I have used 18-2, 18-4 and 18-8 stranded direct burial for fire alarm work which is usually 24vdc. Would need to check on the 600 volt rating. We keep it separated from higher voltage.

Smaller then 14 AWG conductors are not building wiring THHN THWN is not made smaller than 14 AWG, 16 gauge is TFFN fixture wire.

Never heard of Tray Cable with 600V and a direct burial rating !
DB and sunlight resistant tray cable seems to go hand in hand, as does 600V. 18AWG tray cable is a little odd, but not unheard of.

BTW, mini-split hookup wire is just repackaged tray cable. I found DB sprinkler wire too, but that seems to come in only a 30V rating.

Aside from TFFN, you've got TEW and MTW, and I'm sure others, but while all of these may likely be rated for wet locations, they all require conduit, so I'm not sure what you're getting at. OP is looking for DB, so I think TC is the ticket.

Strictly conjecture: if you're looking for 600v rating you will have to go to a #14. Here in Canada I would order 2c #14 TECK90.
Voltage rating has nothing to do with conductor size, unless it is some obscure code requirement. Voltage rating is related to the insulation

I am not the guy who memorized the code book but I recall class 1 wiring had to be 14 gage or larger wires. Class 2 can be small gage wires but are limited to less than 24 volts and 100VA.

So I do not think you can be code compliant need for 18 gage 600v direct burial wire.

Yes indeed. However what I failed to articulate is that where I am I don't think I would find a 600v rated cable in a size less than #14.

This is only partially correct. While class 2 is limited to carry 60V, there are plenty of situations where you might need to run class 2 wiring through a class 1 wiring space. In those situations, it is the insulation class that matters, not to keep the 48V (or less in), but to keep the 600V out. An example (not a good one, but a valid one), is 600V rated Cat 6 wire that due to it's rating is allowed to share a conduit with 240V wiring). This product for example is 23 AWG class 2 rated for 600V:
More real-world scenarios are where network equipment is used to monitor or control hard wired equipment within control cabinets.

POE often reaches 57V. Telephone ring signals can exceed 130V, and most certainly are class 2, so I don't know how the rules are applied there, but I think what it boils down to is that the power output is inherently not likely to start fires.

Additionally, while we're on the subject of code compliance, code doesn't apply universally. NEC is there to protect building wiring, but wiring within appliances falls under UL, not NEC, and you cannot be telling me that wires carrying 120V are never to be found below 14 AWG. Heck, the UL listed transfer switches and UPS gear I work with have lots of 18 AWG wiring (mostly AWM or MTW rated) carrying 480V.
