I have one out there. It's used as a hang out area a lot but I always have some sort of games or races on when I am out there. Also use it to stream music or videos. I have a pieced together stereo system I have had since college.

My TV is on for pretty much sports only. Football, golf, drag racing or baseball typically. I' don't sit on my stool and watch, it's just there for background noise to keep me company. If I hear the announcer holler to the 40, 30, 20, 10, touchdown.....I will usually stop and look. If it is ever too distracting for something that I might be doing (I cant imagine), I can just turn it off. Just my 2 cents, Robert

I'll add my vote for no TV in the shop. I just don't need one nor do I have the wall space to accommodate one. I do have a stereo I listen to the game or some blues on. I also have a tablet I can connect to the stereo for on line streaming and to use for watching videos or searching for parts. I really couldn't be bothered putting in a TV even if it were free. I spend most of my time in there working.

There have been days when I have done nothing but watch TV in the garage. It's just a different atmosphere I guess. A place to get away to and to relax

I think it all depends on whether your shop is set up to hang out in or not. If it is set up to hang out in (heat, AC, sofa, refrigerator, toys) then a TV makes all the sense in the world. Otherwise I'd think it would be a waste of space.

Personally, I've got a 60" and am looking for a deal on an 80".

Well we have a room above the garage my wife calls my apartment. That's where we gather during family parties and where I go to watch football. So if I didn't have that then maybe I would want one in my shop.

I have an old tv in the shop but I don't use it because I wouldn't be able to see it past all the clutter. If I had Extra cash I'd buy and mount a large flatscreen high up on the wall.

I run the radio 24/7. I hear it's good for keeping the critters away. I turn it up when I'm working.

Don't have a tv yet but I have the mounting bracket, the outlet and cable feed is all ready. Just background noise with the History channel, HGTV, Amer. Pickers, restoration shows, etc.

I like having a tv out there. It’s just an old 19" crt tv that needs an antenna, but i get good reception & ~15 local channels. A small tv is great - they don't take up much room & you can mount them on a shelf to keep them out of the way.

on a sidenote, I was walking around the hood a few nights ago & saw a garage with literally 7 different flat-screen tv's of all sizes taking up all the real-estate on the back wall; each one had a different football game on. Garage looked immaculate. No jacks/tool chests/tools to be found & spotless white paint on the walls. One dude was sitting in there looking lonely. He spent gobs of money on tv's, cable service, wiring for CATV outlets, etc.

otoh, he's probably on some AV message board stating that he walked by my house & saw dirty-looking loser working a messy garage with a 19" CRT tv sitting on a shelf.

I have a small TV in the shop hooked up to Directv. Usually just listen to music but sometimes a race. DVD player also hooked up in case I need to watch some video instruction.

When the extended family comes over, the guys naturally congregate in the garage and we put a game on. I don't allow smoking in the house, so the lone smoker has a choice of the garage or outside. I just have to remember to put the coffee can of old carb cleaner away so he doesn't flick an ash into it. I never have the TV on when I'm working out there, just some music on my old college stereo.

I put a cheap flat screen up with an ipod under it. It has about 1500 songs that were transferred from my old LP records. I wouldn't waste a cable box out there but with Roku I can stream Pandora for additional music and other apps such as Amazon.

I'd install it on a swivel wall mount (Monoprice has them cheap). Is it a flat panel? Might be cool to have if you are the type that looks at YouTube videos for help when tearing a machine down to repair it. Or to throw on some This Old House or Fast N' Loud. Could even use it to play Pandora streaming radio if you don't have a radio out there. There's usually a mode to turn off the picture. Just plug in a Chromecast into it.

I've found that having a TV on in the background can be good for when you're doing monotonous work such as cleaning or organizing - things that don't require a ton of mental focus. The key is to find a channel with something that's not interesting enough to distract you from what you're trying to do. I've found that daytime talk shows, nature shows or news channels work well for that because they don't have a plot or story to get drawn into. It's just enough to keep your mind occupied while you're doing grunt work so you don't get bored.

In my family we joke about how on my father's side of the family there is a TV in every room of the house and at least one turned on all day long. My grandparents did this and my father does it after work and during the weekends. He has a man cave in the walkout basement/garage of his house and I swear, he leaves the TV on all weekend long. He's in and out of there multiple times a day while he's working around the house so he just leaves it on all day. He has a computer down there too, so every hour or two he'll take a break and go into the basement to sit down, have a cold drink, check his email, check the sports scores and watch a few minutes of whatever game is on TV.

I've got a 48" in the garage.. But had to buy a 50" for the house first so the better half wouldn't complain !
It was part of my build budget and I'm looking forward to having a Daytona 500 party this winter.

