VCT: How to handle raised area?

I've been contemplating VCT for a while, but the one issue that keeps me from pulling the trigger is that I have a raised area, about a 4" step, that runs the length of the garage.

The face of the step is fairly smooth, but not perfectly perpendicular the the plane of the floor.

How would I tile this area?

How would I protect the edge?

Can you post any pics of the areas. I saw a few pics on here somewhere, where a guy used the vct to go up the base of the wall a little but, not sure if it was a ledge or not though... you might could use some type of rubber stair molding for the edge of it... need pics for better idea of what you got goin on.

I think I would shim and sheet, in some sort of plywood. You should be able to square it up then. Make sure to put a bull nose on the ledge or they will break.

If the step is 4" or less, you can use a rubber or vinyl toe-type base like you see in commercial buildings for the vertical face or cut VCT to fit. I would use a rubber nosing to protect the exposed upper edge. Mannington is one manufacturer.
