Some NWS tin snips left in the dregs of the Homebase clearance. Anyone know if they are any good compared to aviator snips?

300mm £5.

200mm £3

Oh! That is an incredible deal. I dream of one day finding a deal like that.

I bought a pair of Wiss metal snips yesterday for £5 at Homebase.

What is it with Homebase and american brands that you rarely see anywhere else?

It was previously Bunnings before they sold it off and it was named back to the former Homebase brand.

Bunnings is an Australian company owned by Westfarmers. They stock quite a large amount of American, European and Asian made tools.

The Australian format/model of stores unfortunately didn't work for them in the UK hence why the new owners of the renamed Homebase stores are selling off lines they no longer are keeping. There have been some pretty good clearance items but I think most stores have pretty much cleared it out.

I landed a Wera torque wrench and my brother too. Truly a great deal. Sadly no NWS at our local Homebase.

Is it not actually Starrett? Mine (arriving tomorrow apparently) will be going back if not.

Mine arrived yesterday and is stamped Starrett but does not say where it is manufactured.

I have a number of Vogel rulers made in Germany and the Starrett I feel is more rigid.

Certainly worth the £6 in my opinion

Mine arrived, very nice. As everyone says, website says USA but couldn’t see COO on it. Not unusual for Starrett I’m afraid. Well worth £6!

You probably got the only one? Good catch. I have a few Signet tools and they're nicely made.

It said 3 in stock when I ordered. Just checked the link and they have shot up to £190 with 2 in stock.

Signet stuff is decent, collecting a few more bits now with some of the bargains on Amazon.

No, they are Proxxon's general use spanners not specialist thin ones. Misleading name

Its hard to beat Halfords for value for wrenches, extensions, sockets, any i have i am really happy with. I think Gearwrench/Apex make a lot of their stuff, its does look identical on some lines at least.

Totally agree, the quality of the sockets is very high and the warranty is (currently) much less hassle than returning stuff to the snapon man.

Spotted this Halfords pro set at a autojumble a while back.

I've read a few times that popular opinion is that the older 'Professional' branded tools were better quality than the newer 'Advanced' tools and maybe there was a switch to another manufacturer. The spanners look identical (from pics). Does anyone agree that the older tools were better? Worth buying used Pro over new Advanced? Not wanting anything currently, just interested.

I don't think i have much of the older pro stuff but the last thing i got was the Advanced extension set which is I really like. I prefer these over my usual go to for tools (Toptul) as they have really nice knurling (like Gearwrench) and the Toptul extensions are a smooth shiny chrome that is a PITA to turn by hand. Price of 20£ at the time was also great.

Its very possible production could be moved though as Apex have lots of manufacturing options at different price levels.

In my experience the Halfords professional ratchets were definitely better than the Advanced. Not sure if this is true for all the tools they marketing.

From a few advanced, Pro and standard I have it seems that The Advanced is nowadays probably what was at that time the standard Halfords, I.e. the steel is softer and if you abuse them they deform and sometimes fail.

Don’t quote me on this but buy a few a try a bit hard on them.

I had the Halfords pro 170pc set up until a few months ago, replaced it with the advanced 1/4 and 3/8 tool trays. They haven’t had much use so far, but I haven’t seen any difference in quality between expert and pro. FWIW, I was never much of a fan of how the pro set felt in the hand, compared to draper expert or sealey premier, but at £30/tray I can’t fault Halfords.

The Halfords advanced ratchets definitely aren’t snap on, they feel a lot like blue point, but I can’t fault the sockets and extensions. I’ll give them some abuse over the next few weeks and report back :)
