Looks great!

Thank you.

Looks great, You are about thirty miles from my old hometown of Kinston. As for the question about the water heater being raised, in NC it is for two reasons, one is that cement/concrete flooring is water permeable and metal on concrete will allow quicker rusting of metal. The other reason is that it makes it easier to do a yearly drain of the tank for sediment removal.

Thank you. Good info on the water heater, thanks. That also reminds me that I need to do that yearly draining of the tank soon.

Big fan of your garage. Love love love your flooring. I'm already subscribed - so keep up the good work...and the posts!

Thank you. We are very happy with the floor as well. I played with the race deck website for a long time and had a ton of different designs set up but eventually pulled the trigger on a design similar to what several others on here have used (like Rick "55cadillacking"'s floor)/ I just need to find some time to get back out there and finish up the new work bench. Hopefully this spring/summer, I will have a storage shed in the back yard and will finally be able to get the mower and all the yard maintenance stuff out of the garage.

Unfortunately I've had a few other projects and jobs preventing me from making much progress on the garage but I do have a few updates;

Added a "window topper" shelf above the double window for some additional storage.

View media item 29417
It's painted the same dark gray as the lower portion of the wall and has added a bit of storage.

In order to add some additional storage space, I scored two gym wall lockers from an auction. Both are in decent but well used condition, with three doors each and an internal shelf on the top third;

Hopefully I will find time this weekend to beat some of the bigger dents out of them and paint them gray to better fit the garage. I've been debating where to place them and have tentatively decided to place them between the windows. The only issue I may have is each one is 36 inches wide and there is only 65 inches between the window trim. If I overlap the trim, I will still have about an inch that will overhang the window, so I will have to test fit them to see if this will work. The other possible location for one or both lockers are in the other single car garage. They will fit but that would defeat the plan to use at least two of the lockers as storage for the bike related items (helmets, shoes, gloves, etc) near the bikes.

Great spot for storage above the window. Smart to take advantage of those types of spots as they are key to swallow up some 'useless' stuff that is just getting in the way elsewhere.

Here's the layout of the two garages, perpendicular to each other.

I wish more builders would give a little more space in the garages. So many of them are making you cram into less than 20x20 these days. :dunno:

Looking good. Putting the yard stuff in the shed will really free up some space. And I second what Dubber said about the window topper, great way to keep the floors clear.

Absolutely! I wasn't so sure about putting a shelf there but once I did, it filled up quickly with miscellaneous stuff. I really like all the light from the windows, but they do take up precious wall space and that shelf helps to minimize the impact

Seems to be pretty common in this area with all the new construction. I agree, they should have at least built for the full 20x20 if not more. It seems like the give just enough to label and list it as a two car garage. We saw the floor plans before deciding on this house and made sure the optional one car was built, which should be more than enough space for our needs.

We've been shopping around and reviewing our options for a shed in the yard and hope to have it up in the next few months. I pulled most of the yard stuff out yesterday to put the lockers in and realized just how much space that stuff is taking. Can't wait to get it out of there.

I was able to get most of the dents and rust off of the gym lockers yesterday and finished them with a few coats of spray paint. Considering the total cost for the two lockers and paint was less than $80, I am pleased with how they turned out. Now I just need to decide what to store in them.

10x better, well done. I really like that shot.

Thank you. I really like that view too, without the lawn mower and cart in the way. Unfortunately, I had to roll them both back in right after taking that photo. Definitely motivation to get that shed and move that stuff out permanently.

Hahaha yea i hear you. I often move my garbage can out of the way for a shot and anything else i'm moving temporarily it gives me a moment of "does this need to be here or is there a better spot?" I'm not sure what it is but that shot is just a great mix of win; it portrays a motorsport enthusiast with the S4 that can properly call that home.

Your garage looks very nice. The S4 is a special car. Audi/VW fan.

Did you apply the joint compound to the ceiling yourself? If so, did you use scaffolding or apply it from a ladder?

The builder only applied compound then seated the joint tape. I need to finish the job. I have done drywall finish work many times, but I have never done a ceiling. I don't think that it's going to be any fun.

Definitely value added by moving stuff out, even temporary, like you said. Thank you, glad to hear my garage is shaping up to be worthy of having the S4 parked in it. Still have a lot of things I would like to do like maybe adding a little red coloring or striping in the garage (kinda like Rick's) in order to match the red coloring on the S4 logo.

Luckily the builder did all the dry wall work for the walls and ceiling of the garage. They didn't paint any of it, and applying the paint was more than enough ceiling work for me. Sorry to hear you'll be finishing out your own ceiling, best of luck and take your time doing it right so it's a one time event.

absolutely love it!

Thank you.

If you get a chance, whip over to my thread and check out the photos posted today by OllieCampbell of the Audi dealership in his town. I would LOVE to see you do something similar to the RS stripe. Stunning.

Those stripes look great. Thank you and OllieCampbell for the inspiration, now I just need to find the time and put together a plan to recreate something like that in my garage.

