Here is a progress report on my S-K nutdriver set. It’s just missing the 5/16” driver. Hopefully one will come along soon.

I completed the wartime 4517W 3/8” drive S-K socket set with the original water transfer decal.

I got a third 40970 1/4” ratchet today. It is nicer than my other two of this model. I am thinking of buying a dual pawl upgrade kit for this one and and moving its parts to the one with chrome issues on the selector switch (the middle one in my picture).

I have one each of the upgrades in a 3/8” and a 1/2”. I wrote about them in the new tool arrival thread. The 1/4” upgrade kit makes it 120 tooth.

Picked up this ww2 era socket chest from AllFast recently. Needs the lock hasp repaired but otherwise in good shape. Here it is with some 3/4,1/2 3/8 and 1/4 stuff.

Some post Wayne 3/8” drive sets. A couple have 5/8” spark plug sockets as substitutes for the regular deep sockets.
The universal in this set arrived from Roy Olson today.

All of the Tuff-1 ratchets are 1985-2005. Facom bought S-K then. The current Facom ratchets, Proto ratchets, King Tony, Mac and others have the Tuff-1 type internals.

The box was probably made between 1946 and 1956 based on the label. It’s hard to know exactly when the up arrow on the tag was discontinued and catalog images are suspect.

I will have to go take a look and see what that extension and socket too see what it is. I probably took these photos a number of years ago and since then the box and it's tools have been up in the attic of the barn in the backyard.

I would date that box at 1945 with the non leather handle and water transfer decal. The image is from catalog 649, a catalog well known for using earlier images.

"Cleaned and Fixed" as much as I intend to "clean and fix" on this one. Awaiting arrival of missing pieces. This is what it looks like today.
Ratchet innards were caked with black goo - very weird - had to dig some of it out with a screwdriver.
Kroil for the win on getting the pipe wrench pivot point freed up - amazing stuff.

There have been several of these SK ratchets posted recently that have the SK-Diamond logo located in between the model number and the USA. I found this one in a "free" pile this summer. The drive rotated, but the pawls didn't engage. I soaked it with ATF, and after a while, it sometimes engaged in one direction. Recently, I popped the workings out and applied ATF directly, working it in by manually moving the pawls. This got it working properly, and I just used it to change a spark plug in my weed eater!

This one is pretty rusty.

I went through my spare Chrome Alloy 1/4” drive sockets today in order to fill out this partial set. I seemed to just be missing the 5/16”. I ended up removing it from a set missing the crossbar. Hopefully I’ll be able to find those two pieces sometime. The box needs painting on the next hot day anyway.

It seems like in the late ‘30s and early ‘40s, 3/8” drive wasn’t really very popular since 1/2” drive was the favorite drive size and 1/4” drive was just coming into favor, gradually replacing 9/32” drive. Putting together a 3/8” drive wartime set was quite difficult for both misterbill and me due to the relative wartime scarcity of tools in that drive size. Wartime GMTK sets only contained 1/2” drive tools along with a small 1/4” drive set. In modern times 3/8” drive has won out in popularity and 1/2” drive tools are seemingly gradually becoming less desirable.

I have six of them, I still need the 1/2", 9/16", 5/8" and 3/4", I got five of them all at once from Roy when he had them of eBay and I have not seen any of them since then.

I'll definitely see what I can find. I really need to do some organizing anyways. I thought this was interesting tho. These 2 seem to stand out next to the other but not the chrome but there's just so many different versions
