actually I dont think it was for practicing with, It was to ensure the welding was being done correctly. You cant exactly cut apart a super structure to inspect the welds.
No but there are lots of ways to inspect a weld without cutting it apart. We have 100% weld testing on all critical welds. If you want to make some money on an easy (but stressful) job none destructive testing engineer is the way to go.
Welders are certified and rigorously tested for a reason and the way I took it was this equipment was supposed to make anyone a pro.
Will a virtual weld join 2 pieces of 3/8 plate? The whole idea seems pretty silly to me, no matter how 'real' they can make it look! Kind of like trying to get in shape by 'virtual jogging'!
