Vevor Tools - Deaths Lawsuits

I came across this article this morning and thought you all might be interested!

Chinese seller on Amazon sold ‘defective’ tools linked to deaths, life-changing injuries: lawsuits

Vevor's slogan is, "Tough Tools, Half Price". When it comes to purchasing safety-oriented tools, my slogan is: "Is my life worth half price?"

I have to admit I have purchased a small number of generic-branded import tools (including Vevor), but only for tools that are not likely to cause serious injury if they catastrophically fail.

Isn't that website known for less then factual "news"?

the load binder throws me off.

1. Not the place to save money
2. How was he hanging off it to fall so catastrophically when it broke?

I wonder how true it actually is. The article states a car jack but shows jack stands. Was the person actually using jack stands? Because I wouldn't really trust even a "reliable" car jack without some extra support. But jack stands generally far exceed their stated rating. It says the chain snapped when using the "Vevor chain load binder" but does that mean the binder is the issue or the chain that snapped?

Their safety harnesses do look questionable to me. But it does not seem they'd have any sort of certification. He was 40 feet up in the air on those things. However again - did it actually break, or did he do something stupid like cut it with a chainsaw?

All these jobs are of the type where people get hurt all the time due to stupidity. I wouldn't necessarily blame Vevor for offering tools that can break... Really depends what was going on in each of those situations.

I'm not going to click on a link to that spammy, sensationalist piece of **** website.

The media and the internet in general love to sensationalize this kind of thing, and the devil is in the details. I'm not absolving Vevor at all, but I'm also not going to trust a website like that to give me information vs. the sizzle they think drives clicks.

I just read the rest of the article, the family of the truck driver is suing the ship manufacturer that owns the site the accident occurred at as well....

And the "jack" is clearly a pipe stand

I don't follow the news and only came across that link incidentally. I assume that every single "news" website is accused by some faction of the population of being fake/spammy/sensationalist. Sorry if I posted an offensive link.

Interestingly, it looks like that website in the OP is the only news link covering the story (at least according to a google news search). I'm not sure if that makes them spammy and sensationalist or if that makes them genuine investigative journalists. I'm not smart enough to suss out the difference.

For an alternate source, I see that a well-known YouTuber has also covered this story for anyone interested.

Practically every “major news site” has published a large amount of factually incorrect or poorly researched articles at this point.

The news article sites the cases and names, if you want to do further research on any of the cases.

It’s common in lawsuits to sue everyone with a decently sized wallet.
It’s sometimes referred to as the “Deep Pockets Principle”, and it is an established legal principle.

Well... to be fair, the New York Post does not exactly have the most stellar reputation in the world of news outlets. I'd rank them somewhere down in the bottom two or three inches of the barrel (lower if it's a small barrel.)

That said, it would appear from various articles not related to these two incidents that "Vevor" has some issues:
Vevor violates sellers terms of use on Amazon platform
YouTube video from "Den of Tools"
Consumer Safety Products Commission recalls Vevor "Baby Gates"
UK Office for Safety and Standards destroys Vevor products at border to prevent their entry into country
Motion Pro Inc. vs. Vevor patent infringement suit
TikTokkers hate Vevor

I find it difficult to accept the notion that a 49-year-old owner of a trucking company didn't know how to properly use a chain binder.

The jack stand deal.... I can't comment on because of the number of jacks and jack stands and car ramps I've seen returned as "warranty" that were clearly caused by improper use or just plain stupidity. (You do not drive a 1962 Buick Invicta up onto a set of $19.99 car ramps in a gravel driveway - they were both flat as a pancake when the guy brought them back in.)

Sounds to me like a prudent person would avoid "Vevor" like it was the plague.

YMMV

UHaul has been the victim of at least two of these types of suits - neither of which were actually the company's fault.
That's why you cannot rent a UHaul trailer if you tell theym you're hooking it up to a Ford Explorer.

