Urinal vs. Toilet

A shower can be wasted space. I have urinal and should get a real one but its behind a privacy sheet and no one see it or notice it being used from elsewhere in the shop. My vote is a urinal and stool with vanity sink, conventional. Mine is off my office, its use rate is low, for guests and minor use for number 2, the pisser saves traffic to the regular bathroom.

Go with the urinal, especially in your situation. Simple install, much less expense, no wasted space, quick piss and back to work.

Sometimes us guys just hang in the garage, drink a few beers  while working on a project. Having that urinal would be the best tool yet, your friends can use it and best of all it can’t be borrowed, or stolen…..Lol! (I’m talking myself into installing one while posting this!)

If it becomes a problem, simply remove it, done deal.

Common guys, just how many craps do you need to take while working :dunno:

I can tell you are under 30.

The point is, if cost isn't an issue (which you say it isn't), a toilet can do everything while installing a urinal is installing something that is limited in use.

My vote would be for a toilet.

How much fall if any do you have? You don't want a lot of fall anyways. IIRC, the fall for a toilet drain is 1/4" per foot.

You could put a urinal in, then put an incinerator toilet in although I don't know what the cost would be for one. They run off of 120 or 220 and say that you will only have about a cupful of ash per week off of one if used regularly. I just saw an ad in Family Handyman a few minutes ago. The website is www.incinolet.com

Before you do anything though, I would double check and see how far down your outlet is on your septic and see how much fall it would give you. I know on my septic tank that the honeydipper that cleaned mine out said it was actually too deep, or deeper than normal. The good thing is that I can put a bathroom in if I add on.

When I read the title, my first thought was "you can't poop in a urinal", then after reading the first page of replies, it seems that was a lot of guys first thoughts...

You say money is no issue, put a freakin toilet in and be done.

I have both in a Mens room in our office. The Urinal is a waste of space and $.
#1 + #2 = Toilet, done.

Check with our local codes about having waste from a detached building into the house septic. My buddy is trying to do this right now. His pole barn is 40 feet from his house and he can gravity drain too but they won't allow it.

A lot of that has to do with the local code people worrying that if it has a bathroom, you will end up renting the building out and they won't gain any tax dollars off of it.

Toilet would be my choice. I hadn't considered the shower but am now! Already have a dual bowl SS utility sink (think restaurant style) I plan on putting in.

I **** in my toilet all the time. Almost a daily routine to go out to check things out in the morning and drop a load!
If I was out in the shop and had to poop I'd have to walk back to the house... screw that!

Another informal poll while on the subject:

Do you take care of the paperwork while still seated or standing?

Thumper68 check with some of the big box stores. If I remember correctly they have toilets that do not need to drain thru the floor. They have a simple pump set up out the back. Or you may be able to simply build a platform to step up on and run the line out to your tank at floor level.

either will be ok , but make sure you have some salad or laundry tongs handy for getting yer todger out when you have dirty hands, otherwise dirty hands = dirty willy:lol:
many a time I've been hopping about whilst washing my hands and bustin for a wee:willy_nil

Throw on a (clean ) rubber glove. Listening to running water while washing up is torture.

I would go for the throne. Never thought of having a shower in the shop either, but seems like a good idea. My old lady has started to jump me as soon as I got in the door, then stopped when she realized how filthy I was , lol.
Shower could double as an emergency eye wash too, should you ever get anything nasty in them.

Speaking of eye washes, how many of you guys have some sort of one in your personal shops?

I had a urinal in a basement, it was an awesome toilet! I would get one again when possible. They're much more convenient and women won't ***** about the seat being up

I have a urinal in the half bath off my bedroom. Does that make it a 5/8 bath??? I also have a urinal setup in my shop. I prefer to piss in a urinal to reduce the splash and splatter. I am 60 years old and diabetic so I frequently have to piss. Both age and diabetes do that to you. Prostate troubles can aggravate the situation. I usually only have to dump once per day so a toilet inside is OK.

A box of rubber gloves near the urinal is handy. Carb cleaner is not good for hands or Willy. I try to keep wet wipes around also.

For some odd reason I always seem to need to dump after I walk out in the shop. Sometimes I think it is the petroleum fumes etc from machines and paint. I just frown and go back inside. It could also be the 'exercise' that brings on a dump so I always try to do a little work in the house before I head to the shop.

A toilet. Why put something in and then having to go in the house to use a toilet? Besides, you can pee out in the yard and you don't have to put in a urinal.

If you put some sort of eyewash station in, be very careful in what you get. We had some at work that were self contained, meaning that the water was stored in them and they were portable to where you could move them around. One person used one and got an eye infection. Come to find out, they had sit around so long with the water in them that the water had bacteria in it. They finally took all of those out and tossed them.

If you have a sink in the garage, get one of the eyewash stations that the caps pop off when you pull the small lever. You get a flood of water but not pressure, to wash your eyes. The bottom pic is what I am talking about that we had scattered around the shop at different places.

Are you going to have a sink? If so why a urinal then?

As for the eyewash stations. Yes you need to replace the contained ones regularly just like any other safety equipment. We replace them here annually along with any time it gets used. Same goes with many of the supplies in the first aid kit.

You're a guy. The world is your urinal!

No budget and you have the room. A sink with hot and cold water is first and then a toilet.

So this is in your shop? Who is going to clean it? :dunno:

Ever go into a place that has not been cleaned in years? Sorry, even a guy doesn't want to sit in there.

That is why I much prefer the splash free, or lets say much less, urinal situation. Splash free didn't matter much when you were a toddler and mommy cleaned up your mess but as you grew taller your aim did not improve and your volume multiplied. You know it's true, you still shoot all the battleship bubbles occasionally...:D

Please tell me that was a joke.
Not for a lot of these guys, they splatter piss all over the sink... Some even wash the ****** or head cheese off their finger with their hose.

Ya know, if you sit down to pee, you won't splash as much! :lol_hitti

That is what I do when I have to use a toilet. Most guys just splash all over. Seat up, seat down does not seem to matter. Piss will go everywhere. I grew up with 3 sisters so I was trained as a 'seated gentleman'. I trained my son that way and he has indoctrinated others. I would wear out my belt buckle anymore if I had to sit every time though.

There is a good animated Gif on here about what happens when a guy stands and sneezes...

Informal poll: Urinal vs. Toilet

I'm getting started on my 36'x48' shop within the next 6 weeks. And I'm back and forth between urinal and toilet.

Urinal positives: simpler, can plumb into the rain drains and send out as "grey water", will likely be cheaper to put into service.
Urinal negatives: can't poop in a urinal, have to walk into the house to use toilet.

Toilet positives: don't have to run for the house (70') to poop, i could have a mini apartment when i'm in the doghouse, more readily available for purchase.

Toilet negatives: have to add a sump with grinding pump, as I won't have enough fall to get to the septic tank, can't really plumb into rain drains.

These are a few things I came up with. Cost isn't really an issue for either scenario, was just seeking some input for either. What do you all have, and are you happy with it. Thanks all.

Outhouse. Dig a hole. If you don't have close neighbors.

Yeah, I'd go toilet. Depends on how long you stay in there though.

I just received one of these in the mail. Unfortunately, the "neck" on my faucet is angled such that I can't fit the wash assembly on it.

Is there such a thing an "adapter" I can screw on between the faucet and wash assembly to give me another 5mm+?
