefully on Monday so will have some pictures for you then. [emoji106]

Work has begun on digging the foundations. They need to be 900mm deep and then before the concrete can be laid it needs to be inspected by the council.

Inspection by the council is tomorrow and then we can pour the concrete in. [emoji2]

Today the strip foundation was layed. Now that this is done the real work can begin next week. I was told the cement will set in 24 hours but best practice to leave it a few days so works out nicely for next week. [emoji2]

Hey the garage looks like it's going to be great. I'm based down in Devon and hoping to complete on a new house at the end of this month. Sadly it's not got a garage, but there is plenty of space for an almost triple so I'll be watching with interest. I guess your going for a cavity wall and insulating it? Will you have access to the roof void for storage?

Thanks Padi. Yes cavity wall with insulation. Yup that's the plan to make atleast half of the roof for storage.

Sounds like a nice project. Never been a big fan of the GSA but I appreciate the engineering. Sold my 950 Adventure last year. Looking to get something next year leaning towards a 990 SMT as I'm not doing much off roading these days.

I'll be honest, I haven't had it off road, although I'd love to have a go on someone else's off-road! Just in case I drop it and all that. It does however work very well as a mile muncher!

Well I hope the garage comes along ok, I can't wait to get mine underway. Hopefully we should be able to start in November. Thankfully the current owners had planned to build the garage so the concrete drive already has the footings built for the garage! I'm. Hoping they will be man enough for what I want. Can I ask why you didn't run the roof square to the outer walls?
Cheers Chris.

I have a garage built similar size and construction to your plan above. On the advice of my builder, he built "piers" I think they were called, half way along the inner skin on each wall. This was just one column of conc blocks built on their flat so I creates a kind of pillar that sticks into the room about 5 inches (9" block minus 4" wall) and provides a little more rigidity for the wall. You don't them in houses too often because they have room dividing walls that provide the strength. Might be worth asking your builder.
Also, I built my walls about 8ft high same as yours and my roll up door is 7ft high. I really wish I'd went even one foot higher for handling sheet wood or maybe parking high vans or a boat.
Just a few thoughts I had, that's all. Hope it goes well for you.

Thanks for the advice. From what I understand as its a cavity wall, the inner and outer walls are tied together so creating that strength required. If it was a single skin wall then pillars for strength would definitely be advised. That's my understanding someone with more knowledge can correct me if I'm wrong [emoji16]

Hi,

Very interested in this one as it's in the NW like me and very close to the boundaries.
Can I please ask, your planning authority that covers this ?

Did you want to go for brick or what that choice made for you by planning?
I'm looking at metal units like many of the US guys do because you get so much clearance and thus can fit a lift in easily. Insulation on the wall and ceiling no problem.
My plot is odd shaped, so I'm on the boundary in three places, but it tapers away so the front is around 2m away.

Planning shouldn't be a problem as long as the garage doesn't block any of your neighbours light etc.

Not sure what you mean by metal units? Due to the size the best solution was brick. I looked at prefab units but it wasn't working out significantly cheaper and they are know to have issues especially the roofs on them.
