Which valve lash adjusting wrench do you like for adjusting solid lifters? Thanks.

There are many styles of tappet wrenches, some specific to the motor. What motor are you referring to?

What about a regular off set end box wrench? I use those on the solid lifters of my air cooled VW - just last night even!

I can't find the one I use online. It has a 1/2" drive so I can use different size sockets and it has a hand knob on the top attached to the adjustment driver that was throught the center of the 1/2" drive (I can't remeber if it is just a bit driver or if the bit is attached). It was made for a specific application so I could see the bit not being easily swapped. It was nice since both wrench for the lock nut and the driver for the adjustment was in one unit. It came as part of a tool set for the engine otherwise I would have just used a box end wrench and an allen wrench.

Then I use a dial indicator to check the adjustment.

This one? I use it on my MGA and MG Midget. It is OK, but I usually end up double-checking with a feeler gauge.

Box wrench and an Allen wrench for overhead valves. Just a wrench for a flat head(they lock themselves with friction).

Most people who complain about them backing off on thier chevy V8 are just doing it wrong. If you adjust the lash with a wrench and simply try to lock it with the Allen wrench they will loosen up in a week or two. What you do is adjust the lash with the wrench and tighten the Allen down snug then you back the wrench off 1/4 turn while still holding the Allen snug, then you tighten both the wrench and Allen wrench by 1/4 turn at the same time to lock everything down together. They stay put that way. Be sure to re check the lash after the adjustment.

The other trick we used to do was to put a little sillycone on the rocker cover side of the gasket but not the cylinder head side of the gasket. That way is stays glued to the valve cover when you pull it off. You can use the gasket over and over.
