Hi all, I need some info. I'm about to begin building a 28'x28' garage and i want as much usable space above as possible. I'm torn between a gambrel style roof and "room built-in" trusses. What's the most floor space available from a 28' truss?

Do you have a maximum height restriction?
Do you have a restriction as to roof pitch?

One example of a 28' storage truss w/a 12/12 pitch is

Remember, that if YOU are building this, a 12 and 12 pitch roof is a bear to shingle/roof, plus setting those trusses will all but require a crane.

Yeah I guess there are no real restrictions...I will be doing a majority of the roofing so maybe 6/12 - 9/12 on the pitch and again no height restrictions per se, but I'm trying to avoid building an actual second story.

What will your roof covering be? 6:12 is more then enough for most types of roofing.

9/12 is steep - not as much as 12/12 obviously though.

Maximum storage would be a gambrel roof. However, depending on the loading for the floor, you may have to go with wooden I-joist or parallel cord trusses for joist.

My buddy store hay "upstairs" in his barn. A whole lot of parallel cord trusses 16" O.C. Fresh cut hay (not 100% dry) is no problem !

12/12 pitch can be a positive if you live in snow country, and besides the extra floor space I like the look of a steep roof. They can be a pain to cover, but you generally only do it every 25-30 yrs. If you have the right equipment it really isn't bad. Metal roofing (which is all I use up here) goes up very quickly. The MOST space available is a mansard roof/wall with a flat roof truss, creating an entire second floor.

Or just build a two story garage with a flat roof.
