As soon as you get kids, life gets interesting. The first cubby I built for my kids was a 8'x8'x6' moving box. They loved it for about 5 years. It was just a plain thing that they chalked all over.

Getting better with the brace and bit after a bit of practice (pardon the pun)...

"Can you get me that drill that your friend in America gave me"

"Aunty Kristy lives in America, does your friend know aunty Kristy?"

America is a big place

"Yeah, I know that, but does he know her!?!"

Mat

You've got to love kids at that age - enjoy it while it lasts (until they become teenagers.....)

Steve, great to hear from you too mate, hope the hospital stay is going as well as it can

TB: great to see the SUPERVISOR using his new (old) tool from the USA and it will be amazing what he can do if he chooses to with you being his dad and the internet and youtube videos to help him learn.

OMG you guys are too funny about the wind. I rarely measured wind in MPH either cause about the only time it affected me was on the golf course and i'm guessing 20 MPH winds were 2 and 3 club winds (you'd have to hit 2 or 3 more clubs than usual when blowing that hard).

now 60 MPH winds might have been a little more challenging to say the least.

hope you enjoy your kids the rest of your life and like i've said before it might be a bumpy ride raising kids, but hang on and just watch those curves.

cheers

I've got a mate who's written a book about setting up a home car workshop, and got Jack Olsen's permission to use a bunch of pictures of the 12-Gauge garage in it.

I pre-ordered it a while back, and it arrived last week.

It's a great book.

In a bit of shameless cross-thread promotion, I've started a separate thread for it here...

I missed you post earlier, love seeing Archer using the brace and bit. I noticed he had it well braced too.

If you get Aunt Kristy to post on my thread you can tell Archer I know her. America is not all that big. I know a lot of people here. There are still some I haven't met, though.

Hey Andy!

Yeah, Archer's tool skills are coming along nicely. Work outside has slowed a bit with the cold weather here, but we've got plenty of little inside projects on the go.

I don't think GarageJournal is really Aunt Kristy's scene, but I'll mention it to her.

:bounce:

Australia's not that big either, but there's still a few people here that I haven't met yet. I try to make the number of people I know bigger every day.

Challenge Aunt Kristy for Archer :)

I try to make the people I know bigger every day too. Usually I fix barbecue or pies. How do you do it?

It is a good book, definitely worth a read.

I will challenge Aunty Kristy, that's a good idea. She might be up for it.

Not much time for entertaining new friends in my life at the moment, but I do love BBQs and pies.

I try to go out of my way to embellish basic social interactions. I make an effort to learn the names of people who serve me in cafes, or work in shops where I buy things, or a tradesman I've got over to do something for me. Finding out somebody's name very often leads to more in depth conversations and finding common ground.

I also try to get to know people on a personal level. It's easy to work with people for years and never really get to know them, but it doesn't take much more effort to try and connect and find some common interests.

This seems like a minor thing, but it leads to interesting things with surprising regularity.

I got to know the owner of a cafe I used to go to quite well and I went in there recently with my wife. I hadn't been there in years, maybe as much as 10 years, but Mick the owner came running out and shook my hand and said "Mat, it's been a while". He still remembered what I used to order, and gave us our coffees for free. That's a nice feeling.

I also got to know the bloke who owns the clothing shop where I buy my work shirts and suits. I went in there last year just to say g'day and he said "Mat, it's been really quiet this morning, I'm going to lock up for an hour, my shout for breakfast".

I went to a bit of extra effort to get to know a girl at work years ago and now we're married with 2 kids.

:bounce:

That's how I do it.

Haha, I just re-read that post and realised that you're not talking about making the number of people you know larger...

You're talking about increasing the size of each of the people you already know by feeding them!

Very subtle Mr. Martin.

:bounce:

I can be a bit slow sometimes but I get there eventually.

Not too much to report in the garage related project space but we are getting outside a bit more in the warmer weather.

Super Boss' little sister is nearly 4 and really getting in on the action...

Warmer weather......where are you???? Nothing but drizzle, rain and more drizzle then lightning strikes. Ahhh, finally got some sun today, but I have no scaffold to work from, so no house work today.
We will have another pair of feet here maybe by Saturday, but I'm not pushing her, she is carrying a big load.
Merry Christmas.

Haha, yeah Terrick, it's not that warm for December but my last post above was from July and it's a lot warmer now than it was then!

Exciting times with the little one on the way!

Thanks Steve, I love getting the kids involved and don't have a choice anyway, they love getting into everything.

No joke mate. I was only commenting on the comment you made. I like making my group of friends bigger too. It helps temper my pride if I feel smaller.

Great to see SBLS bracing for a future in woodworking. Looks like she has it right.

The more friends the better hey Andy, by number, weight or volume.

Yeah, she picked up the technique with the brace pretty quickly. She wants her own toolbox for Christmas. I'm so proud!

I'll probably give it a miss this year mate.

The kids are still a bit young, might take them along in a few years.

Looking forward to seeing some pics and hearing all about it if you head in.

Mat, it's great when your son wants a toolbox but nothing beats a daughter who wants one. She's going to see that picture one day in the future and it will bring back great memories.

Christmas has arrived for you and in a couple of hours the joyful screams will start. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours.

TB: Merry Christmas

hopefully we'll see more of you and the kids (supervisors) this year. great picture of your daughter using Andy's drill he gifted the kids. of course I'm a bit concerned she'll drill through a toe with bare feet, but she looks like Dad told her to BEE CAREFUL.

cheers mate

Thanks Bob and Drives.

It is pretty special to have my daughter interested and involved in garage related things. The bare feet aren't the greatest safety measure but I had been holding the brace for her and only stepped back to take the photo.

Merry Christmas everyone!

It's been a while since I posted anything on here, so I thought I'd fire it up a bit.

A mate at work got a 3D printer and now I really want one!

He printed this thing for me, just to take the temptation to another level...

View media item 95169
It's printed in one go, with gaps between the interlocking leg segments so they move...

I was impressed

We've also had a new kitchen put in. Got somebody in to do the bulk of it, but I've been busy with all the fiddly bits around the edges.

Before...

After (still got some patching and painting to do)...

That's left the garage in a total mess, so I've got some major tidying up to do!

Very nice kitchen renovation. Looks like you opened up the kitchen by two feet. Is that so someone can be using the sink while someone else is at the stove? You might be trading QST for QKT.

Thanks, yeah, the new kitchen is a massive improvement. Lots more room, bench space and storage. Happy wife indeed!

I don't mind a bit of quality kitchen time, but I like quality serving time more.

Andy, your shop space is a lot bigger than mine, so I'm sure your messes are also on a larger scale!

No new too purchases recently, bit I did get some new toys...
View media item 95197
2nd hand, but new to me. It was about AU$7k in 2013, I paid a LOT less than that. Full carbon fibre frame and handlebars, long travel suspension both ends and tubeless tyres. It's a big upgrade over my old one (which you can see hanging on the wall in the picture of my mess above)

Thanks metalhead!

In other news, the car I bought back in post #351 is gone. This one...
View media item 95331
It was great fun, but it turned out to be incompatible with having two little kids who want to do outdoorsy stuff. Who'd have thought!

I've upgraded/downgraded/sidegraded to this...
View media item 95332
It was half the price of what I sold the STI for. It's a 2011 model with 90,000ks. It's got 193kW and 347Nm, and does 0-100 in 6.5 seconds, so it's still a lot of fun, but much more practical on weekends and I don't care so much when the make a mess in it!
