We moved into a new house last winter and have been slowly improving the two garages. We have an attached 20x20 two car and an attached one car.

We started with the larger two car this past summer with a lot of ideas from users here, so many of the elements may look familiar. Since the weather is pretty bad outside today (thanks to Tropical Storm Sandy) I spent the day organizing and editing the photos of our progress.

Here is what it looked like at the beginning of the summer;

We started by moving everything out and into the one car garage;

Took one long day to get the whole garage painted with primer, with a little help from the dog;

We selected a dark gray semi-gloss for the bottom of the wall and a lighter gray for the top. We taped off the line with blue painters tape and used the one strip for both the top and bottom;

Here's how it looked after finishing the painting;

After painting over the primer white stripe with a white semi-gloss, we added a one inch black vinyl stripe and a three inch blue vinyl stripe;

We really liked 55cadillacking's http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=147886&highlight=rick%27s+garage floor and decided to do something similar.

Shortly after placing our order with Shauna, we received our flooring;

Started laying down the floor that same night;

Added a simple closet maid shelf for all the car detailing supplies

And finally re-installed the camera in the garage;

Forgot to put this photo in yesterday, the one car garage after emptying the two car;

It stayed like that for a few months, much to the displeasure of my wife who had to park outdoors during that time. We finally cleared it out last weekend, just in time to get her car back inside before tropical storm Sandy.

Here's the layout of the two garages, perpendicular to each other.

Looks spectacular. I love your double windows. They give your garage the feel of a living room! The floor is fantastic. The organization around your sink area was impressive, as is the overall paint scheme. So much to like. Sweet S4, too. I think we have a lot in common! Looking forward to seeing where you go with things in the future. Sky's the limit!

Same scheme for the 1-car?

Thank you. We are really happy with the way it turned out, especially after looking back at the before photos. Still have a long way to go but we are slowly getting there.

Definitely like the windows, even though they take up some valuable wall space the trade off in lighting and air flow is worth it.

Still trying to decide on the specifics for the one car, probably similar but I think we are going to leave it until the spring. I posted a photo of the one car along with part of the floor plans showing how the two garages are situated but that post is still trapped in the admin reviewer spam filter.

Let me ask you, how do you like the split double and single set up? I see a lot of new homes experimenting with separate garages. I've always been partial to having all my cars in one space. Interested to hear your thoughts/opinions.

Those windows do creep down kind of low, but I think you have more than enough wall space on the other two walls. One of these would look pretty decent between them:

We are living in a new neighborhood and almost all the new houses in the area also have the split garages. So far we are enjoying the split garages, no real disadvantage in our eyes. The one car is really just that, enough for one car. We use both to park our cars while many our neighbors don't. They use the larger garage for one car while the other is the storage area with their second cars left in the driveway. I always park the Audi in the larger garage while the wife always uses the one car. Both enter into the same room of the house, so it isn't much of a difference for access to the house. It does make it easier to wash one car without worrying about accidentally spraying the other.

I agree, there is still plenty of wall space in the garage with the windows, just have to do a little more planning to maximize the space. That Mac Tool box would look perfect there! I'll have to add it to my x-mas list.

is the water heater electric? if yes why is it up on a platform?

Yes, it's electric. I am not sure the exact reason for the platform other then elevating it for access to the drain on the bottom. Maybe someone on here with a little more construction or plumbing knowledge could provide a better reasoning. I never really thought about it, just the way they do it around here.

They used the metal platform for ours but other houses in the neighborhood have a raised concrete block platform for theirs. I think i would have preferred the concrete solid platform but the metal one I have does allow for limited storage below it.

I asked around about this, having never really thought about it, and found out it is part of the building code. Not sure of the specifics but basically the code requires water heaters , whether gas or electric, to be raised at least 18 inches above the ground in garages or areas that may contain flammable liquids. I image, like most regulations, is based on someone's bad experience or stupidity causing an accident.

I'm as bright as I look in the picture above.
Nice car. I also like the idea of the "detailng rack" cleaned up, out of the way, yet easy to get to whenever you need it.

I was wondering where all the lawn equipment went from the first pictures to the last, didn't know there was a second garage. FWIW I put up a small shed for all that stuff. It was the best 96 sqft "addition"

X...

Thank you.

Definitely looking to get all the lawn equipment out of the garage and into a shed. That would free up a lot of space in the garage(s) and keep a lot of dirt out of that area. Hopefully this spring I'll be able to put in an addition to the backyard.

Here are a few updated photos from this afternoon. Since the last photos, I've added cabinets, hung three bikes in the back corner and a large white board near the door into the house. This spring, all of the lawn stuff along with everything else near the windows will be gone or moved into a storage shed in the backyard.

Still have a ton of things I want to do in there, just need to find the time to get it done.

Nice garage and car. I like the colors you have gone with. I too am in J-ville.
I see you have a bunch of bicycles too. I ride road and mtn bikes around here. Wonder if we have ridden together before. I work on New River and ride NRT when it's open. Hendo is a great new trail on Lejeune.

Thank you for the compliments on the colors. The wife and i discussed the color choices for a few months before finally selecting those. We had a few others in mind, but those seemed to best match the exterior of the house and our plans for the garage.

Unfortunately I haven't had much time for the bikes since moving to the area back in March. Hopefully this spring I'll be able to check out some of those trails .

Thank you. Yeaup, while I enjoy looking at all those super garage/workshops on here, the two cars draw most of my attention for the same reason.

exactly, because they are what most "common folk" have. I love to see different peoples work.

Double garage owners unite! The VAST majority of garages in my city are front-drive doubles and the VAST majority of them look awful! There's about 10 or 12 doubles on here that I follow very closely. This is one of them.

I do the same. I'm interested in the double garages not the huge unit size ones often shown. I'm actually trying to down size(probably against forum rules.LOL) I'm actually more than halfing my current combined garages overall floor area, down to a 20x20 attached and a detached double I'm going to build (24x24). So I can have everything at one location. I joined here looking for ideas from others for best use of space and layout, look.

Anyway back on topic. Thank you for taking the time to post this thread its very much appreciate. I'm really liking the colour combo and the flooring.

Same thing around here. Virtually every house has a two car garage and most of the newer ones (like mine) are being constructed with a two car and an additional one car. Despite all that space, most of them are a complete mess without even room to park one car inside any of the garages. Not sure of the logic with that, especially this time of the year when the cars are frequently covered with frost in the morning.

Thank you for the compliments. Nothing wrong with downsizing, but that certainly isn't the direction of 99% of the GJ users. Sounds like a good plan to have everything in one location, nothing worse that making frequent trips between two different places trying to gather the necessary equipment for a task.

Slow and steady wins the race. You don't want to rush something that you'll probably have in your garage for decades. The blue looks really good on it. Let us know when you get to the next phase!

Yeaup, thanks for the encouragement. I'll definitely post up some photos once this project is completed.

I happy with the way the blue face frame is turning out. I used the vinyl tape from the stripe on my wall to wrap the wood. The pieces on there right now are a test run. Turned out pretty good, just a few wrinkles on the first attempt. Once I have all the wood needed for the face frame, I will re-wrap all the pieces and ensure there are no wrinkles or gaps.

Looks great, You are about thirty miles from my old hometown of Kinston. As for the question about the water heater being raised, in NC it is for two reasons, one is that cement/concrete flooring is water permeable and metal on concrete will allow quicker rusting of metal. The other reason is that it makes it easier to do a yearly drain of the tank for sediment removal.
