uses for dead space between door track & wall?

Greetings, in my garage, there is about 12" of clearance between the track & the ceiling & about 18" of clearance between the track and the wall and I'm looking for some ideas on how to use this space effectively as possible.

Initially, my thoughts were a soffit storage cabinet, but there’s hardly enough vertical space to bother, and folding chairs or a ladder might be too bulky /heavy to safely (dis)mount.

Does anyone have any suggestions/pics or tales of woe? Thanks!!

I have a long ladder hung above the door on the front.

On one side I have used screws to hold various yard working tools. The other has just enough space for ladder hanging on the wall and tanks on the bottom.

Cart is 18" deep x 6' long. I store my sheet goods on it. Being on wheels it will roll away from the wall to easily access the back of the stack. I mounted a couple drawers to the bottom for storage of my scrap metal.

Shelf is made of 2x2"s and a piece of 1/4" plywood. Screwed to the studs and the door track. I use it to store sawhorses on. Only issue is you can't get stuff off the shelf when the door is open.

Clamp storage, hang your levels, a hose reel, store extra metal or wood, install your speaker there or all of the above like I did. In fairness I had 30".

This is what I came up with when I built the shelves.

I need to finish reorganizing this corner now that I bought a HF 13 drawer box, the Craftsman is staying, and the gray box will become a welder cart for my 220 MIG and 110 stick... I have stuff stacked on the upper shelf now. And on the other side of the garage, I just have junk piled in the corner...

I have a madox handle that hangs right there, just in case someone gets stupid with me. sorry no pics. Theres also a Daisy bb gun there for "warning" the nieghborhood cats.

I built these this past weekend, inspired by this site and this thread. I choose 1x4s and 2x2s, (left overs from another project) for the frame and then I used 1x4s in lue of plywood. I made them 8' long, the 1x4s were 8fts as well so no cutting and no waste. They went up pretty fast too. The chain hanger is just on old 2x4 and some 1x4s screwed to the stud and the door track. I'm hooked on this site.

What is that wire rack you used???? I could seriously use something like that for the very same purpose, conduit and Plastic pipe.

lol! I swear I didn't steal the cart. I bought it from a guy on CL that got it from an office building that was throwing a couple of them out. Said they were used for moving tables around the building. Either way, I feel good knowing I didn't steal anything.

What is that wire rack you used???? I could seriously use something like that for the very same purpose, conduit and Plastic pipe.

I'm gonna guess it is "cable tray", used in building construction to provide a pathway for laying in low-voltage cabling.

Great idea for using it as storage basket, though!

That's exactly what it is we got some double shipped to a job and i got about 30 feet of it

Charles...that is wire gutter....used typically for wire and Ethernet....the brackets are uni-strut....

jayrush....good use of the wireway.....I'll have to keep my eyes out for some.....

Nice use of space on some of these, but for a "woe", that space is typically used for vehicle door opening clearance.

I park an 02 z28 in my garage. The door swings open with about 6" of clearance past the plywood. It is very comfortable to get in and out of the car.
