This evening my brother in law informed me that he plans to put up a shop for his trucking business in the next year. Kicker of it is he has a 30' x 40' pole building in the location currently. He informed me that when the time comes I can have it if I take it down.

Simple pole building with barn doors on end and a garage door in the one corner. Not really what I want but I can hardly turn down the deal.

Any concerns I should look out for?

Metal is in good shape.
Nailed on, which would be a pain.
"Lighted" roof panels would need to be replaced.
Could I reuse the 4x6 and use concrete anchor plates. (just cut them flush with existing concrete)

Everything would be mine, excluding the concrete.

Next time I am over to his place I will takea few pictures.

Call some pole building companies and get prices for the heck of it. Neighbor got one for free and cost him $10,000.00 to disassemble and rebuild.Just a thought.

I would be doing the tear down and rebuild would be done by myself and my father in law who is a licensed contractor with all the know how.

Besides the concrete work and some materials all would be done on a beer and pizza budget.

Ive done it. Lots of work but simple. Dont sweat the small stuff. Label the panels so you can put them back where they belong. If you want to add height nows the time to do it. You could do wainscoting and add 3 feet to the height. Buy some metal building insulation and put it below the metal before you attach it. Also if the building doesnt have rat guard on the bottom of the ribs add it. It will keep alot of rodents out. I would use polebarn sheet metal screws instead of nails. I would skip on lighted panels and replace them with solid metal. Add windows. Look for used ones on cl or your habitat for humanity re store, Get windows with J channel built in. It makes for a much easier and better install. I think you will need to purchase some trim. Mine didnt come off all that great. Instead of concrete brackets use perma columns they are stronger and dont require you to have a slab with footing. Any more questions just ask.

Oh and dont skimp on beer and pizza it keeps a happy crew around. If you have a large truck build a platform on top of it.

Can you explain the rat guards? I am needing something for an existing pole barn and have seen where folks use steel wool and expanding foam but I am worried the steel wool will rust.

Perma columns are a great call!
Screws will be used for reassembly
All panels would be numbered

Understood on needing to buy some metal to replace what may be damaged during disassembly.

Moving the materials will be easy as he drives semi and has a flat bed trailer.

Years ago I helped dan and a few others move a 40 x 350 chicken house. It is lots of work biut the price is great, and you get the satifaction of doing it yourself. Make lots of measurements, width at top and bottom, length top and bottom, lath spacing, truss or rafter spacing make notes if there is anything you will add like extra lathing on the top, take lots of pictures. as far as the post try to pull them up they may pull up concreat and all if so break the old mud off and reset. or if you decide on attaching to a plate dig deep holes below where the post go before you pore the floor and add some rebar or steel t post, our steel truss chicken houses have a footer with a 5' deep hole filled with concreat below each truss

I have seen your build posts with the Duece, nothing that large here.

But have access to a Skytrac rental for cheap. Used it for doing my house roof project and was worth it's weight in GOLD.