As my shop gets closer to done, I'm planning a good sized flat panel, with my cable subscription that is too expensive, and a small computer for looking stuff up.

Distraction? Maybe. But a quiet shop is creepy IMO. Besides if I'm doing something that takes that much attention, the noise of the machine or tool alone drowns out any TV noise..

I love my shop. Got a 40" flatscreen on the wall, jammin' stereo, fridge, microwave, gas furnace, and a computer with a bigger monitor than the one in the house. Most everything I post on GJ, is from my shop computer.

Think of it as a living room with tools.

My wife has a 55 inch plasma in the attached garage but no car work is done there.

My back garage doesn't have one and I never turn the radio on. I like it quiet after spending 40 years in an industrial environment.

I have always had a TV out in the Garage. I like to have it on while I am working. I also have a cast off computer and a cast off stereo. Any time something in the house gets upgraded....The Garage gets the benefit.

I'm planning to put one in directly in line with the 4-post lift in my new shop, and wire a camera to it so I can see the car, ramps, and posts while driving in. Should make lining up on it a breeze.

Might as well serve a practical purpose beyond just noise!

Having a TV or monitor in the garage is great for scaling up fiber optic scope images. No use in looking at a tiny screen when you can see what is going on with a big high resolution one!

The good thing about most tvs is that they have a new feature called an on-off button. This allows you to ensure its not a distraction when you're doing a job where concentration is required. Those other times however, you have the option of having it on. Best of both worlds.

Mine has this hand held thing that has an on and off button. If I'm in the mood to work, I work. If I'm in the mood to be distracted, and I'm doing some mundane task like cleaning the shop, I turn on the TV. Sometimes it's just background white noise. Ah, Playwme beat me to it. My work bench is getting a computer area, too.

Might be cool to have if you are the type that looks at YouTube videos for help when tearing a machine down to repair it. Or to throw on some This Old House or Fast N' Loud.

When Rebuilding my 55 Chevy I have been stuck a few times needing to look up how to get a part off or back on (if I forgot where I took it off from) Getting the manual covered in grime and oil ***** but a $5-$10 Keyboard doesn't mind a wipe-down so I use an old laptop for the digital manual, YouTube etc when working on my projects... Hooking it up to a TV just lets me see it better!

My daughter gave me a 20 inch TV w/HD TV antenna for my work shop. She said it would be nice to have a TV in the shop. The only thing I can imagine is having it on during a snow storm or a football.

I think it might be a distraction.

Any opinions??

You used the words "work shop" to describe where you are thinking about putting a TV. If you are talking about a place where you do woodworking or a place where a lot of sawdust or dusty particles might get inside the TV then I would say, no.

But in a garage where there is less dust in the air, then I think it's a great idea. I watch the races in mine all the time.

I prefer a TV for sure. Background noise is always good for me anyway. If you really need to concentrate you can always mute it or turn it off. And +1 for having a get away

I prefer music but will watch football, racing or car/fishing shows while doing simple tasks.

Has anyone actually had a TV fail in a garage/workshop environment? I think anyone who is concerned about damaging a TV in their garage would be surprised at how durable they really are.

The reason I say this is because at work, we have flat screen computer monitors attached to weld carts to run Miller's Centerpoint software. In the 3+ years I've been working on this project, I have had only one monitor fail, and I chalk that up to manufacturer defect because it happened in the first few days it was on the floor. The guys are not easy on them either - these computer monitors are right in the weld cell getting caked in carbon grind dust 20 hours a day.

We do not put any protective devices on them either because we figured that it was cheaper just to replace a monitor than to try and protect it. These are also not fancy, high end industrial monitors, they are usually the cheapest no-name brand ones the IT department can find when they need to place an order. Half of them are used from when they give someone in the office a newer model.

I don't have one in the garage but a few years ago I bought a 12.5x20 building and put it at the end of the driveway
I make powder horns, shooting bags, what ever I need for portraying a Revolutionary War era Rifleman.
This building slowly morphed into my man cave
First the coffee pot & Radio, Then A/C, Then wireless computer, Then fully networked computer, Then 32 inch LED TV, and finally ran cable and put a cable box in

I don't have a TV in the garage and have no desire for that to change. I do have a nice stereo though. My den/music room is adjacent to the garage so I can just put a record on and leave the door open for tunes. I mostly work in silence as it allows me to concentrate on my what I'm doing, but occasionally listen to music to pump me up/chill me out during tasks that are particularly monotonous or physical. Lately, for example, when I have been working on my Hammond restoration project, I've been listening to organ music while working on my Hammond organ restoration project. It really helps keep me in the mood to work when I'm doing a lot of sanding or whatever, when I hear a good organ solo.
