Today’s flea. As is. Hardly ever run into the 8 pts

you run into a lot of the no tool # S-K “ chrome” marked 8 pts?

I run into a lot of 4 & 8 pt sockets period, and they are near useless. - I do work on things that use square fasteners, but I don't need them in every brand in the universe...

I just picked the last socket to complete this No. 4097 socket set, with the 6-pt, 8-pt. and 12-pt S-K sockets. It has the unmarked flex-handle and crossbar. Based on @d42jeep’s posts, this looks like late 1941 - early 1942 production before the wartime metal restrictions.

I needed an 11/16" 8-point a few weeks back to remove a square nut that was in a place I couldn't get at with an open-end.
Rather than go searching, I just grabbed a big 12-point deep-well and found one that fit, gave it a good whack with a hammer, and put a breaker on it. Worked dandy.

A friend dropped these off the other day:

55421924770_178fe8b078_o.jpg

Missing 1/4"-1/2", 3/4". Duplicate 1"

I cleaned them up, but they appear to have been left sitting as pictured (maybe not in order) in shallow water for a looong time, so some are badly pitted on the reverse. 5/8" is so badly pitted it would be unpleasant to use.

Numbering on the raised panel at the open end is C-**, with the 1" being C-30 and incrementing down by two--were there 1/32" increments in between? Raised letters just below the open end are an alphabet soup of two-letter combos.

Reverse sides bear FORGED ALLOY IN USA and pitting :( It would be fun to complete this set, but I don't really much use SAE sizes any more, except around the shop and we have tools for that.

So last time I posted I assumed anyone reading would know that the SK Chrome sockets that have the word “chrome” on the sockets with no tool #’s are the first generation of that very popular chrome& matte and knurled base style they came out with in the 30’s that by the early 40’s had removed the word “chrome” and added the 401XX tool #’s. Anyway, ran into a bunch more at the same flea, different seller and thou I’m not an S-K guy…they are really nice sockets. Years ago I went thru an almost entirely S-K collection being sold at some Illinois fairground, an unbelievable amount of vintage S-K looking for any “chrome” marked sockets with a tool # besides the known drag link ones to confirm with Bill at AA what we already assumed…..but if anyone has some, post ‘em or provide a link. Thanks.

Thanks to a couple of members here, my S-K Forged ALLOY in USA SAE combo wrench set is coming together:

55479533530_85ae5017e6_b.jpg

Only missing 3/4, 11/32, 5/16 and 1/4 now. I remembered that I had that old Craftsman organizer in storage and it makes it much easier to keep track of what I have and don't have. Just wish it accommodated the 15/16 and 1". For use, I'll buy/make a roll anyway.

I think I'll get out the buffer with 3M blending disks and see if I can smooth out some of the nastier, corroded parts of a couple of them. Maybe when it cools off some. 102 outside and 90 in the shop right now so I'm pretty much trying not to move much.

I'm looking to make a set of users, not a collection, so I don't really care as long as they're comfortable in hand.

I've got a nice 3/4" wrench you can have, if it's worth the price of shipping.
(I'll be going to the post office to return some shoes).

The chrome is a little worn, but intact.

I recently found a partial set of SK WAYNE 12 point combination wrenches.

IMG_2513.jpeg
I had the two smallest ones already.
Should I dig out the engraver and add WHA to the C-10 and C-12? :)

I have some WAYNE metric combination wrenches too and a few DOEs.

(I'm keeping an eye out for an 11mm and 14mm to fill those gaps).

Let's PM about that. Not sure just where Kingston is, but shipping is something I can do.

This 1/4” drive set arrived yesterday and it turned out to be kind of a mixed set. A couple of the sockets were modern S-K but those were offset by the prewar flex handle and crossbar which are identical with their Brazil cousins. Most of the knurled sockets and the extension could have been original to the set. IMG_9428.jpegIMG_9429.jpeg
