Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

@bagged89s10 doesn't sound like a bad problem to have! Thanks for the Vidmar shout out!

Linda, unfortunately I already sold the cabinet as it just won't fit in my small garage. :(
At least I can say I owned one and know why they are so sought after. They are definitely the most well built tool/drawer cabinets I've put my hands on.

The Little Vintage Garage.

So yesterday I went to an estate sale to pick up 2 large vises. Got a Parker 975 and a columbian 607.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1443833902.722507.jpg
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1443833917.962708.jpg

But while I was looking at the Parker at the estate sale, there was a Duro drill press right next to it. What are the odds of finding one with the pulley I need for my Duro drill press. I was pumped.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1443834032.301546.jpg
So I can finally get my drill press back together without having to machine another pulley to fit.
I got the good pulley off the donor drill press.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1443834088.832004.jpg
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1443834096.769280.jpg
It's a very uncommon pulley as the major and minor splines are not equal. I got the pulley onto my drill press and now I just need to install the motor and switch. Ok going to use the motor off the donor machine as well.
While I was doing that, I had to dig out the original motor and motor bracket. It was buried in a pile of vises and motors so I had a thought. I moved my vises and motors which were in and on top of this cart.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1443834732.303497.jpg
Now they are in the cabinet under my drill press.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1443834759.033995.jpg
This is a much better storage space and use of the cabinet. It was just filled with stuff that I didn't find a home for.

Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

Oh and today I found another Duro product. Check out this socket set which includes square drive sockets.

Anyone know what these slotted sockets are for?

I would think that one in the top middle on the last picture is for taking off external threaded nuts inside of an internally threaded tube. I don't know the name but have run into them in the past and have always just used a punch to get them out. Hope that is right and/or helps.

Man you are on fire with the cool finds...

Thanks, I went to a sale this morning but there was nothing. The rain didn't help as I think a lot of sales were cancelled. Not that I need to buy any thing else right now. I actually have to go through a
Couple boxes of hand tools I have acquired recently and figure out what I'm keeping and liquidate the rest.

Look at this cool old socket set I picked up yesterday. I have no need for this and will sell it.

Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

This morning I worked on my drill press for a little bit. I bought this switch for it.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1443924923.850731.jpg
And I think I'll be able to attach this lamp off the switch box. The lamp was a free side of the road find a little while ago.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1443925044.381770.jpg
I just need to figure out he best way to mount the switch box.
I also started taking the donor machine apart so I can see learn how to take everything sort without breaking it. I have no idea how to get the quill out right now. This is where I'm at.

Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

That Duro is pretty close to the same as my old Montgomery Ward press. From there you take the dial off of the handle side with an Allen set screw I believe then it pulls out of the other side. Then the quill will drop out of the bottom. My chuck was screwed on and I had to put a big Allen wrench into it and hold the top shaft of the quill carefully and it would twist off. I may have some pictures of mine in my thread. Hope this helps and I hope yours is the same way.

I just put up a cabinet to store some cleaning supplies, etc. it was in my basement, and I have 4 more which I'm going to put on the opposite wall. I didn't bother painting it right now. Temporarily clamped up a light for now, but I really like he location of it. I'll have to make a nice permanent mount for it. I'm also adding more outlets, just have to get around to it.

I'm sure she thinks we're all crazy. Haha. Post your vises up on the "vises of garage journal thread."

Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

Yesterday I found some low profile wheels for my paint baking oven. I got these roller ball wheels from Harbor freight for around $1 each. They only add 1-1/8" so I can store the oven under my bench where I like it. Not the best wheels but it does the trick. I just drilled out one hole to 1/4" to fit. The wheels are tight and not moving. I might drill another hole to avoid bending anything but it's light duty so it's probably fine as is.

Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

Just saw this thread. Looking at your garage reminds me of my parents knotty pine kitchen. Exact same cabinets from the early 50's era. My dad also finished a 30X60 basement in tongue and groove knotty pine boards, knotty pine 15 foot bar and all knotty pine cabinets in his workshop. After 60 years, dated but solid as a rock.

Yeah are nicely built cabinets. They were built into the kitchen and I'm glad I was able to take them out and save most of them.

Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

Little vise work the last few nights. Parker 974 out of the e-tank and coated with BLO. This time I have a deposit on this one. Going to be the same finish as the last one I sold.

Mirror shine but still some deep scratches so I need to re-sand these. I might have to start with my 36 grit flap wheel first.

Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

So I did a little organizing. It's really been bothering me not having a proper place to store my pry bars. So I remember having a set of closet tie racks. They work perfect. All I didn't want bend the top row or hooks and I fit all my pry bars. I hung them on the side of my small bench.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1444365961.985724.jpg
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1444365969.389945.jpg
I also hung my levels and rulers on the left side of the cabinet I hung up a few days ago.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1444366033.605174.jpg
Then I found these which I had been looking for since spring. Everyone needs to have a set to get out slivers.

It's a sliver gripper. To get wood and metal slivers/splinters out of you hands or skin.

Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

Got some vise painting and garage cleaning done. I don't know the last time I could see both sides of my workbench.
I always seem to use too much tape. This time I tried to carefully cut the masking tape to minimize waste.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1444845098.450006.jpg
2 coats of paint and 1 coat of clear baked before and after each. It's amazing how much better warm metal accepts paint versus cold metal.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1444845355.895567.jpg
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1444845363.765850.jpg

Cleaned my benches. Now just need to get proper electrical wired, find a place for my fan on the wall/ceiling, and get my drill press together.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1444845506.854099.jpg
I also put down a mat in the bench. Not sure if I will like it or not. We'll see.

Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

Looks fantastic, well done.

I agree with 1/2 Cup!

thanks fellas.

This guy is fresh out of the oven. Same color as the last one. Just need to finish polishing the jaws and handle before Sunday's pickup time.

The mat comes in handy for finish work or stuff you don't want scratched up. It's from Home Depot.
My Attempt to replace a screen on a tablet.

Of course I only ordered the screen and not the screen and lcd digitizer. Slight delay

More good work there bagged... Thanks for sharing some of your resto techniques.

I've picked up a couple of vises now so am going to have a go at setting up an e-bath too when I can scurry away some time from the honey do's.

Patience putting your tab back together, they are fiddly buggers.

Cheers Grumblebum.

Re: The Little Vintage Garage.

What is the story behind that anvil? It is way smaller than many I've seen before. Also I learned the hard way on not replacing the digitizer myself and now always order both.
JB

I think the anvil is a Jewelers anvil. :dunno: I got it from my father. It works for beating on small stuff. I ordered both this time. Oh well, only an $12 mistake.

After I finish this vise I need to button up some honey do's and fall/pre winter house/ yard work. Sometimes I wish I lived in a warmer area.

It's super slow at work this month which hurts the paycheck, but means a little more time for projects.

I did a little midnight buffing last night.
