Hey guys, my father and I have been gathering tools/ideas to start a mechanics shop. I had told him that I was dead set on the 41'' USG toolbox at HF. While he said that the 56" seemed much more useful to him. Well after I got off work today he came to the garage and had a 56'' in the back of his pickup. We unloaded it and a quickly realized it wasn't the same offer 56'' that I had messed with at my HF.

I don't keep up with the GJ to well in the summer, because I usually buck over to the HDforums but I had to see what was up with this thing. After a quick search I didn't find anything. Is anyone else aware of the new (?) USGeneral Pro tool boxes?

If memory serves me right 56'' vs 56" pro
-Better ball bearing slides
-better and bigger casters
-full extension drawers

The shape and height also are messing with me, it seems much taller and more comfortable, and the design has definitely changed, it's much more appealing. Maybe it's because it's in my garage now that it's seemingly awesome, or maybe USG upgraded the 56". When I saw it before I said :headscrat. Now I  .

The finish seems better to :pimpflash

I'm in the market for a new box. I was just looking online, and it hit me. A guy could have two 44s for the price of one of the 56" boxes. So I'm wondering if there's a significant quality difference between the two? The bigger box at my hf, is locked, and they have apparently lost the key. So it's hard to tell the whole story. But I'd like to see some pictures, and more important for me at least, I'd like to know the stock numbers. BTW, on a related subject. The five drawer cart that everyone seems to like so much, there's two seemingly identical ones online. Same price, different numbers. That's why I'd like to know about the numbers on the 56". So I don't get stuck with an older lesser model.

Far as I can tell, no, there's no quality difference. Size, that's all. I could really use a 56", but priced like it is and standing right beside the 44" they're pretty much making my mind up for me.

For me, I wish the 56 model had more drawers, obviously with those drawers being shallower. I love the width and I love the depth of it...but those drawers are too deep height-wise for me to utilize efficiently. I would wind up losing out on so much storage space. The 56 model I've seen at my local Harbor Freight is definitely worth the sale price in my opinion.

Yes, that's true, it's definitely worth the price. But for me, to be able to justify the price, it would need a few full length drawers. A fellow could probly get a 44"box, add an end cabinet, and come out about the same. However the end cabinet would have to have ball bearing glides, my hf didn't have an end cabinet when I was there the other day. So comparison becomes difficult. Now if they made a 56" top box, that would definitely change things a bit.

Some of us hung the side cabinet from the 44" on it. You can out one on each end if you like. Ideally I would also put two 26" on top of it. One SAE one metric.

The few times I had been in HF I've always looked at the 56" one as well and always though "why is this locked", but it turns out it has a little sliding switch under the right side of every handle for the corresponding drawer. So I'm not trying to say "you just don't know how to open it", so it's worth checking that if you haven't. There are two HF's around me now and I just couldn't figure out why both of them had the 56" box locked. It also looks like one of their new service carts uses the same style of drawers too.

Did not know that! Course I'll be the first to admit I can be an idiot. But in my defense, I must say, I really wasn't looking to buy. But those dang tool boxes are like a magnet. Seems like every time I stop by, I drift that direction. But more to the point. I was just trolling another thread, and someone posted that, when they'd put an end box on both ends of the 26"box, they noticed the bottom sheet metal needs beefing up a bit. It seems the metal is not thick enough for the weight of an end box on both ends. Now, I wonder if anyone here has had any experience with this, specifically the 44". Now I don't think I would need a box on either end. But a man needs to know his options.

I recently purchased the 56" model over the 44" model. I think it is built great for the at home, garage mechanic/tinkerer. It all came down to the drawers for me. I really wanted horizontally longer drawers, and thats what the 56" offered to me. I wanted to be able to fit two combo wrench sets (ratcheting and non), two stubby wrench sets (ratcheting and non), flare nut wrenches, and a few specialty wrenches ("S" or half moon style) all in one "wrench" drawer. Now multiply that by two, one for metric and one for fractional. I like wrenches... This was possible with the longer drawers in the 56" but not in the 44" model. However, I agree archirelic, I wouldn't be upset if one of the deeper drawers were replaced by a few shorter ones. I also find that I have what I would call wasted space in some of the deeper drawers.

A 44" with a side cabinet was just too many narrow small drawers for me. But Im with you, a 56" top chest with the same drawer layout as the bottom would be awesome!!! I put a 44" top chest on my 56" box and I just wish the wide drawers were wider like on the bottom!

I have 2 of the 7 drawer side cabinets mounted and a 26" Craftsman chest sitting on mine. The 44" was built to handle a full size top chest and side attachments. No problems with deformation what so ever on mine. As far as I know the 44" was the only box designed to carry side attachments and a top chest. Not saying the others can't but side attachments are not offered specifically for the 26" or 56". A top chest isn't even offered specifically for the "56. As I said I'm not saying the others can't handle it, just that the 44" was designed to be added to from both sides and the top.

I can post pictures this evening if you like.

I would buy the 44" over the 56", but the 56" unit is deeper (front to back) than any of the other cabinets and I want to use a pair of them as bases for my new work bench and hate wasted space behind the cabinet. I don't want to recess the cabinets either - so, I will probably pick up a pair of the 56"..
