Some brazil stuff. Recently picked up the 3/8 set and tried my hand at making a decal, as the old one was obliterated. Used pixlr to touch up decal image and stuck it on with some clearcoat.

Looks good. I could use one of those. I bought some red wrinkle paint and am going to redo an unmarked S-K box when the weather warms up enough to get some decent wrinkle action.

Not a show piece but I will send you one if you like. Definitely better than no decal.

I am pretty stocked up other than 3/8 drive. Chrome alloy and sk chrome are tough to find in 3/8.

I’ll go through the 3/8” drive and see if I’ve accumulated any duplicates.
Edit.... I found two 3/8” duplicates, one 8 point and one 12 point. Let me know if you need either or both of them.

I picked this set up a couple years ago at some Cash Advance place. It looks like someone dumped it for cash and then the store staff didn't know it's worth. They must have thought it was old or some off brand. Crazy that they didn't read the "Made in USA" that was stamped all over the tools. So $10 bucks later I was on the road and grinning from ear to ear at my steal of a deal.

I received a great S-K care package from Catfish Dan today. The ratchet is from the 30s and the early sockets will fill out some sets. Thanks, Dan!

I’ve done some organizing of my S-K tools. Here is my new early ratchet alongside my socket set of around the same vintage. While I had that set out, I borrowed some of its sockets to show several S-K sockets from old to new, left to right. I didn’t have much S-K Wayne to pick from but I did find one metric 3/8” drive socket.

I finally completed the metric 1/4” drive set that I initially purchased in the early ‘80s or late ‘70s. It had been filled in with other brands but I was able to find S-K sockets on eBay.

I received this almost complete 12 point universal set. The sockets cleaned up well but there wasn’t much finish remaining on the box. Since it was a warm day I put some wrinkle finish on the lid, inside and out. I think it will look okay with the color coat applied.

Don--

You've really perfected that wrinkle coat!

Thanks. It was only 70 degrees out which is warm for February. I think it would have worked even better had it been 80. I’ve tried using a heat lamp before but it was too uneven. I have a few more boxes to do when it really warms up.

These sets are complete to my satisfaction as of today. I went ahead and resprayed the interior of the lid of the larger box since the original wrinkle paint was very fragile. The new paint should keep it from deteriorating further and now the box is all one color.

Printed up another brazil decal. Like I said not a show piece but if you want it I'll send it. Are you in still in Tahoe?

That’s a nice early set made prior to 1953, at which point they changed the 12 point sockets to 6 point.

a few years ago i picked up a two drawer box like that with a 3/4 drive, 1/2 drive and some other stuff along with a couple ratchets marked brazil. the sockets and ratchets said chrome alloy but one look and i could tell they were sk sockets. I paid 6o-70 bucks for the lot, I ended up going back to their garage sale and got some more matching ratchets and sockets.

Today was a Chrome Alloy day. I received four each of 1/2” and 1/4” drive, mostly 8 point sockets. I’m still missing the 1” socket in 1/2” drive. Here they are added to the Brazil box.

The decal arrived and the size is perfect. It’ll be just right for the box I plan to paint with red wrinkle finish. I’ll probably do the final trimming with an exacto knife.

I spotted a Craigslist ad for a local estate sale. I’m still about a week away from being willing to go to one but my friend and GJ contributor Shiftless was going after a vise. He spotted an old S-K set and grabbed it for me. It looks to be the same set that 3bay recently posted that was Brazil marked. I had found a lot of the tools a few years back an another local estate sale so I was able to fill in most of the missing pieces. I’m missing the speeder, plug and some 8 point sockets. The 1936 newspaper ad was posted upthread by Leviton.

Thanks, Outlaw. It took a little cleaning and hammer and dolly work. I had been looking for a box of that era since I found this socket lot in 2018. The S-K tools from the early ‘30s don’t show up that often. They are hard to ID since they are unmarked.

What did you use to clean up the finish on the tool box?

I used a little brake cleaner on a paper towel to remove the silver paint on the inside of the lid, being careful to stay away from the decal. On the rest of the box, I used Formula 409 and a nylon brush to scrub the greasy areas and a putty knife for the thicker areas that the brush didn’t remove. I didn’t totally clean the bottom because what’s left will prevent future rust. The box had obviously seen plenty of use over the years and I didn’t want to do any real restoration on it, just cleaning.
