Are these any good? Or some as seen on TV gimmick?

I bought them awhile back and the one time I used them they worked like a charm. A neighbor of mine made leather high end collars for pets and some of the studs she used screwed on. She used loctite on the threads and on one particular collar it was sent back to her for repairs and she needed to replace the studs or something. She tried pliers to remove them but no go. I used these pliers and off like a charm and no marring the leather.

Are these (still) made in Japan?

Aka the epically cheasy "Neji-saurus":

They've even got a cartoon and song, complete with jingle: http://engineer.jp/video/urusu_song_pv.wmv

I guess vampires are more suitable for the North American market? FYI - they won the 2009 Good Design Award. Among many others.

Here is a more detailed video/commercial (cue the reality television soundtrack):

I like how it's a lovely Vessel screwdriver they show making a mess of the fastener!

In all seriousness though, I wonder if these are as good as the Merry pliers that I've wanted for a while from Levelchrome: http://www.levelchrome.com/Merry-ZA185-185mm-73-Power-Plier_p_343.html

Well, I ordered a pair simply due to prior situations where I could have used this tool.

Thanks!

Ordered from amazon, I like the green handles better than the red. I do like the vampliers name though. Thanks again for spending more of my hard earned not really available to buy tools money.

Does anyone know where to get a good deal on the Merry pliers? After reading through this thread, I think that's the ticket.

21.00 free shipping on Amazon for sames ones in green, made by same mfg

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002L6HJAA/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Do the green ones from Amazon come with the cover (like the red ones that just arrived at my house)?

For spring-loaded pliers it's kind of useful to have the cover to hold them closed in the drawer. Amazon sells the cover separately for $7, which is a LOT for a little bit of elastomer. It's not clear that this piece comes with the green pliers as shown.

I gotta say these are a terrific little pair of pliers! Flawless tool, as one would expect from Japanese production. Perfect jaw alignment. The grips feel good -- a bit soft, and therefore a bit sticky in the hand. They look plasticy in the photos but feel rubbery in the hand.

Interstingly, the jaws do not come fully together. The cutter does, of course, but the jaws are made to stay about 0.5 - 1 mm apart at the tips.

These are gonna get used a lot, I think.

Thanks for the alert to the deal, frugalscotty.

I decided on the Lobster pliers because of their size, which to me gives them the greatest leverage. They have cutters and are apparently the longest of the screw removal/extraction pliers; Amazon lists them as being 10.3 inches long. The $27.25 price at frank's tools is awesome: :

Makapuu,

You will enjoy using the Lobster pliers. I heard that it is a good choice among the screw extraction pliers.

The model ZP200NA is not 10.3 inches long. 210mm long is equal to approximately 8.25 inches. You're right that this Lobster model is the longest of all screw extraction pliers.

I have the Engineer version of these pliers... I like the green handle over the red handle of the VamPliers, but they're both the same thing... they work very well but the grooved tips are a little soft so after a couple of uses, the grooves are already mashed down... you would think they would have hardened the steel better

in any case, there is an optional cover from Engineer to keep the pliers from opening, making it easier to store... it's PZM-58 and I got it from Amazon for under 7 bucks.... you can get it off ebay too of course

I'm using my VamPliers more than I expected, and I thought they'd be used a lot. They're a superb tool. In rebuilding old stained glass windows in the house before winter I've had to pull multiple nails from sash frame, glazing, old weatherstripping, old brickmold...

The VamPliers have gotten hold of things nail pullers and Snap-on needle nose pliers wouldn't, and they simply don't let go once you've got something. I love 'em.

My red pair have the cover over the jaws, which is a useful accessory because it keeps the spring-loaded pliers closed when being stored and transported.

Highly recommended tool.

I think you guys are all pretty funny! I've been using old US Petersen Vice Grips to do everything this thing does for about 30 years now! Are you all sure this is so much better? Anyone test all the different options together to remove nails/screws for comparison? - Paul
