Speaking of SK making tools under contract, I came across this on eBay the other night for $15 + shipping so naturally had to have it.

As in thumbing through Ebay, while spanning the expanse of Eastern WA enroute to another Craftsman roller cab? Multi-tasking at it's highest art form?

:lol_hitti

I'd like to pretend I'm that talented, and the endless fields of grains make for a boring drive, but I had a terrible signal out there!

I agree. I’ve only ever found one. I have an S-K placeholder in my smaller partial set.

All of the odd brand ratchets are scarce. I have been on the lookout for them and they are not common.

Here is kraeuter with the penneys and gambles. I am sure there are others as well.

Yes they are. It seems like any USA made ratchets are getting harder to find now a days.

Nice looking group.

I have to admit that when I reach in the 3/8” ratchet drawer I grab the S-K ratchet rather than the Kraeuter. Just a habit, I guess.

Back in June, my neighbor and I checked out a So Lake Tahoe thrift store. While I was going through the sockets, he spotted a crossbar that I added to my finds. I thought that it might fit an early S-K 17” breaker bar but mine were back in the Bay Area. I found a bar and some large sockets on eBay and they arrived today. I was happy to see that the crossbar fit the breaker perfectly. These breakers have a retaining ball in the crossbar hole to center the slotted bar. The crossbar will complete my 4015 set.

I’ve been trying to complete a couple of postwar S-K sets. Here is a 3/8” drive set followed by a 1/4” set. They both have a couple of extras.

Nice stuff. Picked up this 1/2 drive set recently. Sat for last 60 some years in a garage unused.

Nice. Here it is in the catalog. Odd that a crossbar wasn’t included.

The extension shouldn’t be too hard to find. That set looks very lightly used. I received this Chrome Alloy 1/4” drive ratchet as part of a trade. It’ll end up in the Brazil box that Username sent me.

Here's the box I posted in the 2020 Garage Sale Thread all cleaned up and with just the S-K tools that came with it (plus a few I had on hand). Overall it came with ~50% of the original tools. The first post in this thread shows a similar set that is dated to 1953. I'm thinking this box is from before then as it has the different badge placement on the front cover and the wrenches have the "Made in USA" (similar to WWII issue) stamping on them. More like the 4010R set in this 1949-1950 S-K catalog.

THAT is a fantastic looking box and set of tools. I’m a tad envious.

Thanks, but it's a slippery slope. :) I just read in the catalog that you can also add the tools from the 4727 set in the same chest! :willy_nil

Between your super master Snappy set and this master SK wrench set, two lessons in collecting: dogged piece by piece persistence, and dumb luck. The latter is always nice, but it makes one appreciate the former even more. :)

Nices box, Bill. I cleaned up yesterday’s tool sale S-K finds. Two early 1/2” drive ratchets, one marked PAT. PEND but both with the recess for the clip that indicates an early one. The socket with the hole for the bar is one of the thin wall that is not guaranteed. The other 13/16” spark plug socket is 1/2” drive and surprisingly the rubber insert is intact. Maybe the rust held it in place. The other tools were a tight 1/2” drive u-joint and a teeny combo.

Thanks, Don. Has it ever been established when S-K switched from the recess for the retention clip to the larger opening?

That is a question that I would like to know the answer to as well. If we assume that OTG’s 1/2” drive set shown recently has the original pieces, and it looks to me like it does, they were still using the deep recess in 1956. I suspect, based on the quantity of found examples, that the new style came in shortly after that and was used until around 1964 when the ratchets started being SK Wayne marked. In checking as many catalog listings as I could find, that side of the ratchet was never shown.

For some reason I'm becoming obsessed with dating this box. I've been reading through some of the earlier posts in this thread and Catfishdan has a box with the same physical details in post 406 except it has a water transfer decal instead of the riveted badge. I think we all feel comfortable with the badge appearing in the 1946/1947 timeframe so I'm thinking the box could be possibly that early.

I think mine is a bit earlier than yours since the handles are plain finish rather than black and a slightly more simple hasp. If these were made shortly after WW2, yours might be ~’48/‘49 and mine ~ ‘46/‘47. I’m not sure that we will ever know for sure.

misterbill’s wonderful toolbox and toolset finds and the 1/2” drive ratchet discussion prompted me to take some pictures of my S-K ratchets. The first two are the early 1/2” drive followed by 3/8” drive and 1/4” drive. The beaver tails are a variety of brands of S-K ratchets.
