I believe those hefty 'pliers' are draw tongs, for pulling wire through a draw plate, to make it smaller.

I had not seen that particular design before, but a little searching brought up this image.

OT: yep sometimes i do stuff like you are doing and have to look in the mirror and say WTF, but it's kinda fun and if i had a couple hundred acres with some huge buildings on it i'd be dangerous.

The first box out of the van......looky looky! Its interesting to note that the old crumbling newspapers these clock movements were wrapped in were dated 1968.

Here's an unusual find.....a vintage "new old stock" Stanley shaper table accessory model 43A. Pictured is a grap out of a 1944 catalog which is not the same model but simular enough. I'm guessing this accessory was made in the 60's. The catalog calls it a "straight guide with safety guard"

I remember them being a thing in the early 70's craft movement when I was a kid.
(45yrs later any time I see a macramé Owl or plant hanger, I still want to cut myself )

On a side note its interesting that all the paperwork like letters and jewelers order receipts found in the latest box were all dated 1937-1940

I always thought they heated the glass, then you hit it with cold water?

It might be possible. I never used one, just saw them sitting around gathering dust after the owners lost interest after the first try.

Here's a challenge for some bright lad ....... trying to figure out what use this precision tool is for. I think it might be for grinding gravers. There are no makers marks. The cylinder part rotates and has degree graduations from 90 to 0 degrees in both directions. Then there is a table that slides back and forth using the small wheel with a T slot that cut into it so something may mount to it. ......the lines look like they work like a vernier caliper. Had to take it apart and clean up the rust. Its a well made little tool.

One picture shows a Stanley #45 combination plane--rusty but restorable. Nice find.

Dunno on the bottle cutter. I doubt the thing gets hot enough to melt the glass. I'll bet you heat the glass with the wire and then plunge the bottle into cold water so it will fracture at the heat line.

Yeah, I did that with a string, lighter fluid and a wine bottle when I was in college during the 1960s. One of my buddies needed a blues guitar slide so he could play like the Allman brothers. And it helps to have some aluminum oxide sandpaper to soften up the sharp edges.

I almost got ahead of myself a few pages back when I recognized those draw tongs... if you want to see them in action google up "jewelers drawbench" and you might well find the rest of the bench in all the other ephemera and treasure. I think I saw a jewelers or watchmakers bench peeking out from behind a gerry can back there.. did you find any drawplates?

so were you or are you a WATCHMAKER since you said you were a member?

Jake: I make ice tea in old glass gallon pickle jars and maybe 3 times i didn't wait long enough to let the jar cool after emptying it before pouring boiling water in it to make more tea and CLINK. yep the bottom of the jar just broke all the way around about 1/4 inch above the base. needless to say the half gallon of new hot tea didn't stay put in the glass jug long after that.

I didn't know there was tool that could do that. thanks for the tip

I think the Waltham Clock you speak of is more similar to this example. It uses a 36 size pocketwatch 8day movement. These were commonly used in early car dashes too.

Estate sales have become my favorite passtime especially the old farm and ranch sales out here in the west. Walking into a barn or an old shop is like walking into a candy store as a kid. Congrats on your endeavors.