I haven't had much time for improvements to the garage during the past few weeks but finally got around to starting one this morning. I recently purchased a tire storage rack (similar to this one - http://www.hyloft.com/heavy-duty-adjustable-tire-loft/ ) in order to get these up and out of the way.

View media item 30177
I've spent quite a bit of time trying to figure the best place for them and finally decided to shift the bikes to the back wall and place the tire rack above them. The current location for the bikes worked ok, but having three bikes in that small space made for a tight fit.

View media item 30178
I thought the installation of the tire rack would be a quick project but have ran into an issue. The tire rack is pre-drilled and set up to be mounted on studs 16 inches on center but the studs in my garage are 24 inches on center. I dug through the old photos of the construction and this is the only one that clearly shows the back wall of the garage.

View media item 30179
I still haven't exactly figured out a solution to this problem but think the best way may be to mount a 3/4 sheet of plywood, the height and width of the rack, to the studs as additional support. I would then mount the tire rack through the plywood to the studs and use the plywood to add additional support to the pre-drilled mounting locations. This would give me three lag screws supporting the tire rack directly into the studs and the remaining four pre-drilled holes would be lag screwed to the plywood.

Has anyone ran into a similar problem? Any other ideas or opinions on my plan to use the plywood as additional support?

Good idea with the bike placement out of the way and having the tires above. I think your current thought regarding mounting an extra piece of wood to the studs and then the rack to that piece seems to be a good bet.

Yup, that works! haha. Those racks make me super paranoid, although i do plan on getting one for my next place with a higher ceiling. I think its smart that you took your time and did it right, last thing you want is to come out and have a wheel indent on the hood of your S4.

I'm quite used to projects throwing me left hooks, so I can sympathize with your frustration. What should have been an easy job required some extra effort, but you will love having your wheels so close at hand, but up and out of the way.

I've only had one close call with tires up high. I was taking them down by myself, and I lost my grip and it barely clipped the front end of my car. I put a little scuff in the 3M film on the passenger side fender. Hard to see. Apart from that, I don't have any concerns about having them up there. If they were going to come down, they would have by now!

What's next?

With the Bike rack underneath it looks profesionaly made. Nicely done.

Thank you, I am pretty happy with how it turned out.

I'll also admit to being paranoid about those racks. But after putting this one up, I am confident that it will safely hold. However, I did double check that nothing was coming undone this morning. At least the rack is off to the corner of the garage so none of the tires falling would directly impact the car.

I took a few hours to clamp everything up and pre-drill holes which was time well spent. Once I started installing everything it went smoothly and all my screws hit their intended studs.

What's next?

After hoisting the tires up and down into the rack a few times, yesterday to adjust the rack, I know the feeling of loosing grip with them. The tire covers seem to help with maneuvering them around and luckily I will only have to pull them out a couple times per year.

As for what's next, definitely the lighting. I am still researching a shed for the yard tools and brainstorming ideas for a new workbench, but the lighting situation has been bugging me for a long time. I currently have two of these;

and the garage door opener bulb as the only source of lighting. While the windows help on those sunny days, it's time for those lights to go. I have been shopping around for lights but have yet to decide on the best option for my garage.

I plan on building a workbench similar to your wooden one. I was curious how you attached the vertical 2x4s legs to one another. Glue & screws? Would you make any changes to the workbench plans?

I like the color combination throughout the garage. Very clean look .

Thank you, the color combination is a take off some of the garages on here that I've been inspired by.

As for the bench, it's all held together by screws. I built the bench in the photo along with it's twin almost ten years ago and both have held up perfectly. Other than a few stains from oild and paint, they look and function just the same as the day I built them. The only thing that I would change is to make the bottom shelf wider by placing the supporting 2x4s on the outside of the legs vice inside. Having them inside makes it easier to pull a stool up to but I don't sit at them and would prefer the wider shelf for more storage.

I concur, that light simply won't do, I'm surprised you've lasted so long with just that. Any thoughts on what your going to replace it with and add?

I've been looking at those lights for over a year now and thinking they've got to go, just haven't put that at the top of my list. As for their replacements, still trying to decide exactly how many lights to put up there but know I'd like as many as I can fit/afford.

Great place. Your organization is awesome, and I love the S4. My B6 A4 1.8t is still the apple of my eye.

thank you, the garage is still (and probably always will be) a work in progress.

What app did you use to draw your floorplan?

If you are referring to the the house floor plans, those were actually from the builder's website. My only contribution was to enlarge and crop the pertinent area with photo shop.

Great looking garage. I like the way you did the tire rack with the bikes hanging vertically under it. I think I might borrow that idea (though with just a storage shelf on top, but be able to place the bikes under). I have two bikes and no good space over head to mount them without possibly hitting myself in the head on one of them when walking around.

thank you. Never really planned to set up the bikes and tire rack that way, just sorta ended up that way based on the few locations available for the tire rack. I am still planning on adding a shelf or baskets on the wall the bikes used to be on.

Great looking garage and nice looking Audi too!

thank you. I enjoy both the garage and the audi every day.
