So what's the answer on value? I know nothing about truly old tools either. How much would a set of Starletts or Mossbergs from 1910's, 20's run? Do they have "real" value or are they more novelty items ie, worth less than a set of modern Craftsman?

I never saw the Snap On bike episode but did Snap On give the OCC crew shinny new tool boxes like Craftsman gave them? I'm just curious?

I was not involved in the contract negotiations but the term Product Placement comes to mind when it comes to the Snap-on products that were seen in the show.

I would guess if you bought that from the right place it would run $10 maybe $20, without the case. Good thing about that old neat stuff it is dirt cheap. I have a ton of old useless and very cool stuff I got for free or dirt cheap. Helps add the Sanford and Son feel to my house.

Yes, 10 to 20 dollars at the most. If someone had a first version snap on set, it would very easy sell for a thousand. I would pay that much for one, along with several other collectors I know.

Those have got to be the gayest looking shoes I have ever seen. Someone at Nike needs a quick swift kick to the nuts. They can even use those shoes to do it with...

I don't think we should be insulting people here. That is not the purpose of this forum. We all have some delusions about ourselves and our belongings. That is just part of human nature. Bottom line is that I enjoyed the pics and some of us learned something about older tools.

+1

Hear, hear!

I know my vintage SpeedMaster sockets are the best in the world, even the 13/16th deep that's cracked from over torque!

(Reality: they're so so, but they're still my favorite!)

now thats funny right there.....

almost as funny as anyone believing that snap on would pay to display starrett sockets. hell they won't even pay (or buy) forsnap on tools to be displayed, they expect them to be donated.

edit: mr. nibbs spent 15 minutes watching his creation here and had nothing to say........

I have a set of early Mossberg sockets and female reversible ratchet in the original box that look very similar. Yes, they did split if you put too much torque on them. As far as value, I value that set at $75 cause that's what I'd take for them. Huge bragging rights when I show them off. Are they worth $75? To me yes cause I wouldn't take less for them. To any one else, who knows. I haven't seen any at the auctions I go to but have seen and bought Early SO 9/32's tools so I don't know how plentiful they are. The OP's set has no ratchet and my ratchet has a patent date of 1913. Since SO started in 1920, I doubt they are SO. I think the dude was fishing for a bite, but who knows.

At one time SO was asking for donations for their museum. I asked if they would send me some copies of the rare catalogs they have. They said "we do not send out copies of our catalogs". But heck, they wanted me to donate my tools.

I beg to differ. He may have been hoping to find someone really greedy on the site willing to buy them so they could cash in on that $1000 a month. Let's review:

1. "i was approached by snap-on to put it on display and be paid a thousand dollars a month" = "I've already got a cash cow setup with Snap On"

2. "i wanna know if the tools i have is worth much more for the collector's to buy" = "I'm willing to unload these babies quick!"

3. Even if he was approached by Snap On as he claims, why would he turn down what is essentially FREE MONEY to RENT something he obviously is not using, has no use for, and has no idea what its worth? Because he wants to make some lucky collector very happy?

dude this set of sockets belong to my father he bought in a fleamarket from an old fart that said it was a pre-snap-on, before the 1920's snap-on. being a mechanic himself and owning a auto shop in he bought it ...brought it back to nyc which he ask his long time friend a snap-on dealer(truck) about it the guy took some pics ....came back 4 days later with a catalog cover showing the same set in the pic...the snap-on company gave a proposition to put it on display for a thousand a month or trade it for $50,000 worth of snap on tools
i didnt understand myself why snap-on didnt just offer to buy it or why my dad didnt take the deal for 12 grand a year deal...and it would have surely authenticated the set..maybe because he loved snap-on tools himself i dont know!!! im not here to sell tools!!!!! i was here for question and advice .....how can i get authenticated if they are snap-on?

Real or not, they are only worth what someone will pay for them. Nobody is going to pay 50K for a socket set even if it was made by Martians.

I know you didn't come here looking to sell these gems but this is the exact set that would complete my collection. Please consider the sale of these to me for the price of $30,000 in US dollars. I would like to conduct this through my esteemed intermediary X1Mike. If you send him the tools postage paid I will wire you the sum of $30,000 plus any postage and insurance as soon as the consulate releases my families money. My trusted friend X1Mike will make sure I get them in my home country of Nigeria.

Yours Sincerely

They have not been, are not, never will be Snap on tools. There is no snap on catalog that shows anything like these on the cover or any Snap on published material. I think your father was pulling your leg, (who would not take 50,000 worth of tools). The Snap on history book, says clearly that there are no pre 1920 tools.

anything made before 1920 totally defeats the purpose of the establishment. the first item produced claims an establishment date. snap on was not lieing for 90 ******* years because you think you have a rare socket set. stop lieing

Before my people will wire the money they want to see a picture of him holding the sockets in his left hand, a sign that says I heart Garage Journal in his right hand and balancing a fresh mackrel on his head. This will prove to them he is a man of honor and it is a valid transaction.

I don't know, they did buy one of those OCC choppers. I bet it ran them over $100K. :bounce:

snap on did not buy a chopper from OCC
they bought advertising on TV that will be re-run in syndication for years to come.
the chopper was thrown in for 'free'

Well I do apologize if I hit a nerve there buddy, but that's what it seemed like to me from your posts. If your whole story keeps getting BS called on, as it clearly is here, then you are either a scammer or just seriously misinformed. I am going to believe the latter. That's what I get for assuming. :(

Either way, just a friendly word of advise so this unfortunate incident does not happen to you again in the future. If you don't know what it is or are unsure, KEEP THE DETAILS TO YOURSELF UNTIL YOU ARE AND JUST ASK A SIMPLE QUESTION LIKE "WHAT ARE THESE AND WHAT ARE THEY WORTH?"

mkdive - you've hit it on the head. early on in this thread, as I was lurking, I was willing to take this guy as a young kid that was shooting off his mouth and underestimating the crew here on GJ. I was willing to forgive him and just set him straight to keep a member. But, his last post tells me he's an a##hole that should be banned. BWP, you called right from the start. Guys, do with him as you will. :flamethro

Hey this was a fun thread to read! Silly, but fun. I can't afford any SO tools myself but would take 50K of their stuff in a second! That would be like an entire top box full of tools, right? :bounce:

I really don't think we should bash the young man, instead, we should offer to sell some of our older tools to his family, as they seem to be financially secure tool collectors.

ALCON,

This is the Last post I will make on this thread. Because it is a TROLL thread.

I erased my posts showing what this guy was

Please note the quotes above:

In his first QUOTE, HE was offered the money...

In the second QUOTE, his father was offered the money...

What a liar!!!

Anyway, what I really believe this is, is now number 1 (from post #15 in this thread from KRUSTY)...A delusional kid.

A kid.... Just like the kid who thought he would get $10,000 for an old rusty Snap on box because his dad told him it was worth it (A thread about 3 years ago).

Anyway, this guy who is posting this is probably less than 14 years old... if not, he is a liar and Troll..

Either way, I am done with this thread....

For those who thought I was too rough on him... And can really believe his lies... Then you should look at yourselves....... I feel sorry for you... I have a message for you guys in my signature....

Krusty PMd me after the erasure... He was right... When you get old enough you know what is right and you do "feel it" when something is wrong... I should have stuck with my gut feeling before caving in to namby pambies.... It won't happen again, and I WILL CALL A SPADE A SPADE....

The Original Poster is FULL OF **** and a LIAR if he is an Adult... IF he is a child HIS DAD WAS FULL OF **** and a LIAR....

Good night and have a pleasant tomorrow.
