So, I'm so excited for this. Finally got my door installed yesterday, and it's a monster!

Hoho, It looks so "normal" in the picture but I knew it was big. Then I went back and found the dimensions...
Eric- it is going to be a big door 22'-0" wide x 13'-6" tall.
You could parallel park a 1959 Cadillac Fleetwood Limo in the opening and still have room to walk around it. Beautiful door and the Big Mountain Playstation is just awesome. Looking forward to the finishing touches!

The high glass lets in a ton of light and still allows for privacy.

This is the heaviest door I've ever seen. The installers said it was near 1500#.
Three guys over 8 hours to install. Thes springs (4 of them are nearly 10" diameter)

And the size of the track and hardware!

Really need a banana or something for scale in the photos

are you using a chain to open that thing? :shocking:

jim

Right now yes. They installed a commercial door lift on this, when they went to adjust the limit switches, they where missing. They will order them, and be here in a week, just about the time I'm back from my vacation.

That will is crazy to think about how big that door really is, I have a 16' x 12' on my shop and it feels monstrous.

I thought I had a lot going on until I read through this monster garage build thread. I would love to have that exact space to live in, minus the house of course.

The whole place looks like damn awesome and I love all the log/timber in the exterior. Once you get the rental suites done (if that's still in the plan) there's a very good chance I'll get a hold of you to come and pay to see it all for a week or so :D

Any updates?

Sorry I have been so busy at work the last six months it's been hard to find the time to update! This is what I've been working on.

Awesome property
The garage door came out great
Thanks.... I started looking at the paperwork for the garage door and opener, they had installed the wrong one! So they had to come back out and replace it with a commercial version.

Jbinut- Thanks!! I head to your neck of the woods once a year, not sure how close you are but Haydays snowmobile grass drags are in Long Branch, MN. I have been to them for the last 3 years in a row. I am jealous of your farm, I'm no farmer but my grand dad had a couple of feed lots here in WA. I still plan and building the rental suites and would love to have you out.

Hi Eric it is a drone pic, we have a DJI phantom 3 drone that takes killer pics. Used to have an Ariel photographer that would fly over the projects monthly for progress pictures, and I have seen photographers with balloons do the same, cant beat a drone for photos though. I am building a 250,000 sq ft Mixed use building. Two levels of parking, office space, retail and restaurant spaces, 130 units, 189 bedrooms total. All built on top of geo-piers
Picture from last week, trusses and roof framing going on. Start to today: 138 working days. pop.JPG

your commercial project-is that all wood framing on the upper levels? seems like i read somewhere a while back about a trend amongst architechs to be designing multi story buildings mainly out of engineered wood instead of steel or/and concrete. is that what you have there? looks huge.

Jim, this project has 2 levels of structural Post Tension Concrete Decks with 3.5 levels of wood framing above.
The building codes typically limit the height of wood structures. I have seen in Canada that they have built some pre engineered wood structures over the standard height, which i believe is 7 stories, there is one in BC that is 18 stories that was just completed.

This is one of my favorite ideas so far.I picked up this 50"x 96" aluminum clad door. It was actual a sliding door unit.
image_3.jpg
It took me awhile to convince my garage door guys it could be done. I wanted this door to be a high lift door, on garage tracks. So it lifts straight up.
and here it is.door1_1.jpg

Sorry about the crummy pics.
The door just glides effortlessly, up and down. I love it.

That man door is a great idea! I love the utility of something like that for rolling things in & out without having to go over a sill. For a heated space, one might not want to have to open a big overhead door, or in your case, the monstrous overhead door.

That's a cool idea on the door. What was your reasoning behind doing it that way versus a swing in or out door?

C_F- that door opening is 50" wide. I can roll My snowmobiles in and out easily. I have lost no wall area or space on the inside, a swinging door would have interfered with the in-floor motorcycle lift if it swung in, and on the outside there will be an exterior concrete staircase to the upper level that i don't want to block. The door lets in an incredible amount of light, and i just dig thinking outside the box. I can open this door just a little or all the way for ventilation, and it glides so easily!

Makes perfect sense, thanks for the reply.

Wow! Just spent the past few hours going through your whole build, and I'm really impressed! The scale, and the whole scope of the project, are nearly as breathtaking as the scenery. Thanks for sharing with us, and we'll be sure to keep pestering you if you go a few months without updating.

Im pretty excited about these! they are going to have wall mounted controls to operate. They have a real nice finish and are pretty smooth for air operated.

These came with the motorcycle wheel vice and front and back extensions, and ramps. I also got the side extensions. And yes they will be flush in the floor.:pimpflash

Something I got done a while back, finally finished installing the log railing.
I slit the logs at the top and bottom, just on the inside, then inserted the leg on the buckets I had made and through bolted with 2 -5/8" galvanized bolts. Painted the buckets black.
bucket_1.jpgphoto04.jpgphoto03.jpgIMG_2075.jpg
For the base i cut 1/4" steel 4"x 5" and welded on some weldable rebar. I drilled and epoxied the bars into the wall below, then through bolted through the log and plate.