Yeah, maybe it shouldn’t be a legal principle, but it is.
Since it is an established principle, if a lawyer doesn't at least present the option to clients, then that lawyer could possibly be sued for improper legal counsel.

Part of the issue with renting or selling equipment, is you will inevitably be renting or selling the equipment to people who have no clue about proper use or safety of that equipment.
If you advise someone wrongly on usage, or they indicate to you they will use the equipment improperly, it can shift the legal burden onto the entity renting out the equipment.

We use a ton of Vevor tools at work and I have to say, they’ve been holding up as shop tools in a heavy duty truck shop. I wouldn’t buy them myself but I’ve been pleasantly surprised.

That is a really bad design for a jack stand, isn't it? That just doesn't look right at all.

I mean if somebody said "hey look, this jack stand is collapsible" you'd laugh. But it is.

I will echo the confusion about what actual product failed. It seems the author of the article was not knowledgeable on that, which is a common issue. Then again, most journalists don't moonlight as mechanics. This of course is assuming that the article was not A.I. generated, or politically motivated in some way.

However, I'd be hesitant to buy offerings from this brand or any brand of jack, stands, or related equipment that isn't well known to me already. I have a policy of asking myself "if this breaks, will it kill me?" that has so far worked very well.

I feel like all companies that sell this kind should be compelled to adhere to some kind of ISO or ANSI standards. If they don't list that anywhere, then it's an automatic "no" for me. If it is shown prominently on the label/packaging, then it is a good sign.

That said, even good brands can make a bad product, or have defective materials. It's best to have some kind of backup, like ramps, blocks, or tires to "catch" a vehicle if the stand fails. (as an example.) Just assume it will break, eventually.

How does anyone sue Vevor when there’s no corporate office or headquarters? Vevor has been sued more times than I can remember, no one can find who Vevor is. It’s clearly coming from China.

Looks like the usual Internet gold

The idiot is using a Vevor chain binder to tighten the chain so tight that the chain breaks making him fall off the load

They’re suing Vevor and the shipping company where he was loading or unloading

It's not inconceivable that the chains were supplied by the yard he was picking up from. If that's the case, they probably have liability for providing a defective product.

Without the complete story its impossible to say who is in the wrong. Was it used right or was it faulty?

I've seen people wear a safety harness and have a harness tether that was longer than the fall to ground. People use chain blocks and slings at insane angles and have them twisted and knotted up. Slings with cuts and soaked in oil. Shackles that lost the clevis pin and have a bolt instead. Engine hoists that people drilled to make it go further out.

I also think anything you genuinely need to rely on should probably be the thing you spend money on from an actually reputable company.

^ quoted for truth.

WE weren't there. We don't know the details.

The language used in the article does not make clear at all what actually occurred. And is that a "Jack Stand" or a "Pipe Stand"?
Doesn't look like any "Jack Stand" I ever sold or used.

The binder.... as I said, I find it difficult to believe that a 49-year-old owner of a trucking company doesn't know how to use one.
The chain broke.
When was the last time you broke a chain?

Aside from all that, if you watch a few of the "Den of Tools" videos, and do a bit of digging, you will find that this company:
- has repeatedly changed the name and address of the company
- been the defendant in multiple copyright, trademark, and patent infringement suits - and it looks like they're losing all of them (although I'm only got to about page 5 of the Google search results and got distracted with something else.)
- has had several of their products recalled by the Consumer Products Safety Commission (like BABY GATES)
- had at least three tool items banned in the UK because they are "unsafe"
- repeatedly games the system on Amazon by listing items, then removing the listing when the item gets negative reviews, then re-listing it until it gets positive reviews.

I'm just digging around so I can try to figure out WHICH name and WHICH address to enter into the list. I stopped about an hour ago so I could eat and then got distracted with something else so this is all I have thus far:

====

Vevor Corporation (2015)

Yanping Wang

Vevor Store Inc. (2021)

Sanven Corporation

Vevor Inc., 4255 S. Buckley Rd. #1316, Aurora, CO 80013 /

Motion Pro Inc. vs. Vevor Inc. patent infringement on patent 9731565 and D721566 complaint filed 12/16/21
^ THIS suit is a slam-dunk. This is clear and deliberate theft of intellectual property (patents.)

