Utility knife- favorite?

They had an offer for a free knife a couple years ago that I registered for but never got it. I bet if they had sent it to me, I would probably own several at this point, but alas, they didn't.
I don't remember ever seeing them on a shelf anywhere locally. A utility knife tends to be a spur of the moment buy for me

I know Home Depot normally sells one model of their knives, at least the ones around me do. I just picked up another one from there a few weeks ago.
Agree on the spur of the moment thing, though lol

I have one of these that I love. Fixed blade folding with a back lock (I like the idea of a pin lock too, but this back lock keeps it thinner) with a quick change blade. The blade is better secured than any of the old Stanleys I have and the toolless change is great. Mine has been with me for many years and looks a little worse for wear but has never had a problem

Dorset. England.
Stanley 99E at work and 199A at home in the shop. I buy good used of both for pennies as the older English made ones are better than current production. Must have a dozen about at least.
Have a couple of Hultafors sliding knives as well but they are heavier for no real benefit other than tool less blade changes.

Ah sorry friend! I always find them in the paint section with the scrapers, if that helps haha. Hopefully next time!

Its a Morakniv thing. You wouldn't understand.
:bounce:

I love my morakniv companion for camping, but a fixed blade knife to replace what a retractable utility knife normally does? Seems a bit odd. A useful aspect of utility knives is how thin the blade is. What do you tend to use your's for?

Another vote for the Milwaukee Fastback, specifically the 48-22-1901.

I have a couple from kobalt that I like as they are a little larger than the default Stanley, plus have a tool less blade change.

Yep, I have two. I've used the piss out of them too.

I picked one like these up from a bowl near the register at the local Ace hardware, size of my little finger, opens half a dozen boxes a week for 10 years or more, cost less than a buck. I have a couple of the folders came free in some kind of tool set, but rarely used. Gerber tool with blade and scissors is my EDC.

Tool-free blade change is nice and preferred.

Have a bunch of utility knives. To me, a utility knife has a retractable blade. Blade retracted to go in the pouch, take it out to use it and extend the blade, retract the blade and put it back in the pouch till needed next.

Have a couple folding type ones. They live in a tool chest in a workshop. Handy, but not really my faves as a "utility knife".

One of the Stanley no-tool blade change with extra blade storage in the handle is my current fave. Don't remember the model number, but I REALLY like the no-tools blade change. Beats the **** out of having to get a screwdriver and three hands to take the handle apart and flip/change the blade.

Milwaukee Fastback is my in the pocket knife. But occasionally I still revert back to my previous goto the Olaf H1 it takes the thicker snap off blades. Last time I had to buy some blades for my Milwaukee I found that Home Depot had a 2 knife and 50 blade pack that worked to to be cheaper than anything else I could see in their store for just the blades.

These “workpro” branded knives are surprisingly good. Flick out easily with no button. All smooth edges so comfortable to carry and use. Liner lock for one handed closing. Cheap enough to not worry if you lose it. They are all i use now. I’ve seen them under a few brand names but haven't been able to figure out who the OEM is.

No storage for spare blades is the only bummer

I like the original Superknife. I got one free with a purchase many years ago. It was made in the USA. They were very popular years ago. The company was bought up by Fiskars in 2005 and now Gerber moved production to China. :( I haven't tried the Gerber version but I've heard it's not as good as the original. The design has now been widely copied by many other companies.

You can sometimes find the original Superknife in new condition on Ebay. Buy one if you find one.

I’ve got the gerber model. The blade release never latches in completely. I’ve tried several different brands of blades and none make a difference.

I've been using a Milwaukee Fastback for a while now and I really like it. Much more handy than the slider type utility knives IMO.

It's also held up quite well. Locking mechanism is easy to use, smooth, and tight. Had it full of drywall dust, sawdust, etc and cleans right up and keeps working.

That the one I use. Man that thing is awesome and the Milwaukee blades are great too.

Man, it has largely replaced my retractable. Certain things that eat blades like drywall, roofing, obviously disposable blades excel. And i havent found anything better than a pipeknife for insulation. But for many other tasks, the long sharp resilient fixed blade, with the ability to take hammer blows, and take a great edge quickly with a stone has a place. It takes some getting used to, but once there, it becomes a go-to. It also helps to have the button on your pants. ;-) Not so much a US tradesman thing. Go to Scandinavia and....

I've used a Stanley 99e for decades. Still do for most jobs.

For heavier-duty work (carpet, etc) it's Stanley 10-819

I have a boatload of utility knives, they seem to accumulate.

The one in my tool pouch is an old Stanley 99

I have a 199 that I use for roofing and drywall

I keep a couple of folders in my truck, one for general purposes, and another for skinning pigs. One a Milwaukee, the other a Husky

I have a couple more 99’s in my tool chest, plus an old FatMax. Then a few X-Acto knives of various shapes and sizes.

I’m sure that there are others I cannot remember. I like to keep a sharp knife handy at all times.

Mostly Stanley in the garage, but my EDC at work is one of these Craftsman oval folders.

It has the requisite pocket clip, but is much more comfortable for pocket carry due to its shape. I also like that it will accept the thicker serrated blades. The blade changeing mechanism is simple and easy to use even with gloves. Plus you can get em fairly cheap at Sears, in the sub $4.00 range from time to time.

I've got a big collection of folders and fixed blade knives, but for the a while now I find myself leaving them behind and carrying one of these every day. Its so samall you forget about it, but handles all the mundane cutting tasks. Only wish it would take the serrated blades.

This is both my favorite utility knife and (these days) my daily carry. The MakerKnife by Giaco Whatever. It locks open until you actually pull the finger loop back, at which point a clever mechanism inside unlocks it.

It is a pleasure to use. It also doubles as a fidget toy. :)

I like the Lenox LX250 same as the Irwing FK250 but different colors. The Lenox is at Lowes.

A little on the thick side but no sharp edges in the pocket like the cheap husky and kobalt digging in your leg. Tool-less blade change. You need to look at the instructions as it is designed to not release the blade when open, it has to be at 135 degrees. It holds a couple spare blades and 2 short hex bits. My complaint is is comes with a phillips and then a robertson bit which I don't use.

Speaking of Starrett, I found a case of these at an estate sale in Berkeley. They all sold quickly on eBay. US Made unlike most modern Starrett box cutters.

Those are my favorite. Craftsman was putting their name on them for awhile too. I never did find out who the original manufacturer was.

I haven’t found anything that beats an Olfa in and out of a pouch a couple hundred times a day when doing certain jobs I can’t imagine opening a folding knife that often.
