Unique C clamp - what is it for?

Found this while going through granddad's old tool box. Know what it was for? Looks like slots in the side might have held a tray or cable maybe? Can barely see the odd clip on top. The "C" is about 5" long.

Someone modified that clamp with those cutouts and that end, then reinforced the inside and finally painted it yellow.

Grandpa had two of these in his collection. He was a carpenter pretty much his whole life after the war (WWII). These are made of stamped steel and I would consider them very light duty compared to the standard C-clamp. There are no markings on them whatsoever. I am at a total loss as to...

Thats exactly what that clamp is. To hold lanterns, metal stringer and minnow bucket on an aluminum boat.