Shanghai Sishun E-Commerce Co., Ltd.
5th Floor, Building Block 6, Jinshjiang West Road, Jiading District, Shanghai, Chinna

Sihao Pty Ltd., t/a Vevor Australia

A couple hours ago I shotgunned out an email to everyone on my "personal" (friends and relatives) email list and told them "Do NOT buy any VEVOR" products.

YMMV

If it's the kit I've seen, it comes with a binder and a chain. I wouldn't expect a newspaper to get that detail right. It was the unexpected breaking that was the problem, no doubt. (as for breaking a chain, I've broken lots of them. None with a load binder, but by pulling with a truck, tractor, or winch. It's usually the hook attachment that gives out first, but I've snapped a couple in the middle. )

Got the Vevor chimney sweeper, ultrasonic cleaner and their milling machine vise (Kurt knockoff). I find those to work very well and am happy with them.

I agree, I'm not sure if I'd use the stuff that can harm you. Then again, very often people are very reckless. I think it is very obvious when the stands or the harness is made of really poor quality but some people just have the mentality that "if the product placement says it does something, it surely will do it" without second guessing it.

Thread is TLDR.....but I'll just point out that Vevor does not make any tools. At all. They resell tools built by a variety of other Chinese tool manufacturers.

So if you're complaining about Chinese quality, then take the time to Google the manufacturer of the tools you're complaining about so you're pissed at the proper company. Good luck figuring that out!

Had a handyman style jack break while using it - TORIN Big Red. Luckily I did not get injured, but it was the last Chinese handyman jack I will every buy - of any brand. Flawed castings on it. Probably came from the same factory as some of the VEVOR stuff

There is a place for cheap tools, but not all cheap tools have a place

The only Vevor tool I have is a vinyl cutter. Honestly I'm impressed for the $129 dollars I spent. I was convinced it was a scam, but it showed up and it works. I'm in the group that would never buy no name knock of safety equipment, but there is definitely a place for single use cheap tools.

Had a Reese fail repeatedly, dropping the load suddenly. It went straight to the scrap pile. Getting replaced with a real Hi-Lift, and in the time being, my old Simplex railroad jacks, despite looking like ****, still get the job done safely.

it's like old school harbor freight IMO so it's a crapshoot. They'll take all trinkets from all makers and maybe slowly phase out ****** products. I've generally had OK luck....thought for critical applications, maybe not the wisest choice.

Not at all. That is not at all the case in this instance.
You may have noticed I made a recommendation earlier on a Chinese-made wrench set. Also ordered one for myself.

It's the company - it's a sketchy outfit. I've cited the articles above. (post #10) Proceed at your own risk - you're not spending my money.

Yep, I proceeded to acquire quite a few used ones in the next year. Old but solid
Bit of cleaning and liquid graphite and they work well

That's partly why I've held off on a new one. I'm going to see what I can get my hands on locally. Rural King had them on sale a couple months back for $70, but they didn't keep them in stock.

Doubtful they quality test everything.

Still on the fence about this a a great price. Guess I'd have to keep an eye on it during gen operation anyway. :rolleyes2

The signs in front of McDonald's used to say they sold billions and billions of hamburgers.
That doesn't necessarily equate to them being any good.

If you read the complaints on the patent infringment suits, you will see that it's quite clear they make a practice of stealing intellectual property.

And yes, there are dozens and dozens and dozens of websites where people are raving about how wonderful their products are.
There are also dozens and dozens of websites where people are expressing their regret for having purchased items from them.

^ Yes, it most certainly is.
I am only offering MY lousy opinion based on what I spent the better part of a day reading. I will never buy anything from them - ever.
What other people choose to spend their money on is none of my business.
