VA Garage Gang Get-together in Fairfax

Many thanks to goodfellow for hosting this year's get together at his cool garage in Fairfax. The weather and conversation were as good as it gets.

I promised to post a list of several local makerspaces and details about the CAMS metalworking group, their CNC meetings, and email list. Since the message was too long to post in the NoVA Social Group I'll revive this dormant local thread.

Hopefully others will find these useful.

Chesapeake Area Metalworking Society (CAMS) http://cams-club.org/

Founded in 1999 Chesapeake Area Metalworking Society is a useful resource for metalworking enthusiasts and machinists near DC interested in meeting others and sharing projects and experiences at monthly meetings that alternate between Annandale, VA and Burtonsville, MD (http://cams-club.org/meeting/)

In addition to the monthly general meetings, CAMS also has an active special interest groups for CNC enthusiasts. The meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month in Lorton, VA and are listed both on the CAMS website and on meetup.com (https://www.meetup.com/NoVA-CAD-Meetup-Group/)

Even if unable to travel to the local meetings the CAMS email list is a rich source of help and ideas. Digest mode is suggested for first-time subscribers. (http://cams-club.org/listserv/)

Once a year in September or early October CAMS holds a 'yard sale' which can be a great place to buy or sell machine tools, tooling, and related equipment. The dates are announced on the email list and posted on the web site.(http://cams-club.org/events/yardsale2016.html)

I've been a member of GJ for years but never noticed this thread. I'm in Fredericksburg with a 2 car garage full of mostly metal working tools (and some machine tools in the basement). Also have a 1924 Ford Touring Car that I need to get back on the road.

Ndnchief - love the car! Also want to learn more about your craftsman lathe with qctp.

I'm in Warrenton.

Thanks - it's a neat old car, but it's been sitting for a couple years. It needs a little work, but nothing serious. I just need more time!

What can I tell you about the lathe?

My lathe is an Atlas 12x24. The QCTP is a Phase II AXA size. It is a big improvement over the old rocker post. It is much more solid. I have a number of extra tool holders for it so I can have them dedicated to specific tooling. Here is one I have dedicated to a dial indicator specifically for dialing in a 4 jaw chuck. It is a great upgrade for any old lathe.

Hello from Aldie, VA.

Just saw this thread. Thought I give a kick start. I live in Aldie and did a garage addition to my home back in 2016. Three floors but only the garage level is complete. Using the upper levels for storage and a workshop. Here are a few pics of my build.

That's a great space, Dudley!
Checking in from Vienna...
I have a 20x21 2-car space that I have been renovating for about 4 years. LOL.
I'd be interested in attending a meet but still a ways away from being able to host something. Too many projects and not enough time in the day.

Checking in garage-less from Marshall VA.

Currently planning either a 3 car attached, or larger detached garage for our farmhouse.

Does anyone have any good builder referrals in the area?

I'm in Warrenton.

Here is my barn project. Still a work in progress. Started out as a simple shed concept using some free trusses but has evolved a bit.

It is 26' wide and 24' deep. The garage portion has 10' ceiling and the lean to portion is 9'. Garage door will be 8x8. I will likely build carriage doors like several on this site have done. Still need to run electric service to it, finish exterior trim, wire, etc. It's a slow going weekend project as time permits.

It will serve to drain the overflow from the house garage so I can use that for my cars. The garage portion hopefully will also serve as a paint booth some time in the future when my cars get to that point.

I drew my own very limited plans and submitted them with no issues. I do build homes for a living so this has been very straight forward.

Been lurking here for a while. Figured its about time to join in. I'm in northern Virginia near Winchester. Moved here from Sterling a couple years ago when I decided I needed space to build a garage. Its done now, except for the final grading outside the garage.
I should mention that the only car in all these pics that is mine, is the blue Coronet. The others belong to my friends.

Weather has turned cold here in Virginia, but still able to go out and play in the garage. This will be my first winter with the new garage. Might actually get some things done on the cars over the winter this year.

Wow, great shop. Really like all that space. Unfortunately, I think I would feel lonely way out there...lol

Hey all - figured I'd bump this up. Are there any Northern VA or surrounding area recommendations for someone to install a high light garage system + Liftmater jackshaft garage opener?

A good friend of mine, Jon Harrison, owns his own business doing all kinds of home projects. He and I knocked out my garage door installation. I also had high lift conversions on both of my doors. My project scope "shifted" during install as we had to replace all the framing around my doors. Great work, very reasonable pricing.

I've been a lurker here for a while, but am finally trying to build a detached garage/shop so I can finally get a 2 post full size lift. I'm not that knowledgeable about construction at all and am hoping to educate myself here and elsewhere. Biggest challenge at the moment is settling on where to put it and figuring out whether the Fairfax County ordinances will be a problem. I don't think so, but still have a bit to learn. I'll probably start my own build thread soon. Hoping to do a 24x30 with room for a 12 foot lift storing one additional car next to the lift (30' will be lengthwise). Aside from setback requirements, does anyone know what limitations Fairfax County might put on the type of building? For example, are there limitations on steel buildings, pole barns, etc.? Thanks!

Did this thread just die?
Hopefully not dead, but definitely dormant. Thanks for bumping it up, I've been here a while but have never seen the thread.

I'm near Ashburn and would be interested in reviving the thread and maybe starting some meet ups. Typically when I see someone here mention they're in VA/NOVA I follow their profile, so my following list is probably a decent partial directory of active members in the area.
