Unusual Compressor

I've owned a lot of compressors and used a lot of different kinds of compressors, but I've never seen one like this before today. Pictures are from a CL ad. Anyone else ever run into a direct-drive V-twin like this Atlas Copco? I'm wondering if it was purpose-built for some specific application.

I've seen a few direct drive compressors, I don't know the benefits of this type of set up other then a very compact arrangement.

It's hard to tell from the picture but it looks like the motor shaft might not be directly inline with the crank centerline, it looks a little dropped, or maybe my eyes are wrong. What about a planetary transmission, could there be one in that coupler? So that's a 1725rpm motor?

Looks neat anyway.

Don't believe it was anything special, except for the quality. Atlas Copco are not as big here as in Europe. But that direct drive style has been around for a while with them. It is a very high quality machine and the price reflects it. You will typically find they run 2 to 3 times more than any other similar sized compressor. BTW what was the asking price?

My compressor is a direct drive V-twin 3hp, with a horizontal 50 Litre tank.
It uses oil and is quiet enough, or maybe not too loud is a better phrase.
It sits happily under one of my workbenches, is quite compact and works
perfectly for my DIY uses, and has done for a few years now. I can definitely
recommend the setup.

Are you looking at "Dougdeals"? Might get one for a good price, just need 3 phase power.

I've seen lots of direct drives before, but always on lower end stuff like Sears compressors... haven't seen one on an industrial machine like this. They've got this one listed a s 2-stage, but I don't believe it is, just a two-cylinder single stage.

And yeah, it's one of dougdeals' listings. And yes it's 3-phase. They want $824 (+tax) for it. I'm not in the market, just intrigued.

Pricing starts at $2741 for a 2 Hp, $11,639 on a lubricated 20 HP, and $14,104 for a 10 Non-lub. Not the kind of stuff for your normal garage. Just imagine what parts pricing is going to be like!
This machine has been around quite a while. Very reliable, very expensive to buy and parts are even higher.

This one is 125 psi max, it was on a label in another picture I didn't post.

thats a lot of diagnosis from a simple picture.... i dont see how you could even attempt to see that with those pictures.
