Cheers. I've had plenty of interest so far, so I can't be too far off the mark. I did manage to sell the top box already as well.

Britool lockwire pliers turned up today. They're not actually marked Britool anywhere, but still seem good for the money.

Apologies for taking this thread hostage...but I'm after some UK tool advice!

I have a couple of tools...and trying to service the wifes car proved that I need some more!
I can't afford Facom/Snap On, unless I'm looking in the wrong places for them!

What's everyones thoughts on Clarke Pro or Halfords Pro/Advanced Pro?

I'm thinking about these sets...:

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/pro100-55-piece-screwdriverpliers-set
http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/pro121-3-pce-long-reach-screwdriver-set
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_811701_langId_-1_categoryId_165572

Should I just look for 2nd hand SnapOn etc on ebay instead?

Snap is I think over-rated for the money, and 2nd hand probably still costs more than Facom or most of the German (or other European) brands.

The Halfords stuff is OK and will get the job done. I don't generally think it's worth full price, but probably decent value on sale. I have a set myself, and while I don't have anything bad to say about them I haven't touched them in ages now I have nicer stuff.

I have a lot of Facom myself -and most of it I've bought quite cheaply on promo sales and on ebay, but not without a far bit of time and effort to search out the deals. I'm sure the same could be done for most of the other Euro-brands. That's what this thread is about after-all :)

Short answer then is; If you have time and patience on your side, wait for the deals on the good stuff. If you need it now Halfords will generally be OK.

The only clarke tool I have is a breaker, bar so can't really speak about those.

If you are only using for hobby you don't need snap on or facom. But bear in mind you only get what you pay for, the cheaper tools may not last as long or perform as well. My advice would be to take your time and buy when you really need it.

The best advice is to have patience and keep a keen eye on eBay.

The tools in your first two links look cheapy and I would avoid. They look good value at first, but you will end up replacing them and will cost more in the long run.

Halfords are fine for sockets and ratchet spanners.

Screwdrivers and pliers are not areas to scimp on. The difference between good ones and cheap ones is night and day.

As far as I am aware, the best value screwdrivers are the Stanley Fatmax ones, which are rebranded bost and made in france.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=stanley+fatmax+screwdrivers&_sacat=0&_from=R40

You can pick up full sets on eBay for very little money.

For allen keys, go Bondhus, no question about it.

For pliers keep an eye out on eBay auctions. If they say Germany on them, the chances are they are excellent. Knipex always go for high prices, but there are loads of less known brands and rebranded German pliers that go for nothing.

Since Snap On prices are inflated soo high here, even the used prices tend to be bad value. The only items I have picked up were mislabeled and hence went cheap.

Sound advice, I couldn't have said it better myself.

I would try to build a top tier brand core (socket set, spanner set, screwdriver set etc. - your bread and butter for most jobs) and then consolidate with lesser brands, the odd second hand, ebay bargains, online promotions etc.

Teng, Sealey and Halfords professional in particular are good second tier brands. I would stay away from Clarke, Silverline and the like, it's generally cheap ****.

Also, pay attention to this thread. Our peeps have a keen eye for bargains.

This is also sound advise... :D

I went with Facom for my hardline tools... Sockets, ratchets, spanners, pliers,
screwdrivers etc... but have a full set of Halfords pro for my 12 point sockets
and they are really good. Sealey was my choice for air tools and workshop
equipment, it all works fine and very good value for money, and they are also
a good choice for specialist tools for those odd or one off jobs.

Other good brands in the UK that are comparable quality to Halfords Pro stuff
are... Signet, Gearwrench, Draper Expert, (I think these three brands along
with Halfords actually source their tools from the same manufacturer)
Britool Expert, Koken and Teng are three others...

All those above are excellent value tools that will last you a lifetime if you
don't abuse them and cost a fraction of what you would pay for Facom,
Snap On, Hazet and Stahlwille tools, although as Lestat said keep an eye
here for cracking deals to be had on these top brands.

Nice one. Jump in the deal thread, clear the stock, then sell to the members who missed the deal.

How did you work out it was him, I though ebay hid buyers identities until you can see the feedback?

I've previously noticed that ebay user was selling items from this thread. The hidden bidder ID's are a hash of their actual ID, and the number of feedbacks is identical.

Hello, my name is N.I. and I am a tool addict. I came here seeking sanctuary, instead there seems to be a witch hunt going on.

We absolutely deny all responsibility of buying a few pairs of Knipex pliers wrenchs.

We did not do it. It wasn't us. For you see it was the pet Cobras we keep. Our Precious. They made us. Lonely they said said they said they were. Buy them they said. We said no.

They took us by the throat. Yes our poor throat. They made us buy them. Bite they said. Buy them or we'll bite! We had to buy them. They made us!

If you want someone to blame, blame yourselves. How dare you blame us. Two years ago we was's a normal Human Being. And then we found it. Yes we were stumbling along in the dark with cheap crappy tools and then found ...... this forum. Our life changed at that very moment. It took control. You told us to buy the Cobras!

On a more serious note.

I was only going to buy two pairs. I don't see why you wouldn't buy two. If you are working on hydraulic, water or air fitting you generally need one to hold and one to tighten. I assume that those who only bought one pair already had a couple.
I was about to click buy, and then took another look at the price and thought it is far too good. I gave my dad a shout and he said he would take a pair, so I bought three pairs. I have no shame and I stress that they will not be resold.

On the topic of selling, and I find it mildly amusing that CanUK was the one to bring it up considering he is probably the biggest resellers of stuff off this thread. The only difference is that not all of us list everything as private listings ;) (although to be fair with him, he does have a thriving business selling *** toys and gimp outfits, and obviously needs to protect his customers).

I am not having a go, and I see nothing wrong with reselling a few things on. Generally for me to benefit from any of these deals I have to buy a number of items to spread the cost of postage. Postage to Northern Ireland is generally from £11 to £15 and rarely free no matter what I spend. If there is nothing else I need and the deal is good enough, I will buy a few to sell. However, when you add up the initial postage cost, then paypal fees and then allow for a second postage cost, it certainly isn't a big money earner, and really just for fun.

The only exception being the Knipex wire strippers which was my first addition to this thread. I went all out on them and evidently so did a number of lurkers/members who read this thread :D.
Well done! There is nothing wrong with taking a a small slice of Amazon's pie.

LOL. Seriously though, I didn't bring it up - I just answered a question, and explained how I'd figured it out :headscrat

I actually first noticed the connection when I was searching Ebay for Wiha and noticed the split-up Bosch sets - clicked the "sellers other items" and then the penny dropped.

That was quite a while back, and though I was curious about who it might be I didn't bother trying to work it out until yesterday. I didn't publicly out your GJ ID either, so hopefully no hard feelings.

Now what about those Cobolts?! :D

Nicely figured out. Certainly no hard feelings. It was all meant as a bit of banter.
