Vintage Work Bench

I just joined this forum this week. I have been a car guy for 50 years and enjoy car related things, particlarly things older. While at an estate sale I happened upon what matches the description of a Lincoln Engineering Company metal work bench from the '30's or early '40's, about 8'6" by just over 5' tall. I have not had the time to examine it yet because of the sale but was wondering if anybody could tell me if it comes apart easily and very roughly how much is weighs. I saw there was one on Ebay in 2007 in which the seller said they had a forklift available for loading. That is enough to give a person cause to think. I am attaching a photo of it to see if it is what I think it is.

thanks for the tip Journaler, appreciate it very much. I want one, and I realize I'm probably not going to luck into one for a few hundred bucks. I'm prepared to pay a fairly good price, but $4500 is a little steep in my opinion. Thanks for pointing it out- appreciate any leads from fellow GJ'ers!

I have one just like that. Don't have back and top across bench. Name plate: Shure manufacturing. They are out off St. Louis. When I called them they didn't give me much info. Starting to restore them. If any has any information please let me know. Also need parts. Thx Hichie

Sounds interesting hichie. Can you post a pic please? Have seen a few Shure cabinets out there.

I started stripping mine and found the tag that said Shure on it. The interesting thing to me is that I used an abrasive wheel to remove the paint on some of the surfaces. A person told me a citrus based stripper would work better, debatable so far, but I ended up taking several layers of paint off one of the cabinet doors and found a red painterd badge on the door centered left to right and about the middle of the door above the handle. It was almost like the Superman badge but was an S instead. The stripper seemed almost ineffectual in removing it which, I think in hindsight, was a blessing. I have yet to see one of these and wonder if the original paint and this painted badge were baked on when built. I have not touched the other cabinet door yet so I will check it for another badge. Other than the badge and the nameplate I have found no other marking.

Please let me know if you find any parts source. Mine is complete I think but the plastic under the door handles is partially missing in some areas.

Hi all, I'm restoring the two outer cabinets to a Graco that my wife's Grandpa has since he worked at the Ford plant here in St Paul. I have no idea what ever happened to the bench and overhead in the middle, but I'm looking for the aluminum trim and the Graco emblems for the doors.

If anyone see's anything or knows where I might find the accessories please let me know!

He said that he thought it was a lube station dating back to the 30's or 40's.

I have not been able to find any information on what it might actually be.

I just found this thread on the forum. I have watched garage journal for a few years and love it. I have never posted but could use some help now. I just purchased a Graco work station. I will be restoring it but there are few missing pieces. Any leads on where I could get parts? Currently I need a cabinet door handle, the red door handle inset, inner shelves for the side cabinets, the bucket that swings out from underneath. The handle portion is the most important part to me as it is the most visible. Any help is appreciated

That will be nice when done. The red insert looks like some type of plastic? You could use your good one for a pattern and make a mold and cast one from resin.
Alternatiely it looks like you could have some spun from sheetmetal, or turn one on a lathe, maybe some interesting wood type, or metal or plastic.

I really like the idea of keeping the inside of that cabinet a light color. I'll likely be repainting a similar cabinet (it's black now and I'll probably keep it that color) and could see the advantage of keeping it light inside as it may make seeing and finding things in there a lot easier.

I thought I'd chime in with my version of the vintage work bench. I have always loved the look of these old benches, but they are hard to come by and usually expensive when you can find one. I also have windows above the area I want my work area to be, and one of these tall benches would block the window. The way my workbench will be laid out is "L" shaped and measure 6.5' along the short leg of the "L" and 12' along the long leg. I have plumbing for a sink along the short leg of the "L".

So in looking for cabinets to serve as the base for my workbench, I came across a really cool old kitchen sink cabinet. It was a 1950's Homart brand (sold by Sears back in the day) steel cabinet with porcelain cast iron double drain board sink. The look was fantastic with the rounded corners and circular stainless steel pulls, but it was 5' long and would not work in the location I needed the sink as it was just 6" too long. It looked like the one in the picture.

In the next few days it just happened that two other Homart cabinets of the same design showed up on Craigslist from two other sellers. One was a stand alone cabinet that measured 21" wide and the other was another sink cabinet with a stainless steel double drain board sink, but this one measured only 4.5' wide and would JUST fit where I needed the sink to go. It was fate, so I bought all three cabinets. I kept looking and found two more 30" wide cabinets to complete my set.

I then took the 5' kitchen cabinet that was two wide to use in the sink area and sold the double drain board cast iron sink for pretty much what I paid for the entire cabinet. I removed the doors under the where the sink would go and cut out the floor there to turn it into a seated desk position in the work bench (where the shopvac is tucked away in the picture). I then repainted them all red to match my tool boxes. I just finished the painting and reassembly this weekend. Still have to secure the cabinets in place and fit the bench top.

The bench top is made of 1.75" thick solid doors ripped to 24.5" wide. I plan to eventually skin it in stainless steel to match the sink. I'm pretty pleased how this is all coming together for my vintage look work bench.

Here is a work bench my boss gave me 30 years ago it originally was on a navy destroyer USS Adams possibly in the machine shop area. I took it apart and cleaned it up and left it raw steel and painted the doors and drawers. I will post a few more pictures later when I have it done.

It happened again!

While cruising Facebook a few weeks ago I saw one of those stupid adds and recognized the shop in the picture as Blackies Auto in Tell City Indiana. I immediately clicked on the link because I had looked in the windows there a couple of years ago and saw it was full of cool old stuff (it's around 100 miles from my house). In the pictures was a Bear Alinement cabinet. So today I went to the sale to buy the cabinet but the auctioneer sold it as a lot giving the buyer the right to take or leave anything the wanted in the pit. I ended up with a truck load and met a fellow forum member that had come to buy the cabinet. As a bonus it came with a Bear Alinement tester.



I left very little behind!

The rack was welded in and wasn't worth the work to get it out I left it for the new owner of the building to use as an oil change rack.

Well I got it all washed up and put in my garage until I get the lean too finished.


It also came with a alignment tester. From what I have read these were installed in the service bay to use as part of the tune up process to help sell alignment services.
