I'd vote either of the first two options. The gloss black doesn't thrill me, in my mind. Maybe it'd look better when I saw it.

Started cleanup on the lathe. I’m disassembling everything to degreasing it from the old hardened grease.

First step is to remove the pulleys off the countershaft. The cheap puller I bought from eBay does the job.

Soaked them in my simple green tank and they cleaned right up.

Now the countershaft on the lathe was shortened so the motor could be mounted under the lathe. That was a good idea but it makes the drive pulley too far back.

Here is the shortened countershaft.
IMG_7151.jpg

Here is the replacement I found on eBay with the correct motor mount.
IMG_7045.jpg

Joel from mymachineshop.net has also been helping me get the other parts I need. I actually got a motor mount from him before I knew I needed a new countershaft. I also got a top guard and bracket, and parts to repair the tailstock.

With the top guard on you can see how low the pulley was because the countershaft was shortened.
IMG_6981.jpg

The old tailstock handle was butchered up because the screw for the quill was broken off at the end.
IMG_7027.jpg

The new parts are much better.
IMG_7158.jpg

The rest of the tailstock is in my simple green tank to get stripped. It’s one of the few parts that need new paint. It’s been in there for 2 days and the paint is starting to peel.

Here the headstock is almost disassembled.
IMG_7150.jpg
The quick change gear box off.
IMG_7155.jpg
The feed gears off.
IMG_7153.jpg
The back gear off.
IMG_7162.jpg

The chuck was stuck but I got it off. According to the previous owner, the chuck was never removed after he bought the lathe years ago. I let some 50/50 acetone/transmission penetrating fluid soak overnight and it actually came off easier than I thought it would. Then I used a wooden 2x4 scrap to help. Chucked up the piece of wood, spun clockwise and let the wood hit the back of the bed. If you do this just make sure you have all the gears disengaged so you don’t damage anything. The soft wood won’t damage the lathe bed or ways.
IMG_7172.jpg

Then I took off this collar. It was really on there but after using the same penetrating fluid, I took out the set screw and bolted in a 3” bolt in its place for leverage.
IMG_7174.jpg

As it sits, the gear behind the collar I took off is really tight. I don’t want to risk breaking it trying to remove it so I have penetrating fluid working in it and then I will use my puller to remove it.

The quick change gear chart cleaned up nicely.
IMG_7182.jpg

Cleaned up a few parts of the feed gear tumbler assembly.

IMG_7183.jpg

The gears are soaking in simple green to get the gunk out of the teeth.

I wiped down part of the lathe bed and the paint is beautiful under the grease.

Took me almost 2 years to find the arbor press I wanted and finally got one. I was bidding on a similar one which went over my budget real quick and I was bummed. Then 2 days later i found this for $160. Famco 3-1/2R 5 ton ratcheting arbor press with stand. My finds keep getting heavier. Shipping weight on their catalog says 320 for the press and 225 for the stand.

I just have to take it apart as it seems stuck in the down position .

I also think I found the origin my lathe stand legs. Looks like they might be from a Famco or similar door press.

Fast forward a month and a half later. More garage reorganization and the lathe is completely disassembled and most parts are degreased and cleaned.

Looks a little tight in there. But super organized. Very nice job of packing 10# in a 5# bag. I couldn't do it.

honestly i’ve been really busy. I just haven’t posted on here. I end up posting more on instagram. That last pic is my new logo for instagram, youtube, and facebook. I’ve been working on a lot of projects. delta 6x48 belt sander, unisaw, a few vises, and reorganized a lot of my shop. I just picked up these legs for my craftsman atlas 12” lathe. It’s funny, I thought my lathe had a 48” bed but it turns out it’s a 54” model. I never actually measured it until now because i need to make a new wood top and a shelf for this stand.

Following now on IG, that is a nice size for a wood lathe.

JB

i’m going to make a new longer maple top and shelf for it so I can mount my 12x54 craftsman atlas lathe on it.

So I finally got to use my unisaw. Cut some cherry and hard maple to make a cutting board. My first cutting board or panel glue up. Hopefully it turns out as planned and my wife should be happy as a cutting board is on her Christmas wish list. No better time than a few days before Christmas to start a build project of something i’ve never done before. First time using a jointer and first time glueing up a panel. Tomorrow I should be able to use my planer for the first time too. It’s a surprise so it makes it a little harder to work on it.

My first panel glue up done. Had a slight wobble, so I built a planer sled to shim the high corner and also ensure there isn’t snipe. So planed, trimmed, sanded, and finished with tried and true original wood finish which is just linseed oil and beeswax. No petroleum based products or solvents in it. Calling it done. No time to do anything fancy in the time crunch. Next project will be better and i’ll try to find the correct router bits to do a better round over and a bit to cut a juice groove. I learned a lot of woodworking and milling teqniques on this build. I’ve basically never jointed, planed, or glued up more than 2 pieces of wood before. I am also extremely happy I got a unisaw, although I need to build an over arm dust collector for it. My garage is covered in saw dust right now. Wife should still be happy with this I hope. I mean it is the nicest cutting board she’s owned since i’ve known her. [emoji4]

So i’ve been parting out my craftsman table saw since they are really hard to sell. No need for it since I got myself a unisaw. I finally took the rest of it apart and I took the cast iron top and bolted it to the stand to made a perfect stand for my Dewalt planer. I might use the bottom of the stand as a makeshift dust separator. The blower on the planer along with portable dust collector does a great job but the bag fills up quick planing boards. I’m not a big newer tool guy but this is the newest tool in the shop. I think I need to throw some fresh black paint on the cart frame now.
