Type of Grinder to use

Im getting ready to start the planning.

I was going to acid etch but decided i might as well rent a grinder and do it right. My rental place said a turbo 7" was the way to go. What types have you guys used and what works the best for a newbie?

The Diamabrush rental with a floor maintainer from Home Depot works well. Plus, it's more forgiving than a 7" grinder.

I second the diamambrush. I had both the prep and removal wheels. I found the removal wheel very aggressive and it was a job for me to handle. The prep wheel was a bit easier to handle but took a bit longer to achieve the same results....Steve

The machine rental itself is pretty cheap, but they told me I basically had to buy my own diamond blade and the total price was going to be something like 300+ dollars? Is this legit? or did the person working that day just not have a clue what I was talking about?

From my experience, you were misinformed. My local Home Depot rents the floor maintainer separate from diamabrush but I could also rent the diamabrush and didn't have to purchase one. I think my total out the door for 4 hours was around $120-$130.

They should be renting the entire package. Ask for a manager.

My home depot tried to rent me a 7 inch hand held angle grinder. No wheel included, that's another $140. No thanks.

Equip rental places have the stone type floor machines for about $100/day. They are the way to go.

I only said Home Depot because it was already mentioned at the top of this thread. But definitely, if you can find a cheaper place, use it. I have a BLASTRAC / Diamatic wholesaler by my office that I use and it whoops HD's ***. But that obviously isn't an option for everyone.

I rented an EDCO w/ brand new 10" disc from HD recently because HD nearby ran out of the Diamabrush. My friend whom is familiar with the regular floor polisher/sander came over to help and he said the EDCO machine is much harder to use. We tried couple methods and just stuck with the push and pull method.

We spent 2.5hrs grinding it in two passes. I wouldn't rent it again if I have the choice of using the Diamabrush.

Sorry if I missed a prior thread, but what are to trying to remove?...or just preparing the surface to take a painted finish?

For some reason THD opts for the lesser machine, minus the shroud and vac outlet.

We sell the unit with the shroud and it is awesome. Connect to a Dustless Shop Vac and breathe easy.

as I slowly get my garage together (gotta do a bit more drywall work) one question I've had when it comes to grinding... is what's the generally better way of doing things?

Should I paint my garage first (walls/ceiling) first THEN grind? I know I'm going to be making an insane amount of dust. The paint I'm using is semi-gloss so it would wipe clean and easy. (might be easier to wipe it down after being painted vs wiping down bare drywall)?

When I did my garage last year I had to remove old Epoxy. I rented an EDC unit with Diamondsert (sp) blades Rental was about $150 had to buy one set of blades for about $300. It worked very well but was very expensive. This year since I am on bear concrete I will be using the diamond brush from HD about $50 per day + $50 for the wheel.
