I need a VFD for my new Bridgeport mill. The mill is a 1hp 220V 3ph motor and I only have 1ph at home. Many people on Practical Machinist recommend the Teco FM50 for this application. I found a second TECO drive for not much more money and was wondering if anyone can tell me if there are any advantages over the FM50. As near as I can tell the difference seems to be a dial vs. buttons for frequency control.

This is the FM50:

Have you though about calling TECO and asking them?

TECO is a good drive. The one with the dial would be a little better for mounting up at the head. If you are going to mount in an enclosure and run a remote then the push button model would be better

I'd probably get the one with the dial. I bought one of the huanyang chicom specials, and it works fine, but it's got the push buttons on it. I can hook up an remote potentiometer, but it would have been nice to have it right on the vfd itself

Teco are good drives. I've got 3 (mill, lathe, drill press) they have built in potentiometers, but on the mill I use a remote pot. Mine are FM-100
